Subject: [Kresy-Siberia] An Unexpected Opportunity

Just thought I would share this with you ....
I was in the office (last Friday) of our large Adult Learning Centre
where we have many programs. One of them being a chance for young
people( who have quit school or have been thrown out for a variety of
reasons) to come and to try to get their high school diploma. I
overheard a young teacher (history) sharing with another that she was
finishing a unit on World War Two with a class of such students..
I quickly jumped in asking her if she wanted a speaker to share some
personal experiences.....to bring the history alive...being a very
wise teacher she agreed but "could I do this on monday"...of course
seeing this as a teachable moment said "yes". I had to make some
changes to my schedule and plans but I did it. I showed the Forgotten
Odessey which the teacher thought was excellent and I gave a half
hour talk sharing the odessey of my parents and family. Both the
teacher and I were so inpressed with the attention and reaction of
these "special " students. You could not hear a pin drop and they
were totally moved. I was pleased that I took this unexpected
opportunity to share our story ie our history with 30 young people
and a teacher who intends to teach this again with all her future
classes.
Just for Information ...for those living in southern Ontario I will
be showing the film "The Forgotten Odessey" in english on
Sunday, November 9....3:00 pm (close to November 11 ..Remembrance Day)
Polish Legion....601 Wellington N. Kitchener
I am sending special invitations to sons and daughters and
grandchildren of "Sybiraki"...because many of them do not know the
history of their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc.
I will post this also on the Forgotten Odessey site
Sorry for being so long winded !!!
