National Preparedness Month: Have a Go Kit

开云体育

September is National Preparedness Month, and ARRL is working to help radio amateurs have a plan for family resilience. Many hams enjoy public service as part of their operating. Being ready to activate for a served agency through the ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Service? (ARES?) involves not only being licensed and trained, but also prepared and equipped.

The Collins ARC Drive Home Net is moving back to 441.875, PLUS, PL=131.8, Tuesdays, 5:30pm

Hi from the Collins ARC Drive Home Net ---

We're writing to let you know that the Net is moving back to its original repeater at Collins Aerospace in Richardson, effective Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024.

The Collins ARC N5CXX 70 repeater is on 441.875 MHz, Plus Offset, PL=131.8 Hz

The Collins ARC Drive Home Net operates on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Tuesdays of each month with exceptions in November and December, from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. CT.

We hope you'll join us on a regular basis and participate in ham talk. We have a new repeater in service with twice the power of the old repeater, as well as, a new antenna. The antenna will probably be upgraded in the not too distant future to give us additional gain and coverage.

The new Icom repeater is a dual mode 70cm repeater which allows for FM analog and D-STAR. We anticipate being able to begin testing local coverage using D-STAR, and, hopefully, sometime next year be connected into the world-wide D-STAR network. We'll be announcing on the Drive Home Net and on our Club website (n5cxx.us <>) when we plan to start testing D-STAR. If you're equipped for D-STAR, we hope you'll participate in these tests.

Hope to see you Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

We sincerely thank the Garland Amateur Radio Club for use of their 70cm repeater for the past year for hosting our Net while our repeater and antenna were being replaced. This is an example of the true spirit of amateur radio.

73, the Collins ARC Repeater Team

The Collins ARC of Richardson invites you to join our meeting for AMSAT News on Tues. Aug. 27th

Join us on Tuesday, August 27th, at 5:30 p.m. for the monthly meeting of the Collins Amateur Radio Club to be held at Woodcreek Church, 3400 E. Renner Rd, Richardson. The meeting will, also, be streamed via Zoom. Login instructions are available on the Club’s website, n5cxx.us.

Following a brief business meeting, Jonathan Brandenburg, KF5IDY, Assistant Vice President of Engineering, will present a program entitled "A conversation on current and future AMSAT engineering projects”.

AMSAT has over fifty years of experience building and launching spacecraft for the amateur radio community. As technologies evolve, AMSAT has taken advantage of advancing technologies and standards to launch CubeSat missions and use commercial, off-the-shelf components. This rich history continues today as AMSAT engineers diligently work on multiple exciting projects to advance AMSAT’s vision and mission to deploy amateur radio satellite systems.

These projects range from the ambitious GOLF-Tee satellite, to the more immediate Fox-Plus satellites, and on to research and development projects to develop new technologies for both current and future missions. With these projects, AMSAT’s goals include progress to highly elliptical orbits, a steady supply of low earth orbit payloads, and early-stage research into thrust and deorbit options for AMSAT spacecraft.

Please come to this presentation prepared to ask questions about the various aspects of AMSAT’s engineering efforts that interest you.

Jonathan Brandenburg was raised in the small town of Ralston, Oklahoma graduating high school from Ralston Public High School boasting a graduating class of thirteen students before completing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science at Oklahoma State University. But a long-standing interest in space later led him to obtain a Masters in Space Studies from University of North Dakota when distance learning consisted of shipping VHS tape recordings of the previous semesters’ classes.

Professionally, he looks back on a varied sequence of positions in document and records management consulting, an adjunct professor teaching introductory computer science and biotechnical engineering, and the occasional attempt at being an IT corporate executive.

Today, Jonathan spends his days working with NASA and commercial clients to develop systems and flight software for space stations and commercial customers. As you might imagine, this is his dream job!

As a former private pilot, a former SCUBA diver, and current amateur radio operator you see he has a history of expensive and time-consuming hobbies and today you find him volunteering with AMSAT engineering. As a recent Assistant Vice President of Engineering at AMSAT, Jonathan kicked off the Fox-Plus program and expanded the research-and-development-oriented ASCENT projects.

Last Night's PARK auction

WOW! What a Night!

?

Thank you everyone who came out and joined the fun, especially those who were instrumental in organizing, obtaining items to be auctioned, setting up and “working” the auction.? With out everyone’s efforts we wouldn’t have been able to pull off another successful auction.

?

While there were a few items that did not sell, the vast majority of the private sell, donated, and free stuff went off to new homes!

?

I don’t have a final tally of the proceeds but I can honestly predict that that number will exceed all expectations.

?

Thank you again, and let’s look forward to a bigger and better auction next year.

WHEN & WHERE

Monday, July 15 at 7:00pm.
First United Methodist Church of Plano
3160 East Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, TX

This was a big hit last year, and we look forward to it being even bigger this year.

Check your garage, closet, ham radio shelves, wherever you keep gear you haven't used in a long while.

There will be three sets of tables where you can:

A – DONATE it to the club.
The club auctions it. The proceeds benefit the club. Everything needs your call sign on it, because if no one bids, you still take it home.

B – KEEP ownership.
Put a starting price on the item. Let the club try to auction it. If it sells, 10% of the sale price goes to the club. If it does not sell, you take it home.

C- GIVE it away free to any interested ham to take put it back into use.
A box of tubes, spool of wire, antenna pieces, radio interfaces, etc. This can be snapped up at any time so come early to get a shot at all the freebees.
Everything needs your call sign on it, because of no one takes it, you still take it home.

Because we had SO much gear come in last year,
1 — We will be prioritizing what we auction – which means picking and choosing, not everything may be called for auction.
2 — YOU Label ALL ITEMS with your call sign. If it doesn’t sell, you take it back home with you.
3 — Ham-related gear please.
4 — Let our VP know if you have a noteworthy item you will bring to the auction so we can publicize it. That helps draw bidders.? (VP@...)
5 — Anything not auctioned or given away at the end of the night, is open to a person-to-person sale.

Remember — ANY item you bring that does not sell, or freebee not taken, you must take it home.

Write out an index card for each of your items, with some information about them, what it does, operational condition, how it’s used, or if the transceiver has additional filters installed, etc. This saves us time, provides more information to the bidder, and can increase the winning price.

THE PROCESS:

Every bidder comes in and signs a log to be assigned a bidder number / Index Card.
So we can call out the winning bidder number, and keep track of won items.

Every item is given or has an Item Card with the item's model number / description.
The Auctioneer will use these Item Cards for any description or specifics about the item being auctioned.
When won, the Auctioneer’s Assistant writes the winning bidder’s number and price on the Item Card.

When an item is bid on and won, it is moved to a “Completed” table.
Our “Runner” takes the Item Card to the club Treasurer for payment.

Bidders can keep bidding on various items and make a single payment at the end.
Payments to the klub can be made with cash or PayPal.

When paid for, the Treasurer stamps Item Card(s) as sold.
The stamped Item Cards must be presented to the Runner or Runner's Assistant to pick up the item from the Completed table.

In order to get the deals, you need to be here in person.
