I¡¯ll take a look after work today. Thanks for the heads up. I¡¯ll probably throw the Wayback Machine link in there too. Re: Kurzweil K1000 Special Edition for free
This is a handy keyboard to have. IIRC, they integrated the expansion daughterboard into the unit, so upgrading is filling ROM slots, updating the OS, and handling jumper stuff. I have the mark II version of this with the extended keyboard, and the upgrade on it has a wonderful Rhodes sound in it. I too would hate to see this hit a landfill, so if nobody else wants it I'd be happy to take ownership of it, but I want to let others get a shot at it first.

None of us know what to do with it. I'd rather someone got some use from it rather than sending it to a landfill. There are also some manuals that we have for it. Some of the sliders scratch and pop as they are moved - a common thing for sliders. I will expect the recipient to assume shipping costs. Re: A Nonfunctioning 100gx -- Something new
Just to add to what others have said:
?
The most common paper electrolytic caps in older equipment were manufactured by putting an insulating paste between two conductors then applying a small trickle voltage to 'set' the insulating paste.
?
When a piece of electronic equipment is left to sit idle for extended periods of time, the insulating paste can lose the 'set'. Sudden application of power can see a short-circuit through the capacitor, which will quickly heat up, sometimes explode, and sometimes take out part of the circuitry with it. When repairing something after such a failure, you may need to repair burnt circuitry as well.
Other than collateral damage to the circuitry, there is usually nothing ominous about an old electrolytic capacitor exploding.
?
Also, it is sometimes possible to apply a lower voltage and slowly bring an older piece of gear up to full power. This will only be likely to work with older gear: newer things and especially digital devices will usually not function at all below a certain voltage and be fully operational above that voltage.
The best tool for trying this is called a Variac and can be quite expensive. It is possible to construct a "poor man's variac" using a lamp with an incandescent bulb (must be incandescent; LED or CFLs will not work for this). |

Re: Upgrading the 1000Series Modules
That would be fine. First I need the module working, but with luck that'll happen, so there's no rush.

Upgrading the 1000Series Modules
Okay, for those of you who are new to this, or have forgotten, here's the way this works.

David Brown got Kurzweil to give us the right to burn update ROM chips as long as it wasn't for profit. That's why there's so much binary file stuff on k1000.net. I don't know anyone with a chip burner, so I don't have a resource for it (David did all of mine). The upgrade from an SX to a Pro2 is worth the effort, because you get some wonderful sounds. And the 5.x OS versions have some useful features. Nicole -----Original Message-----
