Thank you for sharing.

Amateurs have always experimented with the latest technology which IMHO keeps the hobby fun and fresh even after close to 5 decades licensed I still find something new to try!

Here is a video posted to the?amateur radio subreddit last week about AI use by an Austrian station during a recent contest:?

What Tim is doing is just using AI to generate the speech. He is still the operator, has to copy the calling stations and do the logging etc. Others have experimented with recording all the letters and numbers and having a program select the recording to play back. While this kind of worked it really didn¡¯t sound very good. What N3QE is doing sounds pretty good but it seemed to take longer to complete a QSO. Yes he did chose a female voice which does standout during a contest. I don¡¯t think we have to worry about completely automated contest stations in the near term.

?

I know that several Amateurs have created FT-4/8 Bots that do what you described turn it on in the morning and let it work stations all day while the op is doing other things. I don¡¯t see any fun in operating a Bot.

There is one aspect of our hobby that A.I. and automation cannot replace. Human interaction.

Goes to show you just can't believe everything you hear.? Funny isn't it that he chose to use a female voice.

I'm very impressed and its a huge step into the future with AI but I believe it to be a detriment to contesting.? Clear a frequency, set it running at 2pm on Saturday, go visit your uncle 300 miles away staying overnight, return home Sunday and turn it off at 2pm.? I can see so much abuse with something like this.? I'll have to respectfully disagree with you Brian, I hope he doesn't present it at Hamvention or anywhere else.? The less people that know about or know how to setup and operate a virtual operator the better.?? Sure, you'll need a control operator but what do you think the chances area those hard core numbers/points chasers will abide by that?? Its great technology but I don't see a place for it in ham radio.

Well this evening marks a true mile stone in my Amateur Radio career.

While using the clubs Wilton Remote station I had a QSO with N3QE on 40 meters. Not remarkable except that Tim has been doing a lot of experimenting with A.I. and has incorporated in his contest station. So like the linked video shows I had a QSO with Tim¡¯s A.I. operator ¡°Tina¡± asked for a repeat of the serial number.

?

I hope that Tim gives a paper on his experimenting with A.I. at the upcoming Hamvention in Dayton.

?

While not my QSO this is a link of another stations QSO that posted to Facebook.

Our hobby is truly a life long hobby and there is always something new to experiment or explore.
