Re: Another 520 question
Hello Michael,? I suspect Bernd might tell you that if you want the conventional sloop rig you should build the Eco 5.50. The rig and sails are always going to be one of the major costs in building one of these catamarans. I don't think that the twin furling headsail rig should necessarily cost any more than a conventional sloop rig where there are other expenses with boom and the cost of building the more complex mainsail. The mast for the twin headsail rig should be easy to build yourself, and you can save money by doing your own rigging using dyneema shrouds. If I was doing the rig I would have the smaller sail on a wire luff, DIY furler, and look at doing a luff spar furler for the bigger sail, and once again I would try and find a DIY solution. You could also use small continuous line furlers for the sails, which do not cost so much, but you cannot partially furl the sail with a continuous line furler. I think this twin headrail rig would be ideal for a small catamaran being very easy to handle, and is part of the overall 5.20 package. Always fun to look at all the options. David |
Re: Another 520 question
Long ago, before rotomolded kayaks, whitewater kayaks of the day were being torn up from abraision against the river rocks. Abraision comparison tests were done between fiberglass, Kevlar and polyester fabrics.? The clear winner was polyester fabric. Two common examples are Xynole polyester and Dynel. Both of these products surpass kevlar for abraison. Kevlar is better for impact loads but not abraison. Polyester fabrics are much less expensive too. David Mancebo

Re: 520 build in Florida
Thanks, David to show the way how easy it is to build a furler. We had on the Pelican a code 1 with 40 m2. We never used a luff spar.
Mike, the ECO 520 plans show how the jib(s) have to be made with the sleeve and the zipper. You have nothing to invent by yourself. Use the information in the plans. Bernd .? |

Re: 520 build in Florida
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello Mike, ? Regarding your question about building your own roller furler. I made my jib furler for my Eco6 catamaran. This was not a furler with a luff spar, but rather the jib furls around its own wire luff which is fine for a small jib. Ronstan makes small jib furlers but here in New Zealand the suitable sized furler was still $500. I did a Google search for making a furler and found Joels Navigator blog site. There he gives very good instructions and photos of how to make a furler. I did also find something on the Duckworks site. ? My furler is basically made out of workshop scrap bits n¡¯pieces. I purchased the central eye bolt, a stainless steel ball bearing miniature thrust bearing, and a standard Ronstan ball bearing swivel for the top swivel. All up the cost was about $50, so only one tenth of the Ronstan furler, and it seems to work just fine. A jib is non reefable with this type of furler, so if you want to be able to partially furl the jib you would need a furler with a luff spar, but I have seen information on the web about how to DIY these. ? 2. Anyone have any idea how to DIY a roller furling system for the 520. Would prefer on that would allow removal of the sails for storage. Thanks Mike? |

Hi Philip
The easiest way is to add the photos to a message. Click on the picture symbol? A window opens, and you can drop the photos there direct or select file by name. Then click on ADD.? That is all you have to do. Cheers Bernd |

Hi Philip You have done very interesting things. Have you some more photos from our boat and sail. There are now more Cataproas under construction. Your new designed and built sail can be an inspiration for other Cataproa owners. I understand what you have done, but for newcomers it can be difficult to understand. Have you, or can you make some photos. We do not expect masterpieces of photos or, if you can, videos. But this would help greatly. Cheers Bernd N.B.: Out of personal reasons, I can not sail this year with my Cataproa? |

Hi Bernd , thanks for your support . As we are talking about mast , I have come to solution for the mast lock that can be installed on the deck with stainless steel plate and will positively lock the mast . Mast should have fibreglass ring glued on to it at the precise location just over the deck level and then whole bearing is closed off by steel rig , two half rings actually as you have to put it on after the mast has been inserted. Very simple. What do you say to that ?
... here is the rough drawing of it ... Cheers Zee |

Hi Zee
You are working hard. I like the detail of the deck mast bearing. Code the rim with a mixture of graphite, fused silica and Epoxy. About 30 % graphite contend. There is no better bearing for a rotating mast.? Success Bernd |

Re: Which Epoxy
Yeah, thanks guys, good advice. You just confirmed my findings. :-) I am using Trojan Fibreglass since I run out of Araldite and more or less happy with the price and quality. They have Q-Cells and fumed silica as well. I am finishing my scarab 650 trimaran and considering Bernd's KD122 for my next

Re: KD122 workshop and breakdown timeline
Ciao
n Italy there are several epoxy resin manufacturers and I have good prices.
According to Bernd's material sheet, I put 10% more resin in it and have the cost estimate made by the customer.
Any customer who calls me must purchase the project from Bernd and then speak to me and my suppliers.
Thank you for the moment ;-) |
Re: Which Epoxy
G'day Daniel. I too recommend Trojan Fibreglass series 500 resin. I recently used it for a small project and had no problems.? A friend finished up using it on his balsa core 45 foot power cat.?
