Hi again Jules,
Glad to be of help in any way!
Engine v.1.80 and setups v.2 mean that this is an original version instrument. Upgrades are 'relatively simple' (ha ha). Basically, it's a case of removing the Engine and setups ROMS, and installing new ones, together with the added sound ROMs. I'm generalising wildly, but that's the gist of things. Upgrading the engine adds new features in how the instrument operates and offers extra housekeeping, while the setup ROMs provide new ROM libraries in a completely different order from the previous ones. If you check your instrument lists it'll probably read 000_piano, 001 - strings, etc. By the time you get to v.3, you'll find that the first few sounds are all pianos, the next strings, etc. V.5 soundlists are different again (See the instrument lists on k1000 and you'll see what I mean). The other thing that needs doing (I'm relying on memory is one cut and one jumper on the main board at JP03 and JP04. I forget which is which, but I believe the upgrade documentation is all on k1000.net, or in the files section of the Facebook group:
Digitally distorted sounds on an upgraded version is usually a pointer to crud on the pins of the sound ROMs. I have an upgraded PX that regularly needs the recalcitrant chips pulling out and cleaning every so often. After that things return to normal (at last for a while). Good luck with your restoration on that one, and have fun exploring the extra sounds and features!
Best wishes,
David.
