Re: Raspi4 USB boot

Pics aren't showing for some reason??

Re: First post

This is currently the easiest way to get up and running quick with the pi
We that said, we are currently testing a new version of the script. Should be out in a few weeks.

First post

I've been lurking on the YouTube channel and procrastinating for a while (there's a Pi-3 somewhere in my shack, still boxed up). Some of the commands stir old memories of Solaris from work but I'm really starting from scratch and here to learn. ARRL FD will be very different this year and I'm planning to operate from home class 2E, totally on battery, I'm hoping to use my Raspberry Pi with an iPad for FT8 as well as logging.?

Re: Raspberry Pi no longer recognized

Paul,

This is a result of DHCP in your router. Some routers allow you to assign static IP addresses for each MAC address that connects. This is the way I set mine up. Another possible option is to setup static IP address on the Pi itself. I don't do this but it is an option.

In a terminal window on the pi, you can type "hostname -I" (note: last letter is a capital i) to see the current IP addresses that the pi has.

Re: Building a Raspberry Pi 4 for use with a Handheld

If you want to make the most of your HT, I recommend a roll up j-pole antenna. This will allow you to get the antenna a bit higher up. N9TAX builds a great role up j-pole. Just put his call sign in the search box on Ebay.

Re: Building a Raspberry Pi 4 for use with a Handheld

Great. Thanks. This will get me started. I have a Signalink that I have tried to go from my pc to the local repeater for Winlink but with no success. I added a 15-inch antenna recently but have not gotten back to Winlink to see if it helps.I will add the items you have suggested and go from there.

Thanks again,
Richard

Richard,

You will need a sound card to interface between the pi and the radio. Take a look at either a signalink or mobilinkd. The signalink is a soundcard with VOX built in so it will be able to handle PTT. Mobilinkd is a hardware TNC that will handle audio and PTT. You will need to verify that they support your HT. Provided the signalink supports your HT, it may prove a bit more useful in the future as you change/upgrade radios. Also, the mobilinkd is only good for VHF/UHF. When you upgrade to HF and want to play with other digital modes, the signalink will work but the mobilinkd will not.

On the software side of things, you will need Pat Winlink, ax25, and direwolf at a bare minimum. I would also recommend Pat Menu to help manage Pat Winlink. You will need the hotspot if you want to connect to the pi in the field using VNC. HotSpot-Tools is great for managing the hotspot. Pi-APRS is a nice app if you want to start playing with APRS via the ISS.

Other's that own the FT-2DR may have other suggestions as well.

Re: Raspi4 USB boot

Does anyone know if this can take higher than 12 V input? What is the upper?limit?

failing that, a powered USB hub should work.

Re: Raspberry Pi no longer recognized

SUMMARY:

For anyone who may run into this issue, here's what I have discovered...

I guess it has to do with Dynamic IP addresses? In any case, it seems that every time the router (or maybe the Pi, but I think the router) is turned off, when it comes back on it has reassigned the Raspberry Pi a new IP address. When I take one of the app-discovered "generic" IPs, I find my Pi and log right in.

My screen now shows NETWORK/HOTSPOT addresses of: 192.168.42.6 (wireless IP address) and 192.168.42.63 (wired IP address).

I fear I will have this problem continuously until I learn how to make the IP address static. But, I am in, and Jason's Build-A-Pi script (and full backup) have worked flawlessly. Og, and I've added Ham Clock!

Re: Raspi4 USB boot

Infortunately I can't see the photos! Might have to check my settings

Re: Raspi4 USB boot

I'm using the PI foundations recommended power supply. It's 2.5amp I think.

Re: Raspi4 USB boot

Not Yet. Still waiting for parts. Hoping they will be in today or tomorrow. I might give berryboot a try. I may set up 2. Trade them out andd see what works best for me. I do want to look at using an SSD, but up here they are so friggin expensive still. That was my first plan.

Berry boot caught my eyes a little while ago. I do have a powered USB hub, and 10 or so standard laptop drives that I can experiment with. I may as I say set one up with berry boot, and mod another and run a few comparisons.. I'll let everyone know the results at my end..

Re: Raspi4 USB boot

I've was planing on using Berryboot at first. But The SD's have a tendency to burn out in time.I've woke up to the smell of melting plastic more than once! I've tossed 4 or 5 over the last 2 years or so. The USB keys are much faster on USB 3.. The cost od the USB key is $40 here in Canada, and a 120gb SSD runs close to $100 or more. So trying to be cheap!.. Plus with the new changes, unlike the older boards, once you do the mod, the RPi 4 can still boot from the? Micro SD card should you decide to go back.

Re: Raspi4 USB boot

I have one on order. Right now? it is at Canadian Customs. So I should have it anywhere from today to next month! Thought about that Idea as soon as I saw this..
I also have a powered hub here, And was thinking about incorporating that into the setup.

Steven

Re: Raspberry Pi no longer recognized

Edited

Follow up: I got in using the new IP address that comes up as "generic"; I renamed it ¡°Raspberry Pi (new)¡±.

So, I¡¯m connected again, but I have no idea why the IP address was changed. Apparently the router/network may do that? ???¡á?

Re: Raspberry Pi no longer recognized

I¡¯m glad I took your suggestion. It boots it just fine and connects to my 2g connection with no problems. This leads me to think it¡¯s something with my router and network settings. I just can¡¯t access it using my Mac.?

Previously the RPi IP was 192.168.42.8. Because I was connected to the internet I looked up how to find the Pi's IP address. I typed ¡°hostname -I" and got?192.168.42.6. My IP finding app says that connection is "Generic". Not knowing much about this stuff, I¡¯m at a loss.

If any of this makes sense to anyone and can provide back, I¡¯m all ears! :-D

Building a Raspberry Pi 4 for use with a Handheld

I am intrigued by Jason's videos about the features of Pi 4, especially the V2 Build a Pi video. I only have a Yaesu FT-2DR HT at this point and most likely will stay with VHF/UHF when upgrading to a mobile unit down the road. So what features should I install with the V2 script for VHF use? I am particularly interested in Winlink and Hotspot but am open to all ideas from the group.
Thanks,
Richard Gilbert

Re: TS 480SAT connections with RPi

Yes USB to Pi data port to sound card, easiest is to use Signalink with 6 pin mini din cable for Kenwood. Flrig on the Pi works great for radio control.

Yes. I would be using Flrig indeed....the radio cam with a usb/rs232 cable, I assume to connect to pc and use their rig control that I can download on their site....that would be the same cable to use for pi? From radio to usb Rpi? What about the data port, nothing?
