added UDP port 11123 to my router under the raspi ip address listed for wireless. still can't get it to bring up a GPS on conky. just says "NO GPS". when i run cgps, no data entered into the fields...

Both options will disable the on-board Wifi. The Hotspot will use the dongle if it is available, as to hotspot auto-starting if there isn't a local wifi network, I haven't tested, but it does work

Have you tried enabling hot_plug in config.txt? I have not seen lagging issues with mine that are headless, but I did enable hot_plug and set resolution in raspi-config. N0LOZ
