Re: Antenna

Re Superantenna MP1.? I am skeptical of the the performance of an antenna that is advertised to work from 2m to 80m. I assume you are also using some kind of "tuner."? How narrow is the antenna's bandwidth?? My experience with a manufactured antenna (that was very expensive) that was supposed to handle 6m to 160m was poor.? But then I was a radio amateur neophyte and believed the marketing hype.? I have given up childish ways.

OH8STN uses an MPAS II antenna from Chameleon when he works portable and seems to be happy with it.? It is, however, kinda pricey, I think.

My choice of antenna for portable work is an end fed half wave mono-band wire antenna.? It is cheap, it is resonant on the band and needs no tuner/matchbox.? I usually carry only one antenna, for the 20m band. But as summer progresses I also can carry antennas for 10 and 15 meter bands.? So, what weight I might save by not carrying a tuner, I may make up with carrying several antennas, as the case may be.? I have used a fiberglass telescopic fishing pole to support one end.? Very light weight, but very bendable.? I am considering purchasing a 7 meter or 10 meter telescopic mast from Spiderbeam.? The 7 meter mast is, collapsed, 71cm long and weights about 1.026 kg (about 2.3 pounds).? I don't like trees because I keep getting my wire or throw line caught in the branches and spend more time trying to get them free than doing radio.? I can also just lean the mast against a tree, and I am happy.

To round out my collection of end fed half wave antennas I do have antennas for 2m and 6m.? My supplier does not have such an antenna for 40m, unfortunately.?

I carry a Superantenna MP1 when backpacking 80M through 2M in a small bag...I also have a small generic wonderlead type whip that I use from time to time if weight is super important. If I'm going somewhere I know will be trees, then I bring an EFHW. I have resonant counterpoises for each band on a winder with all the wires going to a single connection that can be plugged into mp1 or ground of radio (you'll need these for the best signal, swr, and to alleviate RF coming back into the radio and into you).

Very interesting question; sound like to square the circle to me; i am looking forward to somebody to give you a better answer then me. However, i think you should be more specific on your needs to give us a chance ¨C what distances you like to cover, what frequencies you want to use. Even a whip has to be tuned on the band. Maybe you should look on NVIS military applications. Good luck! 73 de Uli (DD5UK)
