Ever had a burning urge to watch the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II? Or
witness the heroics of Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space? Or even
relive the Soviet invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia? Up until now
it has been virtually impossible with all 38,000 films and 1 million
photographs of Russia's Central Films and Stills Archive held in guarded
vaults in a 19th century building in Krasnogorsk, outside Moscow, and
access granted only to a select few. However, the entire collection is
being placed online, including a virtually complete collection of
newsreels from 1919 to 1985 documenting the politics, wars, disasters
and people of the former United Soviet Socialist Republic. The project
is being realized thanks to an agreement between Russian authorities and
a Texas-based multimedia companyAbamedia, whose website hosts the
archive. Already there are over 25,000 films in Russian and about 5000
films in English online, as well as thousands of pictures - from Soviet
propaganda posters to oriental art from the Far East and Central As
