Re: Looking for an interconnect cable and PC board connectors for a TS-690S

Hi Donald,

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, the real estate on the PC boards
is too limited to mount SMA connectors directly to the boards. If I were to
use SMA connectors, they would have to be mounted on pigtails and that would
defeat the aesthetics I'm looking for.

I found some small two-pin board mounted connectors that look extremely
similar to the original Kenwood connectors, but are not absolutely
identical. I connected the mating female connectors to each end of the coax
cable and the whole setup looks almost exactly like the factory product. The
only issue is that it is not exactly the same connector as all of the
others, but unless someone is looking with a magnifying glass to check for
originality, one can't tell the difference.

Anyway, the radio is working fine, so I'm happy!

Stan,

I know you're trying to make the radio the way it was from the factory, so
this suggestion is only if you can't find the connectors you're looking for.

If you don't find the connectors you're looking for, perhaps you could use
SMA connectors, which are cheap and easy to source, as are pre-made cables
with SMA connectors on them. They're small, and there should be PC board
mount versions of the connectors. This would make it more professional
looking.

Of course, you could buy a TS-690S that's a basket case for a parts radio
and use the connectors from it (or the boards with those connectors already
on them). If you find one cheap enough, that might not be a bad choice, as
you'll have some spare parts if you want to keep the radio working for many
more years.

Best wishes in your attempt to restore the radio to a better looking "OEM"
look.

no idea why someone would do this, but regardless, I'd like to restore this
radio to its original condition.

Does anyone know where I can find a couple of the two-pin PC board
connectors (Kenwood p/n E40-3237-05)? and the interconnect cable (possibly
Kenwood p/n E37-0227-05)?

Kenwood hybrid cover pins

Hello Members,
I hope this is okay for me to post. I have recently designed and printed the cover pins for the kenwood hybrid radios. I am offering them on eBay. I have never found another source for them. They are designed to be as close to original as possible.

Here is the link if anyone is interested.

Re: TS-450S received signal distortion after short warm uup

I had a similar issue with my TS450SAT about six years ago.? My resolution was to remove the CAR board (under the speaker bracket), clean the CAR circuit board mounting screw ground pads (both sides) lightly with an eraser, remounting the board and shield ensuring that the screws were tight.? It's been working fine ever since.

Re: TS-690S transmits on 6m but not on HF

After finding that the output from the RF board to the amplifier board was nowhere close to the proper amplitude, I focused my attention on the RF board. I checked and rechecked the board, but couldn't see anything obviously wrong with the connections or with the board itself. By chance, I found someone selling the same board at a very reasonable price, so I bought it and installed it in my radio. Now everything works as it should.

As an exercise I may look over the old RF board more carefully, but now that the radio is working I'm certainly not going to board swap to troubleshoot the old board. If I find anything of interest on the failed board, I'll be sure to post to the group, but otherwise I consider this a successful conclusion to my repair adventures.

Thanks to everyone for all of their help and encouragement!

TS-450S received signal distortion after short warm uup

Has anyone had this happen, and found the culprit? PLL board? IF board source? The known filter cap that leaks on in the audio coupling has been replaced. Thanks, and this is a great group!

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the pointer, but the connector I need is the simple two-pin male connector in a white rectangular housing, similar to the other multi-pin inline connectors on the various boards in the radio.

Not sure, but this may be what you are looking for. They are the connectors that are used in a Kenwood TS-930.

You’re probably correct, and I suppose it really is the true spirit of amateur radio to come up with non-standard fixes, but ?it still bothers me when I see these “unelegant” repairs.

Someone probably had a bad cable and couldn't find a replacement so they soldered in a small coax to get the radio working.
