ISS to Transmit SSTV April 11-13 to Celebrate Cosmonautics Day
Didn't get enough SSTV last week? The International Space Station will be transmitting special Slow Scan Television (SSTV) images to celebrate Cosmonautics Day, which honors Yuri Gagarin's historic first spaceflight on April 12, 1961. The SSTV event is organized by ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) and will run from April 11 through the weekend. A total of 12 images will be broadcast in PD120 mode on the standard downlink frequency of 145.800 MHz FM. Enthusiasts around the world can receive these images using a VHF radio or SDR, along with SSTV decoding software such as MMSSTV, RX-SSTV, or Robot36. This is a great opportunity for amateur radio operators and space fans alike to collect commemorative images directly from orbit. Be sure to check ISS pass times for your location so you don’t miss the transmissions. (ANS thanks ARISS for the above information) Simple 2m 3-el Kent Britain Cheap Yagi works well. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ARISS Contact is Scheduled with Students at Lakeside Junior High School, Springdale, Arkansas, USA March 29, 2025—Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has received schedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and students at the Lakeside Junior High School located in Springdale, AR, USA. ARISS conducts 60-100 of these special amateur radio contacts each year between students around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. Lakeside Jr. High School serves 8th and 9th graders and Sonora Elementary serves students in Kindergarten through 5th grade, both are in the Springdale School District. Both Schools serve about 600 kids and the school district itself has more than 20,000 students. The students leading this ARISS contact are in a program called EAST, Education Accelerated by Service and Technology. EAST allows students to explore their passions paired with technology and community service. Students have 3D-mapped caves, created weather apps, made videos, and 3d-printed a prosthetic leg. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions of astronaut Nichole Ayers, amateur radio call sign KJ5GWI. The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard by listeners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relay ground station. The amateur radio ground station for this contact is in Springdale, AR. Amateur radio operators using call sign KJ5ANC, will operate the ground station to establish and maintain the ISS connection. What was one part of living on the ISS that astronaut training could never fully prepare you for? 4. What is a spacewalk like? 5. How does being in space influence creativity, and have you or your fellow astronauts engaged in any artistic activities, like drawing, music, or storytelling? 6. What will you do when you return to Earth? 7. Can you describe a time when you had to solve an unexpected problem on the ISS using creativity and teamwork? 8. Have you seen or heard anything weird and/or unexplainable in space? 9. How does being in space and working closely with an international crew affect the way you view the world? 10. ARLB002 Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act Re-Introduced
SB QST @ ARL $ARLB002 ARLB002 Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act Re-Introduced ZCZC AG02 QST de W1AW ARRL Bulletin 2 ARLB002 From ARRL Headquarters Newington CT February 7, 2025 To all radio amateurs SB QST ARL ARLB002 ARLB002 Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act Re-Introduced Legislation Will Increase Communication Options During Natural Disasters WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Representatives August Pfluger, R-Tex., and Joe Courtney, D-Conn. announced their joint re-introduction of legislation in the Senate and House to restore the right to amateur radio operators to install the antennas necessary to serve their communities. Homeowner association rules often prevent Amateur Radio operators from installing antennas at their homes even though amateur radio has proven to be essential in emergencies and natural disasters such as hurricanes when other means of communication fail. "Mississippians should have access to every possible means of warning for natural disasters, including amateur radio operators. In an emergency, those warnings can mean the difference between life and death," Senator Wicker said. "The Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act would remove unnecessary roadblocks that could help keep communities safe during emergencies like tornadoes, hurricanes, and fires." "When disaster strikes, amateur radio operators provide vital, often life-saving information, which shouldn't be hindered by prohibitive rules or confusing approval processes. The Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act eliminates obstacles for ham radio enthusiasts, allowing them to continue their communications and serve their communities in the face of emergencies," said Senator Blumenthal. "Natural disasters and other emergency situations that hinder our regular lines of communication are unfortunately unavoidable, which is why we must bolster our emergency preparedness by removing the barriers amateur radio operators often run into when installing antennas. Amateur radio plays a vital role in public safety by delivering critical information to people at all times. My district is home to dozens of amateur radio operators ready to volunteer in the event of an emergency, and I am proud to lead this legislation," said Congressman August Pfluger. "As we know from recent natural disasters, amateur radio operators in Connecticut can be a critical component of disaster response and emergency management. It is in our communities' best interest that we give them the capabilities to operate at the highest level, and with the re-introduction of this bill, we've taken a strong step in that direction," said Congressman Courtney. Background: The Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act of 2025 (H.R. 1094 and S. 459) would require homeowner associations to accommodate the needs of FCC-licensed Amateur Radio operators by prohibiting the enforcement of private land use restrictions that ban, prevent, or require the approval of the installation or use of amateur radio station antennas. Homeowner associations have often prevented installation and use of such antennas through private land use restrictions. This has hindered voluntary training for emergency situations and blocked access to necessary communications when disaster strikes. Among other provisions, this legislation would: * Prohibit homeowner association rules that would prevent or ban amateur radio antennas * Specify an approval process for installing amateur radio antennas * Provide a Federal private right of action to amateur radio operators in disputed cases On behalf of America's Amateur Radio licensees, Rick Roderick, the President of The American Radio Relay League, re-confirmed the ARRL's full support for the passage of the Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act of 2025 and extended his thanks and appreciation to Senators Wicker and Blumenthal and Congressmen Pfluger and Courtney for their unflagging leadership of the bi-partisan effort to support and protect the rights of all amateur radio operators. Radio repair needed...
3
Hi all, I missed the 'Hands On' meeting this past Saturday but I have a radio that needs repair and amplifier that I think also needs repair. (I need to do more testing on this.) They are a Drake TR-22C that I think the receiver has gone to left field and a Drake AA-10 1w in 10w out amplifier that seems to only output 4-5 watts. Does anyone in the club have any experience with these repairs or know of someone or a ham radio repair company that I can contact. I have some 2m non-CTCSS radios from when I and my father were new hams in the 70's, and I am thinking about finally putting these up for sale, but I don't want to sell a nonfunctioning radio. Any help or direction would be appreciated. Tony... WB8ZWI
