Did you install the hotspot itself? You need the actual hotspot script and hotspot tools. You could still use build-a-pi and only install those two things.

This sounds like you are losing your connection due to being indoors and the GPS can't get a clear view of the sky. Does this happen if the pi/gps is outside?
