Hello Stefan:
Thank you Stefan and others who have been so helpful in my search.
Right now I have at least 3 good leads to go on and a few other possible
leads. I'm sorry I haven't responded. It's strange, I'm very
comfortable with this form of communication and usually I can blather on
with the best, but I've noticed that I haven't written much with this
group. I have been helped and seen others helped, so I definitely
appreciate the listserv. I think I'm still coming to terms with the
suffering and hardships, that my father and so many other fathers,
mothers, sons and daughters had gone through, but in an emotional
level. Also, although I heard excerpts from my father, I never realized
the extent or such detail of the deportations. I'm also angry. I never
learned about this in school (elementary or secondary or even University
level). Whatever I knew came from my father and a few other ex-pat
Poles. It is a great shame that it has taken so long for such
discussions to arise, but I am grateful that it is being discussed now.
It seems a lot more has been spoken of since 1989.

I will write again.

I read your letter and searched for any information re your father among
our files, and I think I found one document of Jozef Zelwietro - his
handwritten testimony about plebiscyte arranged by soviet army in
Bortkiewicze in October 1939. I will mail you the copy, if you provide me
with the postal address.
I work for the Hoover Institution Archives, by the way.

I hope this gives you a clue. While I could not find the village in
Shtetlseeker (which is usually very good), I did find Asmjany about 15km
Southeast of Wilno and just inside Belarus (Belorussia). This was part of
Poland between the wars, and a good chance it was the town of the Oszmina
county you referred to. Have you tried the PolandBorderSurnames group with
this?

I don't know where the archives or records for Wilno province ended up after
the war, and whether you need to look in Vilnius, Minsk or back in Poland.

Did you contact the person in Wilno suggested by Wladyslaw?

Also, did you contact the army records office in England for the 2 Corpus,
who may have more information on your father in their records?
