In rereading you response here, I may have stumbled on something
that has been happening
to me. I use an 8 inch display and stand with Pi case from
Vilross, as shown here:
I have noticed several times getting a message of low voltage and
a reboot.
I bet that is what was happening that I had the PNY drive in to
allow saving several files
I use for software I use to keep net log DB on our ARES weekly
net Current and as backup.
I believe I will use a micro SD in 32GB or a smaller one of 8GB
to keep those special files
on. I may have to get another adapter to use in the USB slot as
before but it should solve
this low power problem.

I had a couple of older 16GB PNY drives that pulled too much power
as compared to most drives (they had a rotating metal cover or
sliding plastic sheath) and would only work consistently on PCs. I
couldn't even use them for boot drives. Might be like those.
