Contacting MoD UK Polish Section
Hi,
I noticed that many have had a few problems with MoD UK. I thought that a few hints or tips may help when dealing with them. The key issue that you will need to show MoD is that you are the legal next of kin (NOK). If you are not then you need to have written authority from the NOK. I know that it can be an issue if you don't always have the details. However, my advise is to take the standing that unless you know a closer relative that is alive then you probably are the NOK. You will have to sign an MoD Form 1000 Kinship form stating your relationship and send in copies of proff of that relationship i.e. marriage, birth, death certificates. My letter enquiries were taking 10 days to turn round within UK. Here are some details from thier web site: (I have amended them slightly since the original is for all applicants not only those wishing to access the Polish section) Polish Records Royal Navy and Army: Army Personnel Centre Polish Correspondence Section Government Buildings Bourne Avenue Hayes Middlesex UB3 1RS Email: defencerecords.hayes@... Royal Air Force: PMA(Sec)1b Building 248A RAF Innsworth Gloucester GL3 1EZ (No web site or email address given) Requests For Service Records FAQs Q. I am a former member of the Armed Forces. Can I obtain information from my service record? A. Yes, please write to the relevant record office listed on the service records page. You will need to provide some form of ID. This can be a copy of a recent bill, driving license or passport. (See above address) Q. I am the widow/widower or legal next of kin of an ex-serviceman. Can I obtain information held on my spouses/parents/relatives service record? A. Yes, however you will need to provide proof of death and kinship. Please write to the relevant record office listed on the service records page. (See above address) Q. I am not the widow/widower or legal next of kin of an ex-service person. Can I obtain information about the ex-service person held on service records? A. Only if you can obtain a letter of consent from either the person the record belongs to or, if that person is deceased from the widow/widower or legal next of kin. Once you have obtained the letter of consent, please write to the relevant record office listed on the service records page. (See above address) Q. What other information is required by the record offices to access a service record? A. This varies slightly depending on whether the person was in the Royal Navy, Army or Royal Air Force. Please refer to the information held on the service records page. Q. Can I request a complete copy of my service record? A. Yes, please write to the relevant record office listed on the service records page. Q. Will I have to pay? A. Only if your request is for genealogical/family tree reasons. Q. Why are requests for information held on service records made? A. The reasons for requests are varied. When you write to the records offices, inform them of the reason why you are making the request. This will assist them in supplying the correct information. Some of the more common reasons for requests are: ? Proof of service for joining military associations or ex-services organisations. ? Proof of service to enable welfare assistance from ex-service organisations. ? Proof of occupancy of Married Quarters for local councils. ? Researching family trees or history. ? Information held on service medical records. Q. I need information about a veteran who was in the services in the early 1920's or before. Where do I find it? A. Service records that reach a certain age, are archived at the Public Records Office (PRO). Generally service records dating from the early 1920's, or before, are held at the PRO however the date varies according to which service the person was in. Please read the information held on the Service Records page. Hope this is of some use. PS. Doea anyone have a similar rundown for the Sikorski Institute in London UK? |

This is very helpful - thank you. One point, MOD does not reply to e-mails - probably their e-mail address is obsolete. As for SI, they are not currently in the information access business like MOD is. ?Perhaps in the future? Stefan WIsniowski

HA4 6NG New Tel No 0208 8338603 Any enquiries should now be addressed to there. They are not on E- mail yet as they only moved last week, but they are hopeful that it will soon be available. Hi Stefan,
I must apologise for giving the wrong address to the group! Good job Bob was paying attention! I understand that all Govt/MoD departments in UK have a charter to answer the publics requests promptly and communicate effectively. Moving base and not updating websites etc does not sound to me as if they are on top of this charter. I might just see if I can make that point with them and see if they will update the web site, place the MoD form 1000 on line for down loading and accept email requests if only to give yes/no answers. Or at least find out if it is in the pipeline. It would save them time and money. The objection might be that they want to register and allocate a reference number first. However, that just requires a flip in the process to change and makes them more accessable to the general public. It seems that they are moving from Nissan huts near Millhill to an RAF base down the road at North Holt. I suspect a few Poles have flow Spitfires and Hurricanes out of that airfield in its time. Hopefully communications can be improved on such a large base. Need to find a friendly RAF Officer to see if he can help out! In your view do you think that the Sikorski Institute could be coached round to being more 'user friendly'? Or is it a lost cause? I am interested in a challenge and if there was even a small chance of changing their attitude would be willing to take it on. Of course it would probably have to be in specific areas rather than across the board. From your experience what is the most requested information from the Institute. Perhaps we could poll it on the board to find out? Maybe even volunteer to set a website up for them? Some things never change.... stores are for storing sir or they would be called sign here and hand outs! And now it seems archives are for archiving! Be Interested to know your views on this. Hi,
?
When I started looking for my family members, I wrote to MoD in Middlesex and within a short time I had a reply from them and they confirmed that my uncle was in the British Army, but would not disclose further information without permission from the Next of Kin. I found them helpful and understood their reasons.
