Re: Weird GPS problems

Morning Jason,

Thanks for the note. I had watched your video and that is what inspired the testing. I already had the GPS receiver in-house and was wondering whether use of a USB3 port with a USB2 device would trigger the problem.

I learned two things:

1) A USB2 device plugged (card reader/writer) into the USB3 port and used does not cause the GPS to lose lock.
2) A USB3 device plugged into the port does not cause the GPS to lose lock. Use of the USB3 device will trigger the the problem and it does not resolve until the USB3 device is unplugged from the port. Then the GPS will regain lock after a few minutes (waiting for the daemon to reset the receiver).

I need to replicate the experiment a couple of times to confirm it is repeatable. I probably won¡¯t get to that until either tomorrow.

Like you, my goal is to minimize cords and cord length in the field. That I can use a USB2 card reader in the USB3 port without losing the GPS lock is workable in the field.

The next test will be to connect my radio to the Pi and see what happens to the system.

I¡¯m still looking at logging software.

Many thanks for the hard work.

Re: RTC

The GPIO on the Rpi4 is the same as that of the RPi3.

I use the same RTC's on both boards.

I was in the marine electronics business at the arrival of consumer GPS. I don¡¯t recall anything getting a fix from a cold start in a new location so fast.?

FT-891 - no RX

Jason,

I was recently able to purchase three IC-718 rigs for a reasonable price. That gives me four sitting as back up.

I have the cables so one can be hooked to the Build A Pi (and it works).

I am willing to loan one to you in you need a rig in the shack for further development.

Build a Pi 3.0.3 Released

The stable version (3.0.3) of build a pi is out. Provided you are running 3.0.2, upgrading should be as easy as running build a pi from the main menu. This version add compatibility for more GPS units and Gpredict satellite tracking software along with other minor fixes/tweaks.

Re: Weird GPS problems

It is the USB 3 port that is giving you the issue. I discovered this during this past field day. I have tested with multiple USB 3 thumb drives/adapters and all have produced the same results. I go over it in this video.

Either refrain from using USB 3 drives/adapters or look at this GPS unit It is a better receiver than the uBlox and has the additional cord length so the GPS can be moved away from the pi. My only fear with this GPS is that it may introduce RFI into the pi due to the longer cord. This may not happen every time but could happen given the right circumstances. I always hesitate to add long cords to the pi. I have been bitten in the past.

Mike,

Here's a list of accessories including the RTC that I have tested.

Re: GPS

Don,

That¡¯s an interesting unit. I might have to check one of those out.

Re: DRA 36 Sound card

Hi Don,

I just set up my home Winlink station to use UZ7HO Soundmodem with a SignaLink running Winlink Express; and also my RMS Packet Gateway with UZ7HO Soundmodem and the RMS Packet software.? They've both been working for a couple weeks now.? I'm running Windows 10 Pro, and just survived a massive update.

Anything I can do to help?

This only works on Linux so it works on Raspberry Pi but is not supported on Windows.
See the Direwolf User Guide section?9.2.8.5 "PTT with C-Media CM108/CM119 GPIO"

It describes how to use a C-Media GPIO pin to control PTT.? No wiring is needed other than the USB connector.? I use this with my DRA-30 card and my Raspberry Pi and it works great.

You must install the optional?libudev-dev then recompile Direwolf.? There are instructions in the User Guide on how to do this.
You change the direwolf.conf file to include?
PTT CM108

Mike,

This is unit I'm using. It plugs right in and works just fine.

Re: GPS

I understand Mark,

My current objective is to determine whether I can operate this unit in the field with a short cable (of course). I'd prefer to mount the GPS receiver to the top of the Pi so keep everything close and tidy. My rig already has enough cables without adding to the cable mess.

But for a home station with a Pi running as the station computer, right on.

Re: GPS

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

If you are using the little dongle GPS, then an extension cable will probably help.? The GPS antenna must have a clear view of the sky to have a reasonable signal strength.? In addition, the farther it can be placed from the noise of a USB port, the better the s/n will be.? USB 3.0 ports are the worst offenders.? Use an extension cable and pot that GPS antenna in a window where it can see the sky, or try one of these:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B086ZK6R89/

It has a long cable, and a magnet on the bottom so it stays put on a magnetic (steel) surface.? I have used this model on my pc's for several years continuously 24/7 for timekeeping with no problems.? They are available on amazon from at least 2 suppliers.

Re: Help - Hot Spot not working

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Well, I¡¯m out in the boondocks and I fired it up. Saw and connected to it. Rebooted and never saw it a again. When I return to broadband, I make a new build and install just HotSpot tools first, then test it. I¡¯m going to set up the connection for to WiFi to an access point I can easily shut off rather then my 6 node mesh network.?

?More investigation...
I have a Pi 4 also with BAP and when I ran Hotspot Tools on it, it showed an SSID and Password, and it works just fine.
I poked around a bit, and found /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
In this file, I can see ssid and wpa_passphrase that match what I saw in Hotspot Tools.

So back to my other Pi, which happens to be a Pi 3 but I don't think this matters.
When I open /etc, there is NO hostapd directory in it.

I notice other differences.?

On the Pi 4, when I select Undo Force Hotspot, the Pi 4 switches back to the LAN just fine.
On the Pi 3, when I select Undo Force Hotspot, I must reboot before it switches back to the LAN.

On the Pi 4, I have Hamradio > Hotspot Tools in the menu.?
On the Pi 3, I have Other > Hotspot Tools in the menu.

I would surmise that I need to restore some pieces in the Pi 3 including getting hostapd restored.? What is the best way to do this, short of reformatting and starting over?

RTC

Edited

I have a couple different styles of RTC boards but none of them have the right pin order to plug into a Pi 4.
The order on the PI 4 is: 3V3? SDA? SCL? Clock 0? ?GND
Does anybody make one with the right pinout or am I going ot have to kludge something in (not happening)?

Re: Help - Hot Spot not working

I am experiencing the same problems as others have related.? I am running BAP 3.0.2?
A while back, I tested this and it all worked fine so something has gone astray.
I ran?
bash ~/pi-build/diagnostic
and will email this as directed.
When I run Hotspot Tools, the SSID and PASSWORD are missing.
When I run Change Name/Password and enter a name and password, they do not appear after reboot and when I run Hotspot Tools again.? Obviously, I cannot connect to a hotspot of 10.10.10.10 without an SSID and Password.
