Please use DXSummit
2
Please feel free to spot yourself, and other K2B ops. Before starting a slot, I suggest you check to see if there is another K2B op finishing up on your band/mode. Locate them at their frequency and do a hand-off, if you can. You can also use DXSummit if you are going on one of the less-popular bands, like 10, 15, 17 and 75 meters. Look where other K2 stations are operating and set up near them. Like why CVS sets up across the street from a Walgreens..... Suggest if you don't already know, to learn to use DXSummit filter. In "search" type K2 and hit return. It should then show you spots for all the K2 stations. Yes, if you're K2B it's a little depressing. But maybe we can change that. David, K2WPM

When passing over several cells highlighted with a colored outline, Names popped up. What is that? Are these slots still open? No call has been inserted. Why are they popping up?? -- George K4GM

" No Self Spotting Allowed in this Contest"
8
I did not notice any evidence of being spotted in the INFO window in N1MM so I decided to Self-Spot. That's when I received this message. " No Self Spotting Allowed in this Contest". Am I using an outdated UDC or is this something to be corrected? Fortunately, I had lots and lots of spots on RBN so I was being spotted after all. -- George K4GM

Schedule change
Hello all, I had signed up for 2 hours on 40 SSB on Tuesday morning but realize I can't do it because my husband has a doctor appointment I must attend with him. So I changed my 40 SSB stint to early afternoon. 40 SSB in the morning on Tuesday should be a busy time, so if someone(s) can pick up a slot or two then, it would likely be productive. Have fun! 73, Kay N3KN

New op... N1MM+ config?
8
Hi folks, First time operating at K2B and it's been a couple of years since I've been around to participate in 13 Colonies so a bit rusty on how things work. Is there an N1MM config I should use? Thanks, Sean N3RTW

Competing July 4 Event
2
You should be aware of a new competing special event at the same time, and using the same concepts, as 13 Colonies Special Event. It's being heavily promoted -- several days at top of QRZ front page. It celebrates America's 250th anniversary ... which is two years in the future. I don't know how this affects us, maybe not at all. Just in case people ask you which event you are... here is a link to QRZ post. https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/k4a-americas-250th-commemoration-of-independence-launch-edition.918423/ Hope everyone had a great Field Day; now fill those slots! Operating guidelines / frequency plan?
3
Are there general operating guidelines for K2B? I don't remember much about last year. My N1MM function key file contains just the normal CQ, so I assume folks will recognize the 1x1 calls without any special prompting. My F3 "thank you" function key contains this: TU GBA {MYCALL} What the heck does "GBA" mean? I dimly recall someone suggested we send 76 instead of 73 at the end of a QSO. Is that recommended, or was that a flash in the pan? What frequencies are recommended for calling CQ? Up 76 kHz from the bottom of the band? Something else? Thanks. --- mike N4CF x (x)

2024 K2B and POTA
I have talked with Dave. Again this year, if you operate as K2B from a Parks On the Air location, send me that ADIF log and I'll get it uploaded to the POTA site. But still keep it in your log to be send at the end of the event. I only need it to upload. Good luck and Have fun 73 Tim / AA4SS timboyd@...

Battle of Great Bridge
3
Starting a new thread Given our QSL card* highlights the Battle of Great Bridge, I figured I'd do some web searching since I'll need some filler about VA history as I gab when not working gobs of stations .... see link from Wikipedia: Battle of Great Bridge - Wikipedia "The Battle of Great Bridge was fought December 9, 1775, in the area of Great Bridge, Virginia, early in the American Revolutionary War. The [Battle of Great Bridge] led to the departure of Royal Governor Lord Dunmore and any remaining vestiges of British power over the Colony of Virginia during the early days of the conflict. Following increasing political and military tensions in early 1775, both Dunmore and colonial rebel leaders recruited troops and engaged in a struggle for available military supplies. The struggle eventually focused on Norfolk, where Dunmore had taken refuge aboard a Royal Navy vessel. Dunmore's forces had fortified one side of a critical river crossing south of Norfolk at Great Bridge, while rebel forces had occupied the other side. In an attempt to break up the rebel gathering, Dunmore ordered an attack across the bridge, which was decisively repulsed. Colonel William Woodford, the Virginia militia commander at the battle, described it as "a second Bunker's Hill affair".[2] Shortly thereafter, Norfolk, at the time a Loyalist center, was abandoned by Dunmore and the Tories, who fled to navy ships in the harbor. Rebel-occupied Norfolk was destroyed on January 1, 1776 in an action begun by Dunmore and completed by rebel forces." See the wikipedia site for more info about the Battle of Great Bridge. There is a park highlighting the Battle of Great Bridge is located near Cheaspeake, VA ... see: Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways Foundation (gbbattlefield.org) As far as I know it is not a POTA listed park. However, it would be cool to activate during the 13 colonies event. In fact there are celebrations at the park on the 4th of July, including a youth encampment. Mike, WA8AHZ you can view our QSL card at QRZ.com, serach for K2b.

13 Colonies 2024
14
Here is the overview from Ken about 2024 13 Colonies. I have already started researching this. Anyone have any particular knowledge / expertise in this area? The 2024 theme for the 13 Colonies SE this year is "Colony State Militias".. Every state has tons of different formed citizen Militias! They are all on the internet. Pick one out, and highlight them for your QSL card for your state!. These were the State Volunteers! The term "Minute Men" is a blanket meaning for the over-all citizen soldiers so I will use that term and graphics for the main certificate. You can use a special flag, seal/badge/uniform/soldiers, any graphic you can find! Even if your State Militia of choice had a famous leader? You can mention this but try to high light the group as a whole. David, k2WPM

Logbook of the World
12
I have many requests to upload K2B log(s) to Logbook of the World. There are two options: Each K2B op can attempt to do so individually. I say attempt, because LoTW is not an easy, user-friendly program for this kind of thing. (My preference). Or I can upload as if it were I, who had all the 23,000 QSOs, and adjust Station Location(s) accordingly. (Likely what I have to do). Can people alert me if they have uploaded - or plan to upload - their K2B logs to LoTW. I will upload the rest. Thanks, David, K2WPM

Post event summaries
21
This thread will summarize the results from other 13 Colonies as well as our own results. First, the report from WM3PEN: WM3PEN was down by about 1100 contacts. We did have 11128 contacts including 2 SSTV with several SWL reports from Louisiana to Spain. This was during 1 hour of operation on July 4. 85 Satellite QSOs Our mix of modes was fairly even. cw: 2,524 ssb: 4,242 digital: 4,349 We had tornado warnings 1 day (no touchdowns, but we did have cloud rotation) and band conditions were the pits. Total radio blackouts several days for periods at a time. If it wasn't for FT4/8 we would have been off the air completely. City noise, storms, and bad propagation are not your friends. 20 and 40 meters had about the same number of contacts

I think I forgot to post a breakdown of my effort. Band QSOs 3.5 104 7 159 10 33 14 303 18 215 21 222 24 1 28 3 50 5 Total 1045 My QSO count was down a little from last year. I think due to some poor band conditions during the week plus the never ending barrage of thunderstorms that had my tower cranked down and antennas grounded at some point almost every day. The overall increase in QSOs over last year is great, probable due to increased participation on our part. I heard the split CW pileup generated by one of the other states one night and was a bit miffed. After a day or two I realized why. There were many on line complaints about that state being very rare. Based on what I listened to in that pile up, only experienced contesters or DXers were getting through. Our main audience in this event is the every day ham with no interest in the previously mentioned. I am a CW almost only kind of guy and like many of my CW team mates, our rag chew speeds might exceed the wildest dreams of many, but I am willing to QRS as much as needed to accommodate anyone that calls. QSO rate is not the goal here. I think that we saturated the bands is good. It puts everyone on a more even playing field. Lets keep it up. Another great week celebrating our Country! 73, Chuck K4QS On Monday, July 10, 2023 at 06:03:50 PM EDT, David Wright <dwright@...> wrote: Attached is K2B summary.
