Re: Hello! New to the group, and already have a question

Just take note of the sheen of the finish, too, not just the color. Is it shiny,
flat, matte, etc.? You will either want that type of finish in the paint you buy
or you will want a clearcoat that offers the same finish.

The person analyzing the color for you at the paint store might be able to help
with that.

FWIW, I've heard that Sherwin Williams makes pretty good paint matches for older
equipment. I think it was mentioned on one of the two Heathkit lists.

Hi Bob,

?

If I remember correctly, the problem on the original boards was one or two of the SMD transistors. I¡¯d have to go digging to be certain, though.

?

I seem to remember repairing one of the boards in one of my radios at the time and then making up a board with the LT1054 chip for the other radio.

?

I also replaced the volume/squelch pots in both radios as well at the time.

?

It is probably about 7 or 8 years ago now as I haven¡¯t had those radios for about 6 years now as I bought a nice new TS2000X which does everything that the others did and a lot more. ?

Can't get my VS-3 Voice Synthesizer to work in my TS-2000X

Hello,

I recently purchased a TS-2000X with a known defective serial port. I replaced the failed serial port driver chip and was able to communicate with the radio and update the firmware.

A few days ago I located a VS-3 voice synthesizer module and installed it, but I couldn't get it to work. All that it did when pressing the PF key (programmed for VOICE1) was to produce a single beep. No voice whatsoever. I reset the radio, checked and rechecked the menu settings for PF assignment and voice level, but it still didn't work. I could program to PF key for other functions and the key worked as it should.

I was able to return the VS-3, presuming it was defective, and got a brand new one, but it does exactly the same thing.

The VS-3 connector looks fine, and every other function of the radio that I have tested is working. I do not have the DRU-3A voice recorder module installed (I understand that they share some of the same digital lines).

Any ideas are very much appreciated!

TS-770

Hi all,

I have recently bought a TS-770 that appears to have a duff PLL chip.
The chip is the SM6422A and is mounted on the X50-1530-00 PLL(A) board.
I hear that these chips are quite hard to find, and with that in mind does anyone have an old 770 they are using for parts that may contain a board they are wiling to sell ?

Failing that, does anyone know of a near equivalent (no necessarily pin-compatible) fro a different set, maybe? a Yeasu similar VHF/UHF transceiver that may be used to do the job ?

Anyone here using a TS-770 ?

David.

Hopefully someone here has a way to get that radio to put out 100 watts.
However, based on recent Icom radios purchased from the Japanese market at a
lower price, then brought to the USA for use, those radios are hardwired so the
frequencies and power limit for Japan can't be changed in firmware or hardware
(by cutting diodes in a matrix).

I hope that is not the case with the 590 you have, and your radio is older than
the ones I've seen being discussed recently in Icom forums, so maybe it can be
changed.

The other thing I'll mention is that your final transistors may be only able to
handle 50 watts. You might check the transistors called out in schematics for
both the Japanese and the USA models to see if they use the same transistors. If
all you want to do is to change the output power, and if the output transistors
are the same in radios for both markets, you might be able to rework the driver
and/or output stage to put out more power. It might be something as simple as
changing some resistors.

That I haven't seen. I'll have to check on that. The way it's mounted there could be something putting some pressure on it...

I've been having problems with that too. I used to be able to program it years ago with an old XP laptop that I still have, but it doesn't seem to work anymore. I'm thinking something went bad there too.
