73Linux on orangepi zero v3 4G with debian 12 (bookworm) xfce
Has anyone tried installing 73Linux on it yet?? The low power drain is nice.? My board is happy so far?doing the basics, though a bit choppy with full screen video.? I bought this cheap, with the big heat sink, for small package qrp pota type digital mode operating, and am now ready to try installing some 73Linux software.? I will VNC into it with a tablet so that the one USB port (without the USB hat) is available for the digirig interface.
So the next step is a VNC server. Recommend any particular VNC server? Any issues from experience that I should avoid?? Will the Debian distro be significantly different from ubuntu, in where 73Linux aims to put things in the file system?? The github page seems to suggest that ubuntu has been tested.? What about the xfce Debian 12? Thanks in advance, 73 Karl S K4GMV |
I'm running Debian 12 Xfce on old, lightweight x64 netbooks for simultaneous flrig, fldigi, and JS8Call.? No 73Linux and little other software, but I'm pleased with performance.? The lightweight windows manager makes a big difference.? Performance under Linux Mint 20 and 21 was "okay" and improved with lighter windows managers, but I tired of all the bloat of the downstream Debian distros, not to mention tangles of dependencies that popped up at the worst times.
x11vnc has been the go-to VNC here for straight Debian installs.? Simple, installs from the GUI package manager (Synaptics), works with TightVNC viewer, which I prefer, on Windows machines, and is good enough for my simple LAN connection needs.? If jumping through firewalls and across untrusted networks was on the agenda, I'd do differently. I haven't used Ubuntu for years, but Mint is a downstream derivative.? My experience is that it's not much of a leap back to straight Debian.? YMMV.? Again, I can't say what that means with 73Linux.? For a full-blown desktop, versus an appliance netbook, I might opt back for one of the dressed-up distros and its default windows manager. ? Dan ? N7SHM |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMint also has a true Debian-based version called LMDE, so you don¡¯t have to use the Ubuntu-based version.Gerry Curry 546 Cedar Lake Rd Cedar Lake, NS, B5A 5L8 phone (902) 307-1504 gerry@... iChat & AIM - gcurry@... www.gerrycurry.com |
Thank you to all.? It helps much.? I found yesterday that the OPiZ3, without an RTC, after 4 hours, was 50 minutes behind, so an RTC is a must for JS8Call, FT8, FT4, and similar precise timing WSJTX types of modes. An avg of 300mA drain is very nice.? I do think I'll wire in an extra USB port to the on board header, for the DigiRig, so I can use a direct keyboard/mouse as an option, instead of only the VNC tablet approach.? And bring a small SW rx for confirming time with WWV or CHU, when offgrid.
I'll check back here for any more thoughts someone may want to share about it. Great community.? :-) 73 Karl S. K4GMV |
