Yes, PAL it is. (although many Aussie machines read NTSC as well, in keeping with our tradition of taking the best from Europe and from America). Stefan

As well as having a VHS video recorder, the important part that has been missed out, is we operate on a signal called PAL, does Australia use PAL as well?

BBC Radio presents the story of "A Forgotten Odyssey", aired on last Monday
17 September.
It will be on their website probably for only for another day or so.
If you are interested, please go to
Here is the description of the program: Monday 17 September 2001. Just sixteen days after Hitler invaded Poland from the west, the Russians
rolled in from the east.
Whole communities had to abandon their homes and were packed into
cattle trains heading into the depths of Russia. Some died along the way,
many died
in the labour camps where they were forced to work.
Jenni Murray investigates this forgotten odyssey of nearly two million Poles, with Sister Aniela Nowak, who was evacuated to Russia, at the
age of
nine, and Anita Prazmowska, a Senior Lecturer in international
history, at
the London School of Economics.
The film, 'Forgotten Odyssey' is being shown tonight on the BBC's History
Channel.

You could email the BBC and ask for a copy of the interview, I was able to obtain a video of a visit to Katyn, by relatives of the victims that was broadcast a couple of years ago. It recorded the train ride from Warsaw to Katyn, the priests service, the Polish army detachment which fired a Salute, interviews with the relatives and the journey back, which was stopped at Lwow by the Russian army as a friendly gesture. A very good, but too short (about 20 minutes) program. John

Irene has looked for my family's specific names, and has sent me info on one of them (Stanislawa Wisniowska).
Don, when you go to the Hoover, I would appreciate your help in finding anything at all in the Hoover referring to the settlement of WARSZAWKA. This was a civilian settlement 6km north of BRODY, set up in the early 1920's by Polish settlers who purchased their land. I understand that the majority of them were deported on 10 Feb 1940. I believe that there are several sources of information in the archives there, including files organised by Powiat (county) and Wojewódstwo (voivodship) of origin. Perhaps Irene can give us all some advice on this? -- Stefan Wisniowski Australia

I have been away for the past couple of weeks visiting my mother and aunt in Buffalo New York. Their family grew up in the eastern borderlands and I was able to obtain more stories during my visit. My grandfather, Jan Norek ( a military settler), owned a farm approximately 3km. from Osada Wolakrybutowiecka and 5 km from Wisnowiec. He joined General Ander's army to escape the Soviet Union and was able to get his family out safely.
Does anyone on the list have relatives who settled in this general vicinity?
I plan to take a field trip to Stanford to take a look at the papers of General Anders and would be glad to look up information for others while there. I also greatly appreciate Irene Czernichowska's assistance in working at the Hoover Institute Archives.

Re Osada Wolakrybutowiecka
Dear Don,
I look forward to exchanging stories and info.
My mother's family (Sulkowski) settled in Krzemieniec in 1934 which is just up the road from Wisnowiec (20kms) and even less from Wola Korybutowiecka. They were deported to Kazakhstan and the Gulag. My father (Gladun) was born in Krzemieniec as was his father. He survived Katyn and joined the Anders Army.

The investigative unit of the National Remembrance Institute (IPN) will ask the Byelorussian prosecution authorities to open an investigation into the [war] crime committed at Naliboki in the Nowogrodek district.
The [Polish] investigation of this crime has been conducted since April 1996 by the District Commission for Prosecuting Crimes against the Polish Nation in Lodz. The Lodz IPN reopened it on March 20, 2001. The crime has been brought again to light recently by the Polish Canadian Congress.

128 men and 3 women were killed. These people were led out of their homes at night, and shot. Their property was stolen, and their homes burnt.
Apart from the massacre in Naliboki, the IPN wants to investigate also the shooting of 10 people in the village of Derevno (December 1943), and the execution of 19 soldiers of the Home Army (AK) in Kamien (May 1943).

Re: Naliboki search for partisans
Is there any way you can add more to the medal
if the ribbon was blue and the medal gold then if it was a cross it could
have been a Virtuti Militari V class
without knowing more I can't offer any fuller explanation, only
speculation

The [Polish] investigation of this crime has been conducted since April 1996 by the District Commission for Prosecuting Crimes against the Polish Nation in Lodz. The Lodz IPN reopened it on March 20, 2001. The crime has been brought again to light recently by the Polish Canadian Congress.
According to the current results of the investigation, in Naliboki, during the night of 8/9 May 1943, Soviet partisans massacred the Polish population.
Note: The circumstances of the Naliboki massacre, in which participated the Jewish units "Jerusalem" (commander Bielski) and "Pobeda" (commander Zorin) are described at (pages 24-25 and footnotes)

I would like to offer some advice from my experience with a Yahoo group;
To avoid the adverts that arrive with group emails specify in "edit my membership" that you don't want emails from group members sent automatically to your mailbox. Instead specify that you want to go to the Kresy-Siberia Group site itself to read the latest messages as well as to post your own messages from there. I also find this easier as you can trace the threads as well as checking archives and keywords. I find my email box gets filled pretty quick. (I specified that I would rather not receive emails in my mail box--but for some reason I still am.)
Also many people who are not core members or who seldom post messages are turned off by a daily flood of emails. Some prefer just to periodically browse the group site and check the postings or access the archives for specific topics at their leisure.
Members who post should also be aware that all the postings will in time become part of the public domain and will appear in search engines etc. What you write will be out there for everyone to read. Which is a good thing as it will facilitate in spreading our news and info out there. Google for instance picks up every name and descriptive word. I was thrilled to see all my postings to APAP and PolesandJews (a Yahoo group like this one) out there and have received a few inquiries via this route.
I think members would agree that postings should not only be relevant to the group but well-written and properly presented. Short messages saying "hi" or making a passing comment or correction just clog the site and dull the reader's brain. I think of a posting as an articulate and researched presentation to a group gathered at a seminar focusing on a specific subject. With proper punctuation and grammar and footnotes where possible. Thanks Chris Gladun

Is there any way to get the adverts to switch of
it's causing a download problem and will slow things down when they
(messages) get bounced between subscribers
I know that Topica only has a footer advert in plain text and it's
fast

goes
into greater detail on areas that I was already familiar with.
Thanks for letting us know about it, Stef.

Premier Jerzy Buzek opened the "Index of the Repressed"
Internet Center in
the Karta offices in Warsaw, incorporating data on Polish citizens
"repressed" in the USSR after 17 September 1939.
In the internet version of the database
(),
opened
yesterday, are records on 120,000 people arrested during the Soviet
occupation in 1939-41.
"Whichever political party comes to power, there have to be
ongoing
examinations of recent history and non-governmental organisations must
exist
to undertake this task" - said the government leader
yesterday.
Present for the opening of the internet version of the index, President
Leon
Kieres of the Institute for National Memory (Institut Pamieci
Narodowej)
assured that the Institute does not wish to take the place of such
public
institutions like Karta, but rather wishes to cooperate with
them.
