of your copies for my book "Exiled to Siberia." I hope you enjoyed it. I believe it is a valid addition to your video as it outlines the pertinent history underlying the deportations besides the biography of my friend. You may be interested to know that another of my friends, Mark Wolski, has developed a very moving and very exact slide presentation on the subject of the deportations. He and I gave a talk together last May. He is at present in the UK and I hope you could perhaps link up. Now to my request: In you message of 10/11 you spoke of a number of British universities and historical societies and below you speak of some person in France as well as about your contact with Norman Davies. Not only would I like to, but also I believe it is in the spirit of our efforts, to send some complimentary copies of my book to Norman Davies, the person in France, as well as to a number of university contacts in the UK. Could you, please, provide my with names and mailing addresses. Here in the US a number of people mention the history chanel. Quite some time ago I had sent a copy of my book to them, but if there would be a personal contact it could be worthwhile, in particular in combination of your video. Any ideas? Mark Wolski's presentation would be another source. What do you think? Best regards, Klaus Hergt. ----- Original Message -----
From: <jagna8@...> To: <Kresy-Siberia@...> Sent: Wednesday, November 12, 2003 5:02 AM Subject: [Kresy-Siberia] Norman Davies Hi Stefan, George, Robert, and anyone involved in the memorial/museumproject. I took courage in my hands and called Norman Davies - and he isjoin forces. The only thing we must be careful of is not to make him work for it - rather use his name, and then, when the time comes, use him for speeches and publicity. He is very much an impractical academic and would hate any idea of being involved in money raising, etc. Please, send him another e-mail, maybe preceeding it with smg like: we areso excited, having heard from Jagna, etc,etc... And here is another thing, which I find difficult to keep to myself. Myfriend asked me for a French version of the Odyssey, for a Paris publisher for whom she is working. He is very famous, very well connected, very rich - and at the age of 60 + is looking for a worthy cause to support. And, believe it or not, his ideefix is... the first in the Western world museum to the victims of Soviet oppression!!! When he heard from Ania of our story, he asked for the film (wanted it NOW) and a meeting over X-mas holidays, so that we can start plotting - he obviously needs more knowledge on the subject, his approach is mainly emotional - so the Polish story can be a sort of 'introduction' (his other link with Poland is his adopted children). Best of all, Norman Davies agreed to be the patron of the museum as well! At a discussion with politicians at the Im.War Museum, at the Odyssey premiere, he told a story of his failed attempt to attract attention of his fellow academics to the Soviet attrocities. All his efforts were in vain - almost no one came to a meeting with a few Russian dissidents, former inmates of the Gulag. So, he too has a 'bee in his bonet' on this subject - but being almost the only British historian who had enough integrity to point out the injustice of closing the eyes to the Soviet crimes, he is quite disliked amongst the British academia - so I am a bit sceptical about George's optimism as to the 'power' of his name. But let's try. On second thoughts, as he is so old fashioned, maybe it is better to writehim a letter? I think it is selectively applied, and is an unneessary curtailment of freedom of expression. I don't believe people should be put in jail for stupid statements unless it can be reasonably shown that those utterings are likely to incite criminal behaviour. Re: Digest Number 783
F. Gerry Cierpilowski
Dear Kresy-Siberia Members,
My husband posted 50 photographs in the Cierpilowski album under Kresy-Siberia Members' Albums. The pictures were taken by a number of different individuals in Karachi during the Christmases of 1943 and 1944, and they actually come from the album of a nurse now in her mid 90's by the name of Florence Polce. She was stationed at a rehabilitation hospital near Karachi. During the Christmas season the nurses made Christmas stockings for the Polish refugee children in the camp in Karachi and filled them with whatever goodies they could scrounge. I will be revising the description which is now posted with the album to include a little more information. We are happy to be a part of this noble endeavor of research, remembrance, and recognition of those who suffered and lost so much. Sincerely, F. Gerry Cierpilowski |

The Hoover Institute does have a weblink, but it only lists general contents of boxes not specific names (see info at http://www.aforgottenodyssey.com/mainref.html#r3) What I do have is access to a prototype database, currently "under construction", of Release Certificates and "Ankiety" (questionnaires) archived in the Hoover Institute. ?I hope that we will be able to make it available to the group in due course as a research aid. Ernst Zundel is a German national who has lived in Canada for decades, has been denied Canadian citizenship, and is deemed to be a security risk. He is what is known as a 'Holocaust Denier'. He believes that the extermination facilities at Oswiecim never existed, that it's all a Jewish-Communist plot to defame the German nation.
