Re: Build-a-pi v3.0.3 beta

Yep, already knew all of that....but I am encouraged by your quick reply !!

Anyways I am having a devil of a time with the "raspberryconnect" stuff that is at the heart of the HOTSPOT. Seems like an underlying bug of some sort. Alas the problem is that the password handshaking doesn't complete with various devices I have tried it with hereabouts. Really sad. (And yes I "could" develop a testing protocol to get at the heart of the problem, but that will have to wait.)

Anyways that was the last of **several** coding wrinkles that were preventing uploading the "Headless and Wireless from the Get-Go" manifesto... hi hi. EVERYTHING is now fixed (as near as I can test) so...........; I will get that going before the end of Friday as I refuse to let this HOTSPOT poop "rule my roost" or further stand in the way of progress.

Re: Sound card for raspberry pi4

Sabrent seems to be playing fairly nicely so far....

Re: FT-891 and WSJT-X irregular transmission

I've tested several different configurations with cables, removed GPS, USB hubs and not,? and added ferrite beads (maybe I need different beads, recommendations?). Only thing I haven't done yet is shorten my USB cable and I'm afraid to do that. Will probably try to find a shorter one.?

All of that to say I still haven't solved the issue. Now that I understand what is going on, my setup is pretty much unusable. I'll get a CQ to transmit, get a few replies and then can't get a transmit signal out again to answer in a timely manner.?

Any other suggestions? Try a different sound card (Signalink) or other sound cable source?

To sum up, system seems to work just fine when something is transmitted. I have made QSOs and my signal is going around the world when it leaves the shack.

Thanks?again,

J.

The only time I have had this issue before, there was RF getting back into the pi. Try shorting all of the cables as much as possible and add ferrite beads to every cable. You might even want to remove all nonessential cables during testing.

Re: Sound card for raspberry pi4

Thanks Neil, ?I actually ordered a Sabrent today from Amazon...hopefully I have better luck with it. ?The Phaser uses 1/8" stereo jacks for the audio so its pretty convenient since its the same jacks the sound card has....

Re: Sound card for raspberry pi4

That's a bit like asking what's the best radio or how long is a piece of string?

It's been typically thought that you need to have good isolation between computer and radio so signal link, MiniProSC? or equivalent has been the go to for many years, however a simple USB sound card will also provide a decent result.? Check out Julian OH8STN's video on his ideal build which uses the Sabrent sound card?? I originally?used one of these as it doesn't need drivers and works well.? More recently?I've tried?a much cheaper version from Adafruit their 1475 audio adaptor which they recommend?for the pi and seems to be just as good??after I left my Sabrent somewhere and needed a quick replacement.

To make life easy I removed the case and made up a cable by soldering a line from the correct pins for mic & audio etc from the ACC plug for my Yaesu 817 to the sound card inputs and shrink wrapped everything.? Cheap, effective and I haven't noticed any problems so far although I wouldn't be surprised?if the USB ports had potential to inject some noise to the system.

Anyone have a recommendation on a sound card for the pi4 for ft8?? Was using one I ordered for my MacBook via a usb c to usb adaptor but the pi seemed to be injecting a lot of noise into the Audio signal ( looking at it on a scope) And now it seems to have died (sound card. It the pi). Was using it with a ft8 phaser and it started to have some weird issues where I would click tune in wsjt-x and it would cause the rig to go into TX but the signal sounded horrible (listening on main rig) and then it would not stop transmitting even after ¡°un-clicking¡± Tune....had to pull the audio cable to get it out of TX (phaser uses vox). I think this is all related to the ¡°dirty¡± audio from the pi.?

Re: Sound card for raspberry pi4

Yeah I use a signaling with the main rig and desktop but was wanting something smaller to use in the field with the Phaser. ?I think its a pi1 issue really, Im seeing reports of the USB3 ports making generating a lot of noise...

Re: Sound card for raspberry pi4

I have used the Signalink USB with my Pi 3B and 3B+ with great results on WSJT-X FT8. Of course I know this is more bulky than many would choose. The Sabrent is one that I've seen used with the Pi.

Re: Flrig and WJST

Bryan -- good evening.

Just use FLRIG for your rig control (including CAT.)
Set it up and let it initialise then in WSJT-X select 'FLRIG' rather than you actual rig.

Works fine on my KX3, K3 and FT-897D

Re: Build-a-pi v3.0.3 beta

1) - Conky sets to LARGE...it would be great if there was some way to set this within BAP ! (I'm suing vnc to a 1024x768 window....and medium is all it can do to show ALL of conky's info.)
Run this command to change Conky:
bash ~/pi-build/conky/setconky

In an upcoming release (probably 3.0.4) the setconky option will be available from the main pi menu.

2) - It took 4 attempts to fully load all of the packages that BAP allows you to select. I *know* this could be due to most anything, and not a problem for BAP directly, but PERHAPS somewhere in the docs this should be mentioned. (I'm not sure even IF this should be mentioned, but it was a bit disconcerting.)
Build a pi is set to only try each download a couple of times and move on if it can't access the website. This prevents it from getting hung on any particular download. However, I have seen this cause the issue you describe on slower internet connections or congested sites.

Re: 857 with Direwolf for 2M Packet

If you can't readily find the cable on HamMadeParts, recommend you email Les and ask him to build you a custom cable. ?He'll respond within a day and based on what radio you're using, and for what purpose, he'll identify exactly what you need.

Re: Flrig and WJST

Power cycle the 7300 when you've closed one app & then open the other.? Or, use flrig as your CAT control for WSJT.

I did not change anything on my 7300 nor anything on FLRIG.? Any ideas. It is driving me bonkers trying to figure this one out.?

Re: 857 with Direwolf for 2M Packet

I do have a rig control cable, yes, that runs from the pi to the 857 (through my YT-100 tuner). ?This is the cable I use:?https://www.amazon.com/Valley-Enterprises-FT-100-FT-817-FT-857/dp/B0035DV1ZM

?known issue. This bug appeared in 2.2.2.

Work around,

Open the WSJTX_Log file with any text editor (Notepad works), and change the <eh> to <eoh> .

Re: Odd ADIF problem with WSJTX 2.2.2

Apparently its a known problem in 2.2.2 - this thread from June over on their group applies:

Re: Build a Pi 3.0.2 released

Edited

I originally tried running this over the top of my existing build... you know... did it exactly like you said not to :) The idea was that it would "make my new GPS work". I have the BU-353 S4 USB GPS Receiver and initially it didn't work. I had already flashed a backup SIM with Raspabian so it wasn't hard to start fresh. I did the reboot for the install about an hour ago and everything, including the GPS, works. I'm in NW New Mexico, in a house that is stucco'd exterior walls (metal mesh holds that on, and a metal roof. The GPS is sitting on a window sill and when I checked it, all but one satellite was being used. When it worked, the other GPS rarely got a lock and most of the time it only saw 3 or 4 satellites max. Now to take it out and actually try to use it in the field.?

Nicely done Jason.
