? ARRL 10-Meter Contest - Join the Fun This Weekend! ?
The ARRL 10-Meter Contest is happening this weekend, and it’s a great opportunity to test your skills, make global contacts, and enjoy some friendly competition on the 10-meter band!
Here are the details: ? Dates: December 9–10, 2024 ? Time: Starts at 0000 UTC on Saturday and runs for 48 hours. ? Rules & Info: Visit
The 10-meter band has been alive with activity lately, thanks to favorable propagation conditions during this solar cycle. Whether you’re new to contesting or a seasoned operator, there’s no better time to jump in and have fun.
Let us know if you’re planning to participate and share your setup or strategy! Looking forward to hearing your experiences and maybe catching you on the air.
I am posting this notice on groups IO because as I understand Dave K5JOI SK had been active with the Garland amateur radio club in the past. He had been a ham for a good long while and had some interesting equipment some of you might interested in looking at.
Rocky, Bullwinkle, and Boris are all out playing around White Rock Lake. Rocky's call is at 146.565, Bullwinkle is at 146.545, and Boris is at 146.580.
All foxes will be coming out after 5PM Sunday.
As a note, when you find Rocky and Boris, you need to look at the back of their cards to get the coordinates for "near" where Bullwinkle can be heard. Rocky has the latitude coordinates and Boris has the longitude coordinates. Put the two together, find the spot on the map, and when you go there you should hear Bullwinkle. From that point you will need to navigate through radio direction finding to the exact location.
Good Luck! Hope you have as much fun finding them as we had putting them together and getting them out there.

I am still looking for radio operators to help support the YMCA's Turkey Trot event on Thanksgiving Day. I've you've been on the fence, not sure about your plans, or whatever else please, please PLEASE, go to and sign up now. We need you. As of this morning I still?have 10 positions open.
If you've never heard of the Turkey Trot before (I'm surprised!) it is the Dallas YMCA's largest fundraising event with over 50 years of tradition?behind it. You can get an overview of the event from?
?
If you're wondering what you would do at the event as a radio operator, we have a number of different?positions available. The main thing we do is relay messages (in real time) between different areas of the race. There the start and finish lines are separated by a block or two, and there are water stops along the route. If you are athletic that is very helpful but it is not required. A number of the roles will work just fine for people with limited mobility.?
?
If you've never done a public service event before - that is just fine. The?Turkey?Trot is a good "first time" event.? It is also good practice for radio operators planning to work the Dallas Marathon next month.
?
If you can't come out yourself, you can still help support the event by spreading the word through your local nets, club meetings, email lists, etc.? All you need to say is "Go to W5FC.org and look at the top of the page". The signup is right there. Anything you do to get the word out will be appreciated.?

Hi, my name Richard Sander, son of Dick Sander (K5QY). Sadly, he and mom passed earlier this year and have left a home in Murphy Texas with 5 or more towers. One 90’ fold over tower, 4 about 30’ towers and misc. receiving assemblies. I am looking for a trade consisting of the removal of the towers which can be kept, along with his miscellaneous Ham gear (minimalized list below). FlexRadio 6400M, Ameritron ALS-606, Ameritron 1200 ICom IC-3220A Other Misc. radio, amp, and Ham items, and some 3-4 of sections of aluminum tower for fast field set-up.
I'm working on reaching out to multiple Ham clubs. Please help share this with serious Ham operators.
If interested, please call me at 214-641-0662. Thank you
Richard

A couple updates you may find helpful:
The kv4p HT app should be out of beta before the end of October, and you won't need an invite. It will just show up in the Play Store on Android phones for you to easily install. The beta is required to get approval for Google to list the app publicly, and we're almost done with the beta. If you join the beta, you'll continue to get new versions before everyone else (which might have some issues, but also lots of cool new stuff!)
The best version of kv4p HT to build right now, is the v1.5 PCB (the only one linked on the Quick Start page on , so if you use that you're good). The harmonic suppression on v1.5 is marginal and just barely compliant with US FCC requirements. It's your responsibility to ensure it meets the harmonic suppression requirements of your country and amateur radio license. Me and the community are working on a much better PCB version right now, and should have v1.7 available in 1-2 weeks. If you can wait for that version, I recommend it.
I'll get to you soon, once your beta access is granted!

Clarification to Use of Winlink During Natural Disaster in Southeast
Thanks to John Galvin, N5TIM, we have received a clarification to the official announcement posted on the Winlink website regarding limiting use of Winlink during the severe hurricane activity in the southeast:
Per Tom, N5TW, Winlink Development Team, here is a clarification;
Telnet and local VHF/UHF traffic that goes through the CMS will not interfere with HF Winlink traffic and is fine.

I wanted to share some useful information for monitoring the Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) during hurricane season. ? The HWN provides critical updates and coordination for emergency communication.
You can monitor the net on the following frequencies:
14.325 MHz

If you don't have HF capability at home or mobile, you can still listen in through the WebSDR platform at the following link:
This is a great way to stay informed about ongoing weather events and to hear real-time reports from amateur radio operators in affected areas.
Stay safe ,prayers for Florida?

ARISS Slow Scan TV Transmissions Begin Tuesday October 8th
ARISS is planning a Slow Scan Television (SSTV) experiment from the International Space Station, scheduled to start on Tuesday, October 8, at 16:00 GMT and running until Monday, October 14, at 14:10 GM
There will be an interruption on Friday, October 11, for planned school contacts over Europe.
?The transmission frequency will be 145.800 MHz FM, using SSTV mode?PD120. The ISS callsign will be?RS0ISS.
?The SSTV transmissions will be made using the station in the Russian ISS Service Module. The equipment used is a Kenwood?D710?transceiver running about 25 watts output which provides a very strong signal enabling reception using simple equipment. Images received by amateurs world-wide during previous transmissions can be seen at http://www.spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV.
?Amateurs can receive the SSTV pictures directly from the space station by connecting the audio output of their two-meter transceiver via a simple interface to the soundcard on a Windows PC or an Apple iOS device. On Windows PC’s the free application?MMSSTV?can be used to decode the signal, on Apple iOS devices you can use the SSTV app for compatible modes. For Linux systems try?QSSTV.
?The ISS puts out a strong signal so even a?2M?handheld with a 1/4 wave antenna will be enough to receive it but one's chances of success are significantly improved with the use of a handheld beam antenna. The FM transmission uses 5 kHz deviation which is standard in much of the world. Many FM rigs can be switched been wide and narrow deviation FM filters. For best results you should select the filter for wider deviation FM. Handhelds all seem to have a single wide filter fitted as standard. [It's also useful to open the squelch before the pass begins to capture the weak part of the signal during the satellite rise.]
?Reports are requested: please send ARISS uploading your decoded pictures in the official ARISS SSTV gallery: https://www.spaceflightsoftware.com/ARISS_SSTV/ ?Useful information to receive the pictures can be found here at?https://amsat-uk.org/beginners/iss-sstv/ ?Follow ARISS on X for official updates during the event?https://x.com/ARISS_Intl.
?[ANS thanks ARISS and AMSAT-UK for the above information.] ?
