Free Standing Wooden Mast for Duo800
5
Bernd, I saw where you mentioned plans including a wooden mast for the early Duo800. Carbon is still a little pricey and I like the ability to make a wooden mast. I have Duo800 plans with the carbon layup. Is it possible to get the wooden plans? North Carolina sharpies routinely sailed with unstayed wooden mast, in the winter gales in the sounds of Carolina. Best way of finishing epoxy fiberglass? Workflow?
5
I have been building my first boat just small 3,5m sailboat as first practice build before taking on most likely eco 6. What is your best way of working with epoxy and fiberglass to get as close to as possible to shop finish? I personally have not tried peelply is it worth it? Also is there some other alternatives? My current optimal workflow lookslike 1. Basecoat dry rolling epoxy with foamroller 2. super quick rough sanding 3. applying glass fabric and covering with foamroller 4. Quick sand 240 grit applying additional coats up to 3 to get good sanding finish 5. Painting over with marine grade paint 2-3 coats Few questions: Would peel ply make process faster/allow adding more epoxy on single go so no need for multiple layers? How ready is peelply finish still needs sanding ? Any alternative ways of doing close to factory finish that i could skip some steps or make some process in otherways? Lessons so far: On next build looking to base coat all ply pre cutting, did not do it with this build but would greatly speed up the process.

DUO 480C build started
8
I cut out 2 bulkheads today so I guess I¡¯ve officially started my build. I bought the plans a couple weeks ago and I have been gathering materials. I have a couple questions about the plans. Am I correct in assuming bulkheads 1, 2, and 3 show the upper and lower part on the drawings together, but I build them in 2 pieces? Also, in Brian¡¯s build blog he mentions there is an option in the drawings to make a curved front for the cabin, but I don¡¯t see it in my drawings. Thanks, Mark

Choice of plywood, Was: Re: Carbon tupes for free standing masts
14
Hi Bill, A year ago I discussed with Bernd about the choice of ply. One of the key consideration is weight. He said that impregnated marine ply are usually very heavy and not suitable. From what I leant, a regular sheet of oukoume ply after being covered by 2 layers of epoxy is water resistant. The only thing to take of are any hole you make into the ply. They have to be oversized than properly saturated with epoxy than drilled again at the correct diameter. This is to prevent any water from being in contact with the wood inside. The other consideration was strength and flexibility. This is were the oukoume ply structure has another advantage over other types of plywood. One of the major pain in the building process will be to coat and polish every single piece of ply before even starting assembly. I will be trying to get local manpower in Thailand to assist. Will they do it properly? Would I do it better? How to control the quality of the job is my biggest question.

Choosing between designs and rig options
53
Hi, I have personally bought multiple study plans(kd 860, eco 520, eco 6.5(few other designs from trimarans also, composite ones are way too much work ditched them already.)) already and having hard time on deciding which option to go for. I know im not going to do mega build which I consider to be 7-8meters and upwards. Things that mostly consider me are the different mast and sail designs and their properties which i am not so familiar with. Layout design I am fan of eco 6. While loving the sail design from Eco 520, with dual furling ones. Every sail setup has its sides. But what I am wondering is that how much am I sacrificing on performance if I go with dual furling sail design. I have some prior experience with kiteboarding and windsurfing so kind of know basics with wind. I bet here is someone way more smart than what I am when it comes to sail designs and their performances. What I would be interested is to rank them to give some scale of degree in following categories: - Ease of use - Costs - Performance upwind - Performance speed Type of rigs: sloop, gunter, jigsaw duo?, dual furling? Ultimate goal of the build is to sail coastally from Finland to Mediterranean one summer that is to come(1-4ppl). Not in rush but taking my time stopping to cities and kiteboarding spots. Best regards, Pete

Carbon tupes for free standing masts
9
I just finished a special version of the DUO 480 JIGSAW for Harald. You know he built (and some others too) a beautiful Cataproa. See video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nGChrDX3tg Parallel rig or sloop was the critical point. In the end, it will be the parallel* rig. Because I found at last a manufacturer. Brian in New Zealand built the first DUO 480 Jigsaw with the parallel* rig see video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiTbOKIuxlY&t=2s Because carbon masts are a lot cheaper there. Now, this company in the Netherlands makes just the good carbon tubes with an acceptable price of Euro 553.32). I will place the company address in the file folder of our forum. * many use biplane rig for a parallel rig. But does the rig have anything to do with a biplane?

Bernard I would like to build a 860 open, with the single sail plan. Im in the US. Can we have someone here cut the kit? I would pickup from CLC in annp. Md How much cheaper would it be, then building the standard 860 if i order the kit from one of your venders? Please let me know the main differances in sailing performance conpaired to the standard 860. Im going to use the boat for wxtended Bahamas crusing, as live in the miami Area Thxs Bill Mansfield

Duo480c from Australia
2
Hi all, I came across this boat recently on social media and contacted the builder. Lachlan built this boat and several others for cruising in the Whitsunday area in Australia. With his permission I am posting it here as it is both a nice looking example of the 480 , but also has a few interesting features. As you can see it has a single mast setup which is based on the Laser sailing dinghy using mast, boom and sail from that design. I expected with a sail plan like that, being only around 7m2 it would be grossly underpowered but he says with the strong winds typical in his area he frequently sailed around 10 knots. The Duo 480 sail area is specified around the 17 m2 area which is what my own 480 has, and I have sat on 10 knots or better for long runs at a time. So to learn about similar speeds obtained with a much smaller sail area is a testimony to the hull speed potential of this design of Bernd's. The sail furls around the unstayed mast similar to the bi plane rig set up that is "standard". Other interesting features include the anchor handling at the front over a solid platform in place of a trampoline and twin rudders that are "borrowed" from some model of beach catamaran. Lachlan has since sold the boat . Regards, Bryan
