I found a workaround, and have submitted it to Jason for his consideration.
Below is that suggestion: Hi Jason -
Continued with the past problem in that FLAMP always indicated 'NEED UPDATE', but never updated from 2.2.05 to 2.2.07.
A fix for this involved adding "| tail -1)" to the end of the AMPTAR=$ line in the FLAMP section of the 'flsuite.funtion' script.
The update went smoothly, and now, with 2.2.07 installed, the FLAMP NEEDS UPDATE message has disappeared.
Is this a valid 'fix'?

Updated to the new 3.1.0 and applied the FLMSG patch successfully. I was hoping that it would fix whatever was wrong with the error when triyng to update FLMSG also. This is the output I get in the terminal after trying to update:
