The last time I had contact with Mrs Hawran at the M.O.D. she was very helpful. Give her a phone and perhaps you will be able to talk her into assisting you. Letters can be so clinical. By the way if you speak Polish even better. Adrian Nessel Scotland (10 mins from Edinburgh) ----- Original Message -----

Can I explain something on the MoD subject. I also had to send them ?25 for info on my uncle, when you write to them they will send you a NoK form on which you must prove/state that you are either the next of kin or a direct descendant once they receive this form with payment they will send you the documentation. All you have to do is to tick the relevant box and state your name and relationship and sign it. If by chance they ever get round to check and find out that you weren't any relation then you're in trouble. Otherwise all will be OK. They are very accommodating at that office. The British thoroughness is essential. The most important information you can have, apart from personal particulars such as father's name, d.o.b and place of residence before the deportation, is the name of the camp and d.o.d. Sadly I don't have this information but sent off my letter anyway. Alexander was very helpful though he stressed that from his experience in dealing with the authorities in Kazakhstan probably not much would be forthcoming. Still, whatever information you have is better than none. On another note I just received a letter from the Ministry of Defence in the UK in response to my request for information re. my grandfather, a sergeant major in the Polish army who emigrated to Edinburgh after/during the war. Apparently they will only give out this information to the next of kin. If, and I quote, my grandmother is still alive (if she was that would make her 111!), then she needs to fill out the form and the search will be free of charge. If she is dead, then whoever is next of kin can then apply for the information at a cost of 25 quid. This is my father who I no longer have contact with (really "together" family I come from, I know) so I'm not too hopeful about retrieving anything from them. How's about I write the nice lady in the office a letter explaining why my grandmother would never have been able to make such a request on account of her being deported from her native Poland by the Russians and subsequently dying in a camp, alone in Kazakhstan in the 1940s, and that it was because of the war that my grandfather ended up living in Edinburgh as a "hotel worker", while my father ended up in Australia and here I am in Singapore wondering what my roots are. The film..............
A Forgotten Odyssey was shown last night on the History channel
there's also another film worth watching as it should show parts of the Kresy regions it's a three part documentary on Stalin shown a part each night today it should show the period up to the Soviet invasion of Poland since it has been going in that direction. I'll tape it and if I'm right I 'll let the group know Paul |

Rachael, I would immediately direct you to the website This has a rich set of links to various sites with background information. It will take you hours to surf them all - it is like hitting a rich vein of gold! There is a book in English that can be ordered at the link "Stalin's Ethnic Cleansing" that tells the survivors' stories. You may also wish to view the film documentary, which is excellent and recounts the experiences of the survivors. While it has been shown on the UK History Channel, it has not been broadcast in the US yet and is not yet commercially distributed. However, the producers (Jagna and Aneta) have made it available for viewing by Polonia groups and their guests. We do not yet have a contact in Minnesota (closest is Wes in Chicago) - if you are interested in organising something in MN please let me know! If you wish to research your families records in the Soviet archives, Dr Alexander Guryanov of the Polish Committee of Memorial in Moscow has kindly offered to organise searches for our group members. Please visit the website and check the previous messages for details (or e-mail me off list). Finally, please visit our Kresy-Siberia website and read the archived messages to catch up on the conversation and read some of the other members' introductions. The group is still pretty new, but has nearly 60 members and 250 messages already. Rachel, we have people in the group who personally (or their families) went through Siberia and Persia, and some through the African and the Indian refugee camps. I am sure that this growing group will help speed you on your journey of discovery enormously. Please ask us any specific questions and let us know how your research progresses. -- Stefan Wisniowski Moderator, Kresy-Siberia ---------- From: "rachael jarosh" <rjarosh@...> |

Hi Jan
I believe that the critical information needed to search for a person's records are: name, names of parents (especially. father's), birthdate, and place of residence. ?Ideally, dates of deportation and region deported to. ?What ever you can provide will be a clue. I suggest that you e-mail Alexander directly at gurpolcom@..., but if you get any results please share the news with us! Good luck,-- Stefan Wisniowski Moderator, Kresy-Siberia From: JCBSERV@... know, our focus is on the Polish citizens who lived primarily in eastern Poland and were deported east by the Soviets (and by the Tsars before them). A large number of the citizens of the Wolyn, Lw¨®w, Tarnopol and Polesie provinces of Kresy in inter-war Poland, formerly Galicia in the Austrian Empire, were Rusyns and Ukrainians - and a number of them (especially those who were property owners) were deported east by the Soviets. I hope that you may be able to share some of your research with the group. -- Stefan Wisniowski Moderator, Kresy-Siberia ---------- From: john <john@...> |

Hi Jan and group Thanks for the recent messages. ?Messages may sometimes appear out of context because members could e-mail each other privately, and then may choose to share a discussion "in progress" with the group because it becomes of broader interest. In this case, I think that the discussion of Uralsk and Semipalatinsk labour camp records was initiated by Mark Terech, in reference to his family deported there. ?Alexander heads the Polish Committee of the Memorial group in Moscow, and has helped several of us to obtain deportation and camp records and "certificates" from the old Soviet archives. Here is a hint for members. ?You can review ALL the messages ever sent to the group on our website. ?There is even a search function for key terms. ?So, for example, if you go to the Messages link ?on our web page and search for "Uralsk", it brings up all messages with this reference. Pre-War List of Osada in Kresy
Elizabeth Olsson
Greetings listers,
I have forwarded your question to my Mother (in London). Meanwhile, the first Kresy Book "Wspomnienia z osad wojskowych 1921-1940" includes a list of 87 military settlements and 2 civilian, giving addresses: gm, pow and woj. Some of the articles include lists of names of the settlers too. Maybe not 100% accurate but it's always a start. There are maps and photos too. If anyone wants me to check a specific osada for names, contact me privately. Elzunia Olsson (in Sweden) <<<From: Stefan Wisniowski <swisniowski@...> Subject: Re: Pre-War List of Osada in Kresy Building on Ewa's letter, I would think that the old "association of osadnicy" may have had an archive in the Polish national archives somewhere - and it would probably have the list of osady, maps, etc. Perhaps Elzunia Olssen can ask her Mum (who is connected to the Association of the Families of the Borderland Settlers) about the name of the old association of settlers. Also, the 2nd Republic Polish government would have had files on the land grants, and they may have been preserved in the national archives in Warsaw. Can anybody suggest a way to move forward with this? Stefan>>> <<<Does anyone know whether or not the Government of Poland ever compiled a complete list of all Kresy osada (settlements) that were in existence prior to the start of World War II? Since many osada were totally destroyed during the War or by the Soviets, I would hate to think that there is no official record of these places. It would also be nice to know exactly which osada were destroyed and which (hopefully) were incorporated into the villages that they were next to, but I know it would be a miracle to find this out! Paul Havers, also a member of our group, has put forth his best effort as always, and has a list of osada on his Kresy site, but it is not all inclusive. It occurred to me that if one does not know which village was next to the osada or village in question, one may never be able to locate the place, which is truly horrible. I am fortunate in that I do know the name of the place of my father's birth. It was Hallerczyn, next to the village of Wysocko, which is near Brody. The Wisniowski and Jesionka families were deported from Brody on the same day, 10 February 1940. Of course, you all know Stefan Wisniowski, who is the moderator of this list. My grandfather Maksymilian owned the mill in Hallerczyn. I think Stefan's grandfather was similar to what we call in the US, the county extension agent. His job was to inform local farmers of the newest methods or to help them with specific problems related to farming. We both like to think our grandfathers knew one another, and I am fairly certain that they did. I can imagine Stefan's grandfather asking mine, "Maks, from what you've seen of the crops, who needs my help?" Eve Jankowicz New Jersey, USA >>> |

Re: SURVIVORS of the War
Hi all,
I know the discussion re. the Holocaust Museum has been going on for some time here and I put in my two cents worth some time ago, and while I have no problem with anyone wanting to register their names/family names at this site if that's what feels right for them I just want to point out what is probably obvious to everyone about the 'Righteous Among Nations' section of the museum from the clippings that have just been posted to this site. That is, it is about those Poles/others who helped the Jews - thus confirming what I said a while back about the museum being primarily related to the Jewish tragedy. I agree that there needs to be an independent site or avenue for educating others about all those Poles who suffered under the Soviets and would very much like to be a part of putting something together. I don't know how I can help - perhaps with collating and researching information/organisations, but I am at a bit of a disadvantage because I don't speak, read or write Polish. Still, I feel strongly about being a part of this so perhaps I could be part of a 'working group'. Regards Grace |

Please welcome Denis Sycz to the group. Here is a bit on his background.
-- Stefan Wisniowski Moderator, Kresy-Siberia ---------- I'm trying to find some information on my father's family; My father was Wladyslaw SYCZ, born 23 April 1924 in Chryniki, what was then Poland. His religion was Catholic. He emigrated to Australia in 1950 aboard the S.S. Nelly. I have very little information about his family but I'm led to believe that the town of Chryniki was in the area of Boremel in the County of Dubno. (This information was from "place names of Volhynia"). Any information no matter how small would help. Thanks Denis Sycz |
Re: SURVIVORS of the War
Dear Jan and others,
I have not had an opportunity to get to the museum yet.... what did spark my interest was this web-site: remember.org/forgotten/kidnaped.html I invite you to visit and read what one man has to say about how he was kidnapped, sent to work in a slave labor camp, and then spent years in a dp camp.? Since this is a story very similar to what happened to my family, I have no hesitation about standing shoulder to shoulder with Mr. Wardzala and the other Poles who are registered, and sharing my family history at the museum. This, of course, is what feels right for me....... I think that Jan mentioned that there is a section titled The Righteous Among the Nations, I just found this - the Jews actually do credit the Poles! Yad Vashem - The Righteous Among the Nations Number of Holocaust Rescuers by Country* and Ethnic Origin As of January 1, 2001 The Yad Vashem museum in Israel, founded in 1953, honors both Holocaust martyrs and "the Righteous Among the Nations," Gentile (non-Jewish) rescuers who have been recognized for their "compassion, courage and morality" because they "risked their lives to save the lives of Jews." Poland ranks first among 40 nations with 5,503 men and women, almost one-third of the total, despite the fact that only in Poland were citizens (and their loved ones) immediately executed if caught trying to save Jews. Many prominent Jews and their families owe their lives to these brave but rarely acknowledged people. For example, Abraham Foxman, director of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai Brith/USA, was saved by a Polish Catholic nanny who had him baptized as a Catholic and began raising him as her son in order to save him. - Edward Lucaire |
website/database www.aforgottenodyssey.com
Steve Roy
Hi
I am the web master of aforgottenodyssey.com Through the meeting of my father John Roy-Wojciechowski and Stefan Wisniowski I decided to help by creating the web site with Stefan. Stefan (and others) provide me with the information needed and I just turn it into HTML. What I would like to propose to the group is the forming of a database that is connected to the web site. I would be willing to create the database and interface it to the web site. However being a technical person I would need ideas on what fields would be required in the database and how to search for information. A field would for example be a surname, city, date etc So my question really is, as the end user what information would you want to find in the database and what fields would you want to search on? Thanks Steve Roy-Wojciechowski |
