Patron - WinLink Gateway
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks for being human like the rest of us. I live in a rural part of Mississippi now and would love to setup a gateway. Can I use a HT for it? ?Do you have a Howto on how to set this up?

I've used a Kenwood THD 72 with RMS Packet back before Raspberry?Pi came about. I used an external GP 6 dual-band antenna. It worked until I got a TNC-x (First one John Hanson created) added it to my first Kenwood V 71. later Don Poaps New Westminster, BC VA7DGP DATA VA7QU ? VOICE Winlink: va7qu@... A lot of people use old HTs for APRS Gateways and Digis. Stay away from the cheap Chinese ones for digital work though...the receivers leave much to be desired and you will miss out on a lot of decodes. On Mon, Dec 6, 2021, 14:22 Don Poaps <va7dgp@...> wrote:

I've used my Mobilink TNC 3 for Winlink and APRS. I followed the early version of Pat Winlink KM4ACK Build a Pi. It works. My Pi is offline right now. I just used the script to load the Bluetooth tnc3. In the Pat Menu screen I remember Beta Mobilink tnc. I click on that and it loads RFcomm etc. If I remember?correctly Pat Winlink loads and I use va7dep-10 to connect to the Winlink Gateway. My PI will be put in service when I get my IC 7100 mounted in the mobile. 73 Don Poaps New Westminster, BC VA7DGP DATA VA7QU ? VOICE Winlink: va7qu@... Subject://wl2k ? ? ? ? ? Brian Dale and others may be?able to help. Give them time to answer etc. Jason and others will answer with the right info. All I know is that when I loaded Pat Menu. The Beta Mobilink runs all of the scripts to turn on Pat Winlink. I can't help as my PI is offline. I'll be doing a PI update when I get the IC 7100 in the new year. later Don Poaps New Westminster, BC VA7DGP DATA VA7QU ? VOICE Winlink: va7qu@... Subject://wl2k ? ? ? ? ? I do own a Mobilinkd but it stays in the car and I just haven't interfaced with the Pi. I'd be willing to mess with it if I didn't have so much going on right now.? The last two weeks have been unbelievably crazy. My mom came from TN to SC to be here for her grandson's birth. Unfortunately my wife's water broke the same morning my uncle (Mom's brother passed). She got to hold her grandson for 20 mins before having to head back to TN.? My wife had complications with the delivery and Epidural and had to go back to the hospital and has been on bed rest since. With no one here to help, I've been taking care of everyone wife, baby, 4 yr old, house, etc and maybe inking out 2-3 hrs of sleep a night. On top of that, me and the 4 yr. old are sick and trying not to pass it to mom and baby. Back in TN, Mom hurt her back and is on bedrest. She was laying down when the tornado came through and destroyed her neighborhood. Her house is likely a total loss and her car is not drivable. They had to carry her (with the messed up back) over all kinds of trees for a mule ride to my sister's house a mile or so down the road. No one has power there and the generator died last night. They are going to a hotel tonight.? I'm doing my best to coordinate with them in TN to get things moving with adjuster while taking care of things here. When I'm washing clothes and not on the phone, I've been hopping on the radio to help stay awake when I need to be. Lol 73 de AD4XJ -Brian On Mon, Dec 13, 2021, 15:06 Don Poaps <va7dgp@...> wrote:

For anyone else following along, here's the problem. The moblinkd is a hardware TNC. Direwolf is a software TNC. We have to choose only one to use. Since the startup script that I wrote for my build and shared on the channel uses direwolf, it won't work with the mobilinkd. The startup script will need to be modified to use the mobilinkd TNC instead of using Direwolf. It's possible to do, but takes time and testing. I may try to tackle this (no promises) in my shack and share on the channel in the future.

That would be great. I may take a look at it also. Which script should I look at.?

Hi Jim,
I don't have a TNC3 at the moment to test with but I'll try to get one ordered soon so I can test it with Pat Menu. It works fine with my TNC2 but there may need to be some tweaks to the code for the TNC3. Hence the reason this feature is still marked beta. There is a difference between the different models. The TNC2 uses channel 1 and the TNC3 defaults to channel 6. There are some older videos on my channel that may help you in the meantime. https://www.youtube.com/c/KM4ACK/search?query=mobilinkd -- 73, de KM4ACK

ARDOP isn't designed to work on VHF. From within Pat Menu, choose the Mobilinkd modem. This will start a packet connection that should be used on VHF. If you still can't get it to work, shoot me a message through Patreon. Outside of the TNC3, there is direwolf which will work with the 7100 and is probably a better method. Save the TNC3 for the 70D. ? -- 73, de KM4ACK

Dear All, Thanks to Jason's excellent tutorial on a Winlink Gateway using a RPi and a Signalink, SFARES?will shortly make a Winlink Gateway operational as W5SAF-10 on VHF only.? I was able to test the setup (RPi and Signalink) on an ICOM-880H, an Alinco DR-150 and an old IC-F320.? I believe it would work on most any VHF radio as long as you know the PIN setup. 73 de N4VIP, Don Hinsman On Sun, Apr 3, 2022 at 5:52 AM km4ack <jason.oleham@...> wrote: On Sat, Apr 2, 2022 at 09:57 PM, Jim Howard (JimNtexas) wrote: --

Don,
Did you ever connect your Pi directly to your Kenwood TM-D710? Before my BAP, I did so connecting a laptop running Winlink Express via the RT systems programming cable directly into my Kenwood and setting my Kenwood to Packet mode. Tried the same on my Pi today with zero luck. Wondered if you ever attempted this. By the way, my error messages are: After successfully starting the packet modem--"unable to establish connection to remote: No AX.25 ports configured". This often involved switching USB ports, rebooting, etc. And when unable to start the packet modem--"The PACKET Modem FAILED to Start" Looking for Winlink options while on the road.... -- Jack Haefner |
