Just wanted to post here that I've been working with botspot?& gman to merge VARA HF into pi-apps officially. This installation should be more automatic now just by installing pi-apps and choosing VARA HF from the "Engineering" apps menu.
To update VARA HF, just uninstall and reinstall from pi-apps.

try a fresh install move to X11 get all updated and upgraded and try the manual install again .. after that add the items you want but do not try and install vara from scripts they are all wacky, and the manual method should work with good success.
