I uploaded to our files section a document I received with good information on preparing before, during and after a wildfire.? It was put together by the LA County Fire Dept.

This weekend is the NAQP CW contest, from 10:00am to 10:00pm on Saturday. One of the cool things about the NAQP is that you can enter as a team, without having to operate from the same location.
?
I know we have some members who do CW, and if anyone would like to join me in a K6MEP team, please let me know by end of (work) day Friday so I can register. If you decide to participate in the team, I'll ask that you do submit a log to the contest organizers at the end of the contest.
?
There is no proficiency requirement to join, ops at all points in their CW journey are welcome! Whether you make 1 contact or 100, I'd love to have you participate. Contesting is a great way to practice your copying on a known (and short) exchange.
?
The exchange will be first name and state abbreviation. If anyone wants to join but needs help setting up a logger or anything else, let me know. General info on the contest can be found .

Next weekend, Saturday the 18th, is the SSB portion of the NAQP. I will be forming a team for that as well, and will send another email next week.

Hope some of you will join me in the fun!

Pres Says - January 2025

Borrowing a line from a long running soap opera - ¡°Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives¡±

?

Welcome to 2025! Another trip around the Sun, the holidays are behind us, and wind and fire warnings seem to have replaced our rains.? As I am typing this we are on day 1 of 2 days of a ¡°Life-Threatening & Destructive Windstorm!!!¡± (exclamation points from NOAA)? On the upside, the days are finally getting longer. I hope you all are safe, have power, and are not impacted by this windstorm.

Decemberfest was great!? I hope you all enjoyed getting together as much as I did.? Great conversations, good food, nice gifts, fantastic decorations, and trivia!? We are already reserving the location for next year (thank you Robert) and will use the next 350+ days to address some of the short comings we experienced.? Do you have any input you¡¯d like to give us on the event?? Please let us know.? Better yet, help us plan Decemberfest 2025!? We would appreciate the extra help.

Speaking of the next 350+ days, here¡¯s what we've been working on.? Robert KM6RSS has been lining up presenters for our monthly meetings, and we have been filling in the calendar with our usual club events - Field Day, picnics, VE sessions, Church clean-up days, etc.?

Nets!? We currently have 3 weekly nets and those will continue in 2025 but with 2 changes:

  • The Wednesday 40M net will change to 80M due to conditions this time of year.? With the time change and season, 40M falls apart just before the start.? More info on the change will be sent out over Groups.io in the next week or so.

  • The Monday Night Net contest will reward those that HOST the net.? Each time someone hosts the Monday Night Net, they will receive 3 raffle tickets, maximum of 6 per calendar month, that can be used towards the raffle prize at ANY future club meeting in 2025.? You must be present to enter the raffle, and elected club officers are not eligible. Interested?? There will be a signup sheet at each monthly club meeting OR you can use the online request form on our website here:

?
Is there anything you would you like to see or add?? Is there anything that you could lead? We want to make sure this club is relevant to YOU so please let us know!

?

Upcoming Events:

  • Jan 10th Friday 7pm - Monthly club meeting - Presentation by Clement KM6OKZ who will talk about his antenna tower project.

  • Jan 18th Saturday 8:30am - VE session

  • Jan 25th Saturday 9:00AM - Church Clean-Up - this will mostly be yard work.? Come in your work clothes, bring gloves, and let¡¯s give back to Grace Lutheran for their generosity in allowing us to meet at their facility.

  • Jan 25th and 26th - Winter Field Day - We are not doing anything official through the club, however it¡¯s a great way for you to test your radios and antennas by making short QSO¡¯s with folks near and far.? Details can be found at

Thank you for time and attention and I hope to see you at our January 10th club meeting!

January Message from the VP Robert KM6RSS

Edited

?

Happy New Year 2025!

?

As your club Vice President, I will focus on program planning, as well as supporting our President, Dave AI6VX.

?

My first action is to obtain great speakers and topics for our monthly meetings. I have used our groups.io website to reach out to everyone with a poll, asking for volunteers to present. I have also contacted local hams (and YouTubers) directly, who have expertise in technical subjects. Finally, I have contacted various ham-related businesses who have or might want to provide our group with important information.

?

Members Clement Alberts KM6OKZ, Tim Tenopir KN6JGB, Dave Schmidt AI6VX , Geoffrey Dann N3CFX, Paul Strauss WD6EBY and John Kitchens NS6X have already volunteered to present, as well as YouTuber Stu AG6AG and businessman (antenna engineer) Ed Fong WB6IQN. Additionally, Cory Gibson of DX Engineering is working with me to schedule a time at our 10/10/25 meeting to present NVIS. He is located in the Eastern Standard Time Zone.

?

Thanks to all who attended our wonderful 2024 December¡¯s DecemberFest party; we had 54 members and their guests enjoy a gala evening of food, entertainment and camaraderie at the Black Bear Diner in Ventura. Valerie Templin KO6EVC, along with President Dave AI6VX, organized the night¡¯s activities which included the gift collection, wrapping and distribution. Robert (KM6RSS) and Linda Shank "set the tables" and decorated the room. Denney N6HV, (assisted by Mark Leach KN6FWH), was a great quiz master as he attempted to stump everyone with humorous ham-related questions. Jeremy Climer KN6JMD, created the ¡°VCARC 2024¡± slide show. Certificates of Appreciation were given to Jacques Behar, Jeremy Climer, Phil Cohen, Dave Schmidt, Linda Shank, Robert Shank, Tim Tenopir and Mark Thompson. We also acknowledged our incoming officers and board members; many who have continued on in their previous positions for years. Additional thanks to Denney and others for taking photos and keeping everyone in fine spirit.

?

See you all at the Friday the 10th club meeting at the Grace Lutheran Church 6190 Telephone Rd. Ventura CA 93003 where Clement Alberts KM6OKZ will present his "tower story". Please bring your ideas, energy and New Year¡¯s resolutions!

?

Ventura Marathon 2025

Happy New Year to all.? The Ventura Marathon is scheduled for Sunday February 23rd and as we have done in the past, we will be providing communication service for the event.? Hopefully, the weather will be dry.? This is an initial call for volunteers including aid station radio operators, SAG drivers, and cyclists.? These events are a lot of fun and a great way to take your gear out into the field.? If you have not worked a marathon previously we will get you paired up with a marathon veteran.

?

The route has been determined and is posted on the Ventura Marathon website.? Here is a link to the route for the full marathon

?

?

The aid station locations have been determined as well and a spreadsheet with those locations is attached.? If you click on the blue link (¡°Pin on Map¡±) for any location, the location will be displayed on Google Maps.

?

If you would like to volunteer to work the event please send me an email directly to bjauerbach@... with your contact information (email address, cell phone, and T-shirt size).? If you have a preference as to a specific location you¡¯d like to work please let me know and I¡¯ll do my best to honor the request.? Similarly, if you¡¯d like to work w/ another individual let me know and I¡¯ll pair you up.

?

Race management has also requested ¡°Early Bird¡± operators at Aid stations Alpha to Juliet (one at each station) to watch over supplies (and hopefully prevent pilferage) which will be dropped off prior to the arrival of their volunteers.?? As in the past, the reward for Early Bird service will be an official race sweatshirt and a $50 gift certificate at a local restaurant. ?So if you¡¯re interested please let me know.

?

Thanks in advance for your participation and if you have any questions please feel free to either email me or call me at 805-559-9314
