AWA Bruce Kelly 1929 QSO Party transmitters
? ?So this contest caught my attention because you have to use a 1929 transmitter or replica. Well I don¡¯t think the Elecraft K3s or FT-1000 qualify so I checked out the Antique Wireless Association website to learn about 1929 transmitter designs. While I have been licensed for ¡°a while¡± and learned about ¡°valves¡± AKA tubes, they were rapidly being replaced with transistors and IC chips when I was first licensed. So I did a little research on the antique wireless website and found a lot of interesting information on building a suitable transmitter at https://www.antiquewireless.org/homepage/bk-build-info/ Also the rules are for the transmitter and not the receiver so the K3s and FT-1000 can be used. The antique wireless museum is an awesome place that has an amazing collection and displays of wireless technology thru the years. It is a little over a 3 hour drive from Saratoga Springs. https://www.antiquewireless.org/homepage/museum/ Maybe as a club we could carpool and arrange for a group visit to the museum? 73 Brian Pro

ARRL Sweepstakes CW this weekend 3
This weekend there is another contest, AKA good reason to fire-up your wireless HF station. Whether learning or looking to improve your CW skills or a super CWop. This weekend offers a fantastic opportunity to do that as well as Finnish off your Worked All States. the ARRL Sweepstakes contests are like Field Day except with a longer exchange. Like Field day the objective is to work all ARRL Sections and Canadian provinces. The exchange is (NO SIGNAL REPORT) just a QSO Number, Precedence (see rules for your operating class), your callsign, the last two digits of the year first licensed, ARRL Section. The contest starts at 21:00 GMT 5 pm local on Saturday but ends at 23:59 Sunday which because of the time change is 7 pm local. A typical QSO goes like this: CQ SS NJ1F KB1W KB1W NJ1F 123 M NJ1F 77 ENY 324 B KB1W 79 WMA TU QRZ SS NJ1F So if you are new or learning CW this contest especially good on Sunday afternoon when big stations are looking for a new QSO. (The rules limit to a single QSO per station during the contest) Sunday afternoon stations calling CQ will really slow down the speed to work you. Remember that most of the exchange is the same the only thing that changes is the QSO number! So if you copied all the Information from a previous QSO only the QSO number will change. Complete rules are at WWW.ARRL.ORG website (however at the time of composing this email the ARRL websites are not responding) otherwise I would be able to post the direct link to the rules. Hopefully the site issues are resolved quickly¡¡. Hope you get on the bands and experience some good propagation, and try CW. 73 Brian NJ1F Sent from my iPad Pro

CQWW SSB WOW!!!! 2
WOW!!! This past weekend¡¯s CQWW SSB contest was truly one for the record books. I hope that you got on the bands to experience the solar peak and the awesome conditions. If you got on please share your experience with the group. I was one of the operators at the K1TTT multi multi doing several hours on 160 and 80 meters which was not much fun as usual because everyone was on the high bands. I did operate on 10 meters for a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon thru sunset. During my time on 10 meters, the band was open worldwide. I had the stack of antennas pointing west and north plus the fixed south antenna for the JA and pacific opening. While CQing and having JA¡¯s, VK, ZL and the usual pacific with some south American stations answer my CQs. I also had several European stations and even an African station call! These stations were in complete darkness but the ionosphere was still able to propagate their signals. On Sunday morning after church I felt like operating but all the bands were in use at K1TTT so I turned on the K3s and got on 10 meters. Even with 100 watts and a dipole it was a rush to start at the bottom on the band and dial up the band calling stations. I worked 65 stations in 29 country¡¯s in a little over an hour. I did check and there were stations from 28.300 MHz to above 29.200 MHz! That¡¯s a lot of stations using almost 1 MHz of the band. In my other post on Friday I said that it would be possible to work DXCC during the weekend. I am attaching a picture I took of my N1MM screen on Sunday morning showing that when the picture was taken there were 106 countries spotted on 10 meters with 604 stations to work! By the way there were 100 country¡¯s on 15 meters. Yes 10 meters was the place to be on Sunday morning! NOAA and NASA reported last week that this is likely the peak of the solar cycle and the sun will begin to head to the minimum. The solar cycle is averages 11 years so we do have a couple of more years to enjoy 10 meters before the solar flux is no longer high enough for 10 meters to open on a regular basis. This coming weekend is the ARRL Sweepstakes CW contest which is followed by the SSB version in three weeks and the we have CQWW CW which should have similar propagation as the past weekend. Get on the bands and have some fun! 73 Brian NJ1F

CQWW SSB Contest this weekend 7
This weekend the most entered ham radio contest is happening at the ¡°PEAK¡± of the current sunspot cycle. The CQ World Wide DX SSB contest is happening. This means the bands will be full with 45,000 plus amateurs from around the globe getting on for a 48 hour period starting at 8 pm local time on Friday evening running thru 7:59 pm local Sunday evening. During the 48 hour period it is possible to work DXCC contact 100 countries with a 100 watts and wire antennas. OK some tips for maximizing your enjoyment and working some great DX. It is a contest so the DX stations aren¡¯t looking for a long QSO. They want your callsign and CQ zone (which in the case of NY is zone 5). Knowing what to say and when will maximize your fun. Typical QSO is something like this HQ9X: CQ contest Hotel Quebec 9 Xray NJ1F: November Juliet one foxtrot HQ9X November Juliet one foxtrot 59 7 (If the dx station has your call correct just answer with the exchange; unless the station doesn¡¯t have your complete and correct callsign. NJ1F 59 5 HQ9X QRZ Couple of tips Call with your complete callsign. Avoid saying unnecessary words like ¡°PLEASE COPY¡±, ¡°Roger¡± or ¡°Thank You¡± and repeating the DX stations and your callsign. They know their call and will appreciate your quick exchange. So what band to be on tips Friday evening at the beginning of the contest well be on what ever band you can work stations. Don¡¯t give up because of the pileups ups. My rule of thumb is to call in a pileup no more than two times during the first 4 hours of the contest before turning the dial to the next station. Don¡¯t keep calling in a pileup when there is a easily worked station just a couple khz away! Friday evening between 11 pm and 2 am the east coast W2 has an advantage to work stations in Europe at their sunrise on 40 thru 160 meters. Saturday morning about one hour before local sunrise east coast W2 has a big advantage to work Europe to the east on the high bands 20 thru 10 meters, the pacific and west on 40 thru 160. Saturday morning post sunrise thru afternoon check out 15 and 10 meters later 20 meters. Saturday late afternoon look for pacific stations on 10, 15 and 20 meters with a big enhancement 1 hour plus or minus local sunset. Saturday post sunset chances are 20 meters will be open and 40 thru 160. This is the time to work the Caribbean and European stations on 40 thru 160. Sunday is a repeat of Saturday but the pileups might be smaller if the sun doesn¡¯t have a solar storm. (while a solar flare causes radio blackout after a couple of hours conditions are enhanced on the higher bands) While you don¡¯t have to send in a log to CQ, if you get on please make a couple of contacts with stations in the contest so the contest log checkers know that the station you work didn¡¯t just make a one off contact. You can also send in a ¡°check log¡± to CQ without entering the contest. The CQWW complete rules and details are available at https://cqww.com/ If you need logging software N1MM is a FREE logging program that makes logging and scoring easy for CQWW and many other contests. It is available for download at https://n1mmwp.hamdocs.com/ Hope to hear you on the bands! 73 Brian NJ1F

Saratoga County ARES Leadership
Good morning, Saratoga Countyhas an immediate need to fill three open positions in our ARESleadership to ensure the County continues providing trained radiooperators and equipment during severe storms, natural disasters, and other events requiring reliable communications. What isARES? TheAmateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensedamateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications andequipment, with their local ARES leadership, for communicationsduty in the public service when disaster strikes. Amateur radiooperators use their training, skills, and equipment to providecommunications during emergencies When All Else Fails?. Hams serveour communities when storms or other disasters damage criticalcommunication infrastructure, including cell towers, and wired andwireless networks. Amateur radio can function completelyindependently of the internet and phone systems. Since myappointment to Section Emergency Coordinator (EC) in January ofthis year I have tried filling both positions as I search for areplacement EC in Saratoga County. I have not been as successful asI would have liked so, I am reaching out to see if there are anyradio operators ready and willing to step up and volunteer some oftheir time working with other Saratoga County ARES leadership toensure we are prepared when the call for help arrives. I would like to invite everyone to join me next Thursday, October 14th for a Hotwash of the entire SET event. I'll open the Zoom session at 7:00 PM and plan for a couple of hours to discuss what went well and areas we can improve upon. REMINDER - SCARA October club meeting
Its time for the October meeting. NOTE the time and location, this is a change of venue for October only !!! Hey, here is something to shake up your club meeting experience in October. Our meeting will be on Oct 14, the usual date, but the meeting will be something we have never tried before. Since Oct 14 is a holiday, and people do not have to trudge to the office, we have decided to hold a daytime meeting instead of the normal nightly meeting. We thought we would hold a POTA (Parks on the Air) activation along with a Fox Hunt at the Saratoga State Park. We will meet at 1 PM in the Warming Hut at the park. That¡¯s just off of the Avenue of the Pines entrance right by Route 9. One of our experienced activators will set up a station and we will get a chance to see a POTA station in action. Simultaneously with this event we will tote out the club¡¯s Fox, and have it pinging away if anyone wants to explore looking for it. Just a note, we are doing this in the ¡°free¡± part of the park. You do not want to go into the park via the toll booths, as you might get unnecessary charges for park entry.. Jim KG2H
