SCARA Winter Field Day
Winter Field Day ¨C January 25 ¡° The goal of the Winter Field Day Association is to help amateur radio operators improve their preparedness for disasters and enhance their operational abilities. The winter months present unique challenges for operating, including shorter days, the potential for freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and other hazards. Our annual Winter Field Day Exercise is not a contest but a practical field exercise designed to push your emergency preparedness skills to the limit and test your capabilities in diverse and demanding conditions. By setting up a station away from the comforts of home, you can significantly enhance your readiness for disasters and improve your operating skills in challenging environments.¡± We are planning to set up 2 stations at the Fire Training Center. Since the event starts at 11 AM Saturday, we are planning to start setting up 2 hours before that, e.i. 9 AM. If you have an antenna you want to set up for us to use that would be great. It can be a total experiment on your part. A Quad, Dipole, End Fed or whatever you want to dream up. Bring it along with your ideas. This is a 30 hour event, however we do not have plans for operating overnight, and Sunday operation will depend upon operators committing to come. Please let us know your plans. If you have questions, ideas or are willing to commit some time operating, please let me know, KG2H@....

Fire at Brian and Susan Szewczyk's home - no injuries
3
Hi all: In case you haven¡¯t heard from other sources, there was a fire yesterday at Brian Szewczyk (NJ1F) home, causing a lot of damage. Both he and his wife Susan (K1RQ) are fine (and so are their pets.) Brian and Susan are in staying in a hotel for the time being. At this time, it's unclear what kind of support Brian and Susan may need following the fire. For now, please keep them in your thoughts. Wireless On-air activities this weekend
Happy New Year This first weekend of the new year has a several Radio Sport and On Air activities to partake in. First off ARRL Kids Day. While not really a contest or radio sport is it an event that encourages you to promote our hobby to youth. Share your hobby with your Kids, Grandkids, Church group, Scout, friends children etc. Complete details are at https://www.arrl.org/kids-day Remember to review the FCC rules on ¡°Third Party Traffic¡± as current band conditions are favorable for DX contacts. The ARRL RTTY Roundup is happening starting at 18:00 GMT (1 pm local) Saturday January 4 thru 23:59 GMT (6:59 pm local) January 5 Never tried RTTY? The ARRL RTTY Roundup offers a great playing field to learn a new mode. Chances are that you are already doing FT modes so shifting to RTTY is most likely setting up your digital software to do RTTY. Contest logging software like N1MM (free) supports the ARRL RTTY RU has the MMTTY engine as well as FLDIGI integrated. A good website for RTTY operating tips is https://www.rttycontesting.com/ Here is a link to a presentation on RTTY contesting that was given at a Yankee Clipper Contest Club meeting by Ed Muns W0YK https://youtu.be/rFEhovOClmY?si=f2UACaRR2Ci31f27 So basically, Amateurs worldwide contact and exchange QSO information with other amateurs using only the Radioteletype (RTTY) mode on the 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meter bands. Any station may work any other station. Stations may be worked once per band, regardless of mode. Automated operation is not permitted, each claimed contact must include contemporaneous direct initiation by the operator on both sides of the contact. The Exchange for US stations is our state, VE stations their providence and DX stations will give a serial number. This is a typical contest contact: CQing Station: CQ RU DE NJ1F Answering Station: W1UE CQer: W1UE 599 NY Answer: 599 MA CQer: TU RU DE NJ1F Calling a station DX CQ looks like this CQing Station: CQ RU DE SP9KR Answering Station: NJ1F CQer: NJ1F 599 231 Answer: 599 NY CQer: TU QRZ SP9KR You can operate a max of 24 hours out of the 30 hour contest period. Complete rules at http://www.arrl.org/rtty-roundup Band conditions have be fantastic to really bad. There are several very active sunspot regions facing Earth that have sent CME¡¯s and solar flares which have wreaked havoc with the bands. Space Weather is predicting a glancing hit of a CME this weekend https://www.spaceweather.com/ . THE NEXT STORM IS COMING: NOAA forecasters have issued a G1-class geomagnetic storm watch for Jan. 4th and 5th when a CME and a stream of solar wind are expected to graze Earth's magnetic field. This should be a relatively minor event, much less intense than the severe G4-class storm of Jan. 1st. Nevertheless, high-latitude sky watchers (especially near the Artic Circle) could get a good show if the storm materializes Hey the next Club meeting on Monday January 13th will feature Fred K2TR interactively sharing his years of experience of HF and VHF propagation, answering questions and sharing propagation sites / tools. A friend W1VE will be operating in the ARRL RTTY Roundup as 7Q2T (Malawi) doing single band 10 meters. Tip I worked him during the recent ARRL 10 meter contest at 18:30 GMT with 100 watts and a dipole, so that would be a good time to look for him on Saturday or Sunday. Hope you get on your wireless set this weekend. 73 Brian NJ1F

This weekend's Radio Sport ARRL 10 Meter
With the solar cycle peaking this weekend¡¯s ARRL 10 meter contest should offer an awesome opportunity to work DX, and experience worldwide HF propagation. Guess what Technicians licensees can get in on the act with their SSB privileges between 28.300 to 28.500. The contest started Friday evening at 7 pm local and runs until Sunday 6:59 pm local. As the name implies it takes place on the ten meter band and is a dual mode contest. Meaning that both CW and SSB can be used to make contacts during the contest period. You can work a maximum of 36 hours of the 48 hour period. The exchange for US stations, Canadian and Mexican stations is signal report and their state or providence. DX stations will send a signal report and serial number. Here is a link where you can find the list of states and providences: https://contests.arrl.org/contestmultipliers.php A typical exchange CQing: CQ test de NJ1F Answering: DM9EE CQing: DM9EE 5nn NY Answering: 5NN 175 Cqing: TU QRZ NJ1F One unique feature of this contest is that you can work the same station twice during the period, once on CW and once on SSB Propagation on ten meters can be wild, generally following the progress of the sun around the earth. The band will be open during daylight hours however it can offer some unusual openings in the middle of the night thanks to the current solar conditions. So expect that in the morning the signals will be coming from the east. So morning will feature an opening towards Europe and Africa. However some Caribbean and South American may be workable. As midday approaches the opening will tend to shift towards the south and then in the afternoon begin to open to the Pacific and Asisa. Also you don¡¯t need to have a beam to work DX even a ham stick or retuned CB mobile antenna will work! A really cool live map of the current propagation is at https://prop.kc2g.com/ As one of my long time contesting friends says: ¡°There¡¯s no meters like 10 meters and the solar maximum!¡± Hope you get on and enjoy the DX on ten meters this weekend. 73 Brian NJ1F

Wireless activities this weekend ARRL 160
Looking for a fun and relaxing ¡°evening¡± wireless activity this weekend? Your in luck this weekend starting Friday afternoon at 22:00 z 5 PM local December 6 (just after local sunset) the ARRL 160 meter contest kicks off. It runs thru 16:00 Z on Sunday December 8 This is a great opportunity to get on ¡°Top Band¡± also know as the gentlemen¡¯s band and joy in the fun. Never been on 160 or don¡¯t have an antenna this is a great weekend to give it a try. Modern HF rigs have internal antenna tuners which will ¡°Load Up¡± a 80 meter dipole or end feed antenna on 160 and allow you to make contacts and maybe even some DX. Many years ago while living in a third floor apartment I used a random length about 60 feet of 22 gauge wire from my balcony to a tree branch. This allowed me to work stations located along the east coast, west to Colorado, and a couple of DX stations in the Caribbean This is a CW only contest and the exchange is simply a signal report and ARRL Section. ENY, Eastern New York if you are in Saratoga or Warren County. The CW Speed is slower than in the recent CQWW CW contest. A typical contact is like this CQ: CQ Test de NJ1F Caller: K1LZ CQ : K1LZ 5nn ENY Caller: 5nn ME CQ: TU QRZ NJ1F Complete rules at www.arrl.org/160-meter This contest is a good opportunity to get Worked All States on 160 meters! A couple of pointers about 160 meters: Sunrise and Sunset are truly the best opportunity to work some DX. Our sunset will yield a fantastic opportunity to work DX stations towards the east like Europe and Africa. While our Sunrise is the best opportunity for DX to the West KH6, KL7, and ZL. A friend will be on this weekend from Hawaii KH7M and he said that his local sunset is around 4:00 z 11 pm local. There might be a brief peak in his signal then, however the W6 and W7s will have a huge advantage over east coast. So I have had great success in working KH6 before our just before our local sunrise which is 7:14 local on Saturday morning. I hope that you will get on this weekend! See you on Top Band. 73 Brian NJ1F

CQWW CW this weekend
2
Looking for to take part in one of the largest amateur radio sporting event? Well this weekend you have a chance to. Starting at 7 pm local on Friday evening the HF bands will very quickly become full of CW signals from all around the world! With the current solar conditions it is possible to work DXCC in a single weekend with 100 watts and wire antennas. Contest runs from 00:00 GMT on Saturday (7 pm local Friday) until 23:59 Sunday (6:59 local Sunday evening) Unlike last weekend¡¯s ARRL SweepStakes contest the exchange is very simple in CQWW it is just a signal report and CQ zone. We are in Zone 5 So the typical exchange is CQing: CQ Test de NJ1F Calling: SN9Q CQing: SN9Q 599 5 Callling NJ1F 599 15 CQing: TU QRZ NJ1F That is a typical exchange. There are many different categories that you can enter the contest so ben sure to checkout the complete rules at https://cqww.com/rules.htm I recommend that using a computer and or memory keyer to send making the exchange go smoothly. Computer programs that support CQWW CW are N3FJP, N1MM, and many others. See you in the pileups! 73 Brian NJ1F

ON the Air Activities this Weekend
Well this weekend offers several on the air contests and operating activities. However the BIG one for us in the united states is the ARRL Sweepstakes SSB. ARRL Sweepstakes SSB is an awesome opportunity to get on HF and complete ¡°Worked All States¡± in a single weekend! One of the objectives of the contest is to get a clean sweep of all 85 W / VE Sections. A link to the list is at Contest Multipliers . If you do get a clean sweep you can purchase a coffee mug from the ARRL to commemorate your achievement. Here is what the ARRL states as the objective of November Sweepstakes: Contest Objective: To support amateur self-training in radiocommunications, including improving amateur operating skills, conducting technical investigations, and intercommunicating with other amateurs. Stations in the United States and Canada (including territories and possessions) exchange information with as many other US and Canadian stations as possible on the 160, 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands. You can only work a station once during the contest period!! Contest Period: Begins 2100 UTC Saturday and runs through 0259 UTC Monday. Contest Exchange- the required exchange consists of: Serial No. + Precedence (Q/A/B/U/M/S) + [your call sign] + Check + ARRL/RAC Section Yes that is a lot of information to exchange but it is the part that makes Sweepstakes fun and challenging. Lets look at the exchange in some detail. Serial Number: A consecutive contact number starting with 1 Precedence: ¡°Q¡± for Single Operator, QRP (5 watts or less) ¡°A¡± for Single Operator, Low Power (more than 5 watts, but no greater than 100 watts) ¡°B¡± for Single Operator, High Power (more than 100 watts, but no greater than legal limit) ¡°U¡± for Any Single Operator Unlimited Power Category (High, Low, or QRP) ¡°M¡± for Multioperator, High Power or Multioperator, Low Power ¡°S¡± for School Club Your Call Sign: The call sign must be included as part of the exchange. Check: The last two digits of the year the operator or the station was first licensed. The same Check must be sent throughout the contest. ARRL/RAC Section: Send and log the abbreviations in the Contest Multipliers A Sweepstakes exchange goes like this: CQing: CQ SweepStakes November Juliet one Foxtrot Answering Station: Kilo Echo one India Hotel CQing: KE1IH 203 M NJ1F 77 ENY Answering: 456 U KE1IH 87 ENY CQing: Thank You SweepStakes November Juliet one Foxtrot Now it is very common to miss some of the exchange so asking for the missing information is best practice rather than asking for the entire exchange. Operating Time All stations may operate no more than 24 of the 30 hours. Scores will be calculated from contacts logged during the first 24 hours of operation. OK some operating awards that you can purchase if you qualify are: Sweepstakes Participation Pins- Participation Pins Proudly display your participation in the CW or Phone Sweepstakes with an attractive Sweepstakes Participation Pin. Each pin includes the year and mode and has become a popular tradition in the November Sweepstakes event. Participation Pins will be available for purchase at the ARRL Store, and not through the Contest Program as has been done in the past. Pins can be ordered by visiting the ARRL Store at home.arrl.org/action/Shop/Store. And as previously mentioned if you work a Sweep Clean Sweep Keepsake Coffee Mugs- Clean Sweep Mugs Commemorate working your ¡°clean sweep¡± by purchasing your November Sweepstakes mug. To earn your mug, work all ARRL/RAC sections during the CW or Phone November Sweepstakes. November Sweepstakes Mugs will be available for purchase at the ARRL Store, and not through the Contest Program as has been done in the past. Mugs can be ordered by visiting the ARRL Store at https://home.arrl.org/action/Store/Product-Details/productId/2019824596 Full Rules at Click here for the complete ARRL November Sweepstakes rules (PDF) Using a computer logging program makes this contest much more enjoyable and simplifies submitting an entry. Both N1MM (free) and N3FJP (purchase) software have support for Sweepstakes. Well the ARRL has anothe

The SCARA Monday night, November 11, meeting will be held at the Saratoga County Fire Training Center at 7pm. Jim, K2LM, will talk about the history of the club¡¯s repeaters. Did you know that a long time ago the 147.240 and 147.000 repeaters had callsigns of WR2AND and WR2ADN ? He will show photos of each of the four sites and how adding the last site on the Halfmoon water tower completes the repeater plan to have good VHF mobile coverage of the county.

Contests for this weekend
3
We are in the fall contest season and this weekend offers many options to get on your wireless station with something for every mode. Those who enjoy RTTY or have never made a RTTY QSO the Worked All Europe Contest is an excellent opportunity to give the mode a try. WAE DX Contest, RTTY: 0000Z, Nov 9 to 2359Z, Nov 10 Oh yea this contest has a very interesting twist that called QTC traffic. So stations will ask if you have or want QTC. So what the heck is QTC? Well in a nutshell is an exchange of QSO data (Time, Call and Serial Number) of stations that you have worked limited to 10 QTC¡¯s. The N1MM program makes this very easy to send or receive QTC especially for RTTY is it a matter of a couple of Key Strokes. Here is a link for N1MM https://www.rttycontesting.com/tutorials/n1mm/operating-wae-rtty-with-n1mm/ Here is a helpful video https://n1mmwp.hamdocs.com/mmfiles/waerttyqtc2018-mp4/ Complete Rules for the WAE RTTY contest are at https://www.darc.de/der-club/referate/conteste/wae-dx-contest/en/wae-rules/ On ten meters this weekend is the 10-10 International Fall Digital contest 10-10 Int. Fall Contest, Digital: 0001Z, Nov 9 to 2359Z, Nov 10 complete rules at http://www.ten-ten.org/index.php/activity/2013-07-22-20-26-48/qso-party-rules Looking for a fun in a short SSB contest? Hand Keys or Vibroplex-type ¡°bugs¡± should be used. Non-AWA members with 29-Style rigs are welcome to join in! The objective is to contact as many other 1929 stations as possible. Since we use early designs, it is a cacophony of whooping, chirping, buzzing, clicking, drifting, swishing, swaying, warbling, and other interesting signals. This is what ham radio sounded like in 1929 and for two weekends in November it¡¯s 1929 again on the ham bands! The 1929 QSO Party was started in 1991 and was championed for several years by Bruce Kelley, W2ICE, an AWA co-founder.
