I posted something on this awhile back and am just now able to work on it. The Digirig is wonderful with radios that have CAT control and I can use FlRig. VARA HF works wonderfully well.
However, on those radios without CAT capability and just the audio cable connected to the Digirig, how do you get the radio to key with VARA FM or packet ?? I tried different audio levels and I even tried FlRig as a NO RIG with just the generic PTT. Nothing I have tried works so far. The radios are the FT-65r and the VX-8dr.
On a MS Surface Go using Win10, it works very well. I would like to get to this point using BAP.

As an addendum, I figured out packet. Direwolf is used as the modem when the Digirig in in line. So, I remember a video recently about Direwolf (which I had never used) and discovered a setting in Direwolf.conf that I had to uncomment out -> PTT /dev/ttyUSB0 RTS. When I saved that, packet began to work. The packets sent sounded a bit truncated compared to those I normally hear ie from Mobilinkd, but it finally worked and connected to my Gateway. AFAIK, there is no way to adjust tail length, delay, etc of the packets themselves.
The PTT setting in VARA FM I presume is in the Windows app that is called by Wine. Is there a config file I need to know about to modify in the same way ?

I don't have my Pi in front of me that I configured VaraFM and the Digirig with but if I remember correctly I had to play with the PTT settings in VaraFM under the Settings->PTT. Seems like I used COM port 1 and put a check by the RTS option. --

?But how do you get Vara FM to show up ? When the Vara FM modem is activated, I get an hourglass and then Chromium PAT inbox and that’s it. I don’t see the 4 dials as I would in Windows. If I just click Vara FM in the menu, I just get the hourglass and nothing else. If I click it again, it will tell me that the modem is already running - I don’t SEE anything.?
I haven’t clicked on Vara HF or just plain Vara, so maybe I need to explore this a bit deeper. It shouldn’t be this hard to setup. There’s an icon for Vara sound card setup, but it will only let you set the sound card, not anything else.

I tried all of that. Am I supposed to see the 4 dials while running the Vara modem ? If so, my installation is faulty. If it’s supposed to run in the background, we need a method to change settings that would ordinarily be on that drop menu on the dial window.
I can’t seem to get to it, no way, no how. And I’m stuck without a PTT setting for the Digirig. If I were to change interfaces, I would still need to adjust those settings. I just need to get to them.

I've been banging my head on my computer desk with the Raspberry Desktop Pi OS using Intel version of Build a PI. Denis K0TX of Digirig posted a screen of FLrig 1.44 (I was running Win 10 on my Toughbook) . I was able to get my Xiegu G 90 to work. The version that's loaded in the Build a PI that W1BAW has written is FLrig 1.47.?
See if it's version 1.47. The menu settings for PTT-Generic are not the same that Denis showed me for Win 10 FLrig 1.4.4

The vara on my laptop runs but I get a message saying it failed. As soon as I click OK on error message. The Pat Web Gui loads. I was banging my head on my desk trying to get the Xiegu G 90 (Digirig) to PTT. The FLrig finds the Digirig PnP Codec. I had to go to config > ptt-generic > at the PTT on Cat Serial Port > CAT changed to BOTH, RTS changed to BOTH and saved.?
Now I can use Xiegu G 90 on JS8CAll. I'm working on finding a 20 m Winlink Gateway I can quickly tune the mag loop and talk and get messages.

I think you guys usurped the thread I started ! HI HI No problems - carry on.
Jason - one possibility - I have been accessing the RPi using a iPad by VNC. That may not be enough desktop space to SEE the 4 dials which may be lurking off to the side. I’ll hook up things with a larger monitor and see if it’s actually there. There ought to be a way to move renegade windows with some sort of command. Also, I don’t see an icon on the running app bar at the top for this. Quite confusing, but I’ll keep at it. :)

Look at View and click on what you want. Vara sits on top covering Action in Pat Winlink. Lucky Ready can find Winlink Gateways. I modified mine vara to show gauges?only

And THAT is what it was all along !! I put the RPi on a larger screen and, ?lo and behold, there were the gauges !! I was able to set the Digirig PTT finally and it worked well. The gauges however did not offer anything useful. The audio level was always in the red and when I tried to adjust the levels with alsamixer, it didn’t change - even when everything was muted. The audio from the HT was at a whisper as well.
So, I don’t know what’s going on there. But, I was successful in connecting to my gateway with Vara FM by trial and error with audio levels and I’m happy !! I DID move the gauge window to a spot that would make it show up on my iPad and tested that with VNC successfully.
