"When we lost our freedom"
Jadwiga Wasilewska-Antonczyk

Jadwiga Wasilewska Antonczyk was born in Prague,
Czechoslovakia. Less than a year after her birth her sister and brother and
little Jadwiga moved to Lvov where she grew up, attended school and worked
until the outbreak of World War Two. She does not recall her mother as she
had died two months after giving birth to Jadwiga's brother. All three
siblings were raised by family of their father who worked in the province of
Stanislaww. As a high school student Jadwiga actively participated in
youth's life and school organizations. After passing her "matura"
examination (high school finals), until the outbreak of World War Two, she
worked with the textile factory in Bielsk. Now, as a senior citizen and a US
resident, she decided to give evidence to the fate of herself and other
Poles under the Stalin rule. Not only on the so-called "voluntary exile" but
also in casemates, jails, labor camps, gold mines, in Kolyma camps where
about 10,000 Polish political prisoners were sent between 1940 and 1941.
Only about 580 of them survived until amnesty and, released, hardly managed
to reach the Polish Army. At the temperature reaching -70 centigrade they
all had frostbites all over their bodies.

I am interested in the Kresny-Siberia group because my deceased mother (Mary Mikolajczyk) and her family (parents and two older brothers) were deported in February 1940 from Eastern Poland (Village of Granotow) to a work camp in Archangelsk, Russia. ?She was from a Catholic family that was not particularly prominent or political. ?Her father (Felix Mikolajczyk) was left in the middle of the forest when the railroad cattle cars came to a stop on their journey northward. ?My mother searched for him through the Red Cross and eventually presumed he froze to death near that railroad stop. ?She and her mother were released from the labor camp when her brothers agreed to fight with the Allies under Anders. ?Her brother Anthony lost a wife and child in Archangelsk and later fought at Monte Cassino. ?My mother and grandmother crossed the Atlantic by agreeing to serve as kitchen help on an American hospital ship. ?My mother, grandmother (Anna Mikolajczyk) and her brother Joseph were at the Santa Rosa Camp before entering the United States via Laredo, Texas.

I am especially interested in books about the Poles who shared my mother's experience that are aimed at the 9-12 year old audience. ?One of my children has shown an interest in learning about the topic.

arrested by the NKWD in Bielska Biala and sent deep into the USSR. Would
anybody have any ideas on how to research this history?

Re: Marandellas (Morondera) cemetary

Hi there,
?
I am surprised to hear that the school has turned into a housing project, my son attended the boarding school from Grade 3, he was very happy there and only the other evening we were talking about this, because in the headmaster's office, there was a tapestry hanging that was done by the Polish ladies at the farm at that time, maybe you can ask Polish Missionary to make enquiries to see what has happened to this tapestry. It would be an absolute shame if it has been destroyed. I will see if I can locate the previous headmaster who as far as I know is in New Zealand and see if he can shed some light on this item. It should by all rights be returned to the Polish Community. My mother was in the Refugee Camp in Rusape.
Please let me know how you get on with this enquiry.
?
Regards,
?

Halina Szulakowska wrote:
Hi,
?
Following on from Bert Bakker's email about the cemetary at Tengeru, I just wanted to mention another Polish site at Marandellas.
?
My mother's family were based here, although Mama attended the girl's boarding school at Digglefold. It was in Marandellas that my Dziadek, Piotr Brodalka, died in 1945. He is buried in the cemetary that was close to the camp.
?
Until recently (about 2 years ago) we weren't quite?sure about what had happened to this graveyard. We were prompted to investigate when my cousin and her husband travelled to Zimbabwe to find the?old camp, and reported back to us that the place had been replaced by a new housing devlopemnt. This, as you can imagine, upset my mother greatly. So I rang the embassy of Zimbabwe in London several times to ask for information, but drew a blank - they really weren't interested in helping.
?
It was then that somebody suggested we write to the Misja Katolicka in London to see if they could help us. Through them, we were given the name and address of a Polish missionary based not far from Morondera. We sent him a letter. A few weeks later, back came a reply that he had travelled to Morondera and managed to locate the Polish cemetary. He said it was very overgrown and that some of the stone crosses had been broken. But, he also promised us that he would clean the graveyard - this he did with help from people in his parish.
?
We now have photos of my grandfather's grave.
?
My mother still writes to the priest and we send him donations to help with the unkeep of the cemetary.
?
I also mention this now, because All Soul's Day is?approaching and many Poles will be visiting their family's graves. We will be in Rugby where my Babcia and Tata are buried. But, it will also be good to know that the Polish graves in Morondera will also be blessed again this year.
?
Pozdrowienia,
?
Halina

Hi Linder!
I don't live in UK but in Poland. I had some problems?to contact with MOD but one of our K-S members sent their new address and I think it woun't be a problem this time. I know I have to send my request in special form and I have to prove my kinship. All is understandable. I have only one problem. Nobody in my family knows when my grandfather was really born- he was changing his birthday date to avoid compulsory service in Wehrmacht, and he changed it during the WWII few times, too. I wander if he was sure for himself when was his real birthday? I hope MOD won't reject my request when I'll write? different date from that one in their record.
?
Cheers!

Query on Bakker/Bekker

Tony Golinski

I am looking for any Bakker/Bekker surnames in relation to my family,
Golinski.
My Grandmother - Katarzyna Golinski - remarried in Africa, possibly
Rhodesia, & all we know is that her second husband's surname was
Bakker or Bekker, & his christian name may have been Billy. They had
a daughter (also called Katarzyna), but I have no further information
at this time.
Are there any members able to help?

Golinski Family

Tony Golinski

Great News.

Its strange how our lives change with a simple email or even a short
phone call that one reads or makes. Today I was reading the messages
sent from the group, & came across a message from someone looking for
Golinski's.
The Golinski's being looked for were my father & uncle - the person
looking turned out to be my cousin, who I had no idea existed!

I would like to say a big "HELLO" to my cousin Anna Coates. It was
fantastic to talk to you, the family are all over the moon to hear
from you, & we look forward to speaking to you again soon.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Stefan
Wisniowski, Linda, and Tadeusz for all their help & advice.

It would great if we put together on our site a central area that would give
detailed information as to who to write to, what to ask for, what you will
need to submit, specific form needed, addresses, phone numbers and other
data regarding question we have about our relatives, their lives, our past
history etc.

There seems to be a great need for a central area on our site for this.

I hope someone will take on this duty, review all of the past postings and
assemble this in a logical form.
