Give HF a try today even if you don't want to contest

The North America QSO Party is happening right now until 10pm Pacific time.? Yes, it's a contest, but you don't need to keep contacting folks, you don't need to upload anything, you can just get on, make some contacts, see how your rig and antenna is working.

The 'exchange' is your name and state? (AI6VX, Dave in Calif).? ?That's it.? No worries about thinking of what to say.

15M was pretty good and 20M is hopping.??

Give it a try!

Dave AI6VX

Re: North American QSO Party - SSB

If the frequency is busy, check 5 Khz below or above as we may have moved there, or check your email as I will try to email the Groups.io list with our new frequency

To help with coordination, please tune to 147.515 Mhz simplex! This will allow us to let each other know if we moved to another frequency, or if band conditions are poor and we want to try a different band.

A cool aspect of this contest is that we can enter as a team, even while operating from our own homes. If you would like to be on the Ventura County ARC team, please let me know by EOD Friday, which is when I will be registering.
?
The exchange is first name and state/province for US and Canadian stations; first name and DXCC prefix for other North American entities (example: Puerto Rican stations should send "KP4"); first name and "DX" for stations outside of North America.
?
If you have any questions about the contest, logging, the exchange, what bands and when, etc., please feel free to message me.
?
There are (almost) no requirements to participate. Whether you make 1 contact or 100? it doesn't matter, all that matters is you have some fun!
?
I'll be putting in a very half-hearted effort, maybe an hour or two max. I only ask that if you do decide to join the VCARC team, that you submit an official log to the organizers at the end of the contest.
?
Hopefully you'll join the team and I'll hear you on the air on Saturday!

questions for Clem re Steppir antenna

Clem -
You said in your talk that the receive noise floor is very low.?
To what do you attribute this??
- directionality (horizontal and vertical)
- height above ground and house
- narrow bandwidth or Q of antenna
- something else?

¦ÌField Day this Sunday

¦ÌField Day is happening again, January 19th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, at
the usual spot (details below). A VERY special thanks to Ventura County
Fire Department; I had asked for the date but given all the fires, did
not expect it to be available.

If ever there was a time to make sure your portable gear is in order,
this is it! And if you don't have a portable setup, you need to come and
see what other people are doing-it doesn't have to be complex or expensive.

The weather prediction is for 4 mph winds-nice! It'll be a great chance
to feel a bit guilty about our winter weather too-sunny and 60 degrees.
Plus, everyone who attends has a good time-if you never have, now's the
time! Everyone is welcome, hams, non-hams, etc.

Same location, at the Ventura County Fire Department¡¯s training ground
at Camarillo Airport. This is at the east end of Durley avenue, and I¡¯ll
have some signs there. Or set your nav to 34.2084, -119.0722. 11:00 am
to 3:00 pm as always, and we¡¯ll have water and some shade on hand; bring
your own lunch, radio, etc.

Host needed for 10M Net today

Unfortunately I am running behind on getting the house ready for the next series of winds that are coming through. What I have learned from the previous events is that WeatherUnderground underestimates what I will receive wind wise.? Windy.com is better, especially the HRRR model.? This next batch of winds are supposed to be more Santa Ana like which affects inland Ventura more, which is where my QTH is.

I need to get some more stuff done while there is daylight which means I have decided I cannot host the 10M net today.

Pedro, K6MIL, Robert KM6RSS usually have a pretty good signal as does Chester K1GKM.? Not sure if any of you are available to take the net.

Regardless, folks should get on 10M and see how the conditions are, and chat with folks that answer.? Don't be afraid to call out CQ.

Sorry everyone,
Dave AI6VX

Get on the air and see who you can hear!? A good way for Technicians to participate on HF as they are allowed a small slice of 10M.

Edit: Moved time to 4pm (0000 UTC) so we are not in the last hour of various contests through the year.
