Re: MaXi catamaran plans ready
Dear Bernd,
This is such exciting news!!! Well done! It looks an absolute cracker!! It¡¯s one of those designs I can just imagine myself setting off along the coast in. Anyway, sorry for gushing but I had to have a fan girl moment. Keep up the awesome work.? warmest regards, zachary.? |
Re: Kd1000 roof templates
Ok. Thanks for the info. No new photos, summer is coming and whether is getting too much hot to work inside the pvc cover. I have to coordinate the work according to the weather, when its hot I work outside building the hatches for cockpit and other stuff. When it s cloudy I work inside. No much progress the eyes can see, but every day I'm sure I am one step forward. Thanks Bernd Em qui, 29 de out de 2020 15:01, Bernd Kohler <ikarus342000@...> escreveu: Hello Tiago |
BUILDING DUO 900 ITALY
Hi Bernd and to the whole forum
I started building the DUO 900 Italy for one of my clients.
I'll be posting some pictures on the forum soon.
90% original built boat, except the hull connecting beams, I will build them in composite resin / plywood / fiberglass.
Bye
PS There is no lock-down in Italy yet but he doesn't stop me either ... :-)) |
Re: Kd1000 roof templates
Hello Tiago
You can build half a roof and reverse the templates. To connect the two at the center by using 12 mm butstrapes 300 mm wide on the? inside and out. Use filled at the corners and glass the roof also over the butstrapps. The whole is then even stronger. Some new photos? You was sending me a lot. But with my extreme slow internet it takes hours. Cheers Bernd |

Hello
What a progress, enormously!!!? That looks good.? Now the shape is clearly shown. Finished for this year? I image, it is getting too cold to use Epoxy. Or perhaps with a heater some work on the inside? We did this as we were building our Pelican. We covered the roof with "bubble plastic" for isolation from the cold Cheers Bernd |

Will this work on the Pelican. Or should I rather look at the bi-rig you had on the Orynx Ralph On Thu, 29 Oct 2020, 15:39 Bernd Kohler, <ikarus342000@...> wrote:

MaXi catamaran plans ready
At last, the MaXI plans are ready. Was taking longer as expected. But I was feeling like re-inventing the wheel!
For example the mast. The costs of masts are exorbitant today. So I designed a suitable mast for the boat which is also relative easy to build.
Which is more expensive as a MaXi catamaran. All other roll systems are specific made for a design and not for sale. Much thinking was going of course in the righting system, mast float,
Water ballast yes or no. To build them is optional, but the plans include construction drawings
The study plan and plans are available here

Re: New entry in the forum - first question
Mmmhhhh Ivan ... very interesting suggestion ... stressing only one dimension ... if the structure can remain the same (thickness of plywood, stringers etc), better LB ratio, better block ratio, different prismatic coefficient, may be less pitching, some hydrostatics calculations are necessary, it's to understand where the center of sails will be ... if the answer yo the previous questions are satisfactory with less then 50 kilos you shift from 33 feet to 36 feet! A sensitive jump!
I think that a multihull it's better to have the same wind speed till 15 kn, after that it's enough to reach 20 kn, more speed is for a good crew; at least, this is what I'm looking for, and the bigger boats of K-Design meet this target. The only thing that I have to deeply study is a tipical legal trick, in Italy we have a law that permits a simpler documentation if the boat is under 10 meters, and some rumours say that this aspect will be deleted. Bernd knows the answer ... |
Re: General Construction Question
Hi, I cannot remember that the fillet size is specified. In any case use fillets that make sense do not use a tiny fillet to do large/strenuous work. If it is a high stress area like hull to cabin floor Berndt will design the joint to be strong enough. The normal fillets I use is about 15-20 mm Radius and it works fine. Look at the boat and use some thinking and if you suspect a flaw discuss it with Berndt, he will redesign if necessary but he will always give you prompt and good advice. If you do some test joints and force them to give, the joint should be intact and the panel should break. Cheers? Philip Malan

Bernd (or anyone else) - do the plans specify the size of the fillet? Is glass tape required to strengthen the fillet?
My apologies for the detail - just trying to understand the build. Thanks! -- stephane blanchette? montreal canada kd860 |

Re: New entry in the forum - first question
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Guiseppe If the KD1000 is your choice - and I can see why as I think it is the perfect small cruising cat - it is not designed primarily for speed. As you state that speed is important to you a good way to modify the design for more speed is to lengthen the hulls by 10% or 15% but not the bridge deck. (Berndt will know what's possible) This will increase hull speed and reduce displacement to length ratios as well as creating effectively slimmer hulls for the length. All of that together with a small increase in sail area (say 5%) to compensate should give you an additional increase of something like 2 knots in maximum speed for maybe 5-7.5% increase in cost. It will also increase rough water comfort. It should also increase resale value as a 36' cat should be easier to sell and sell for more than a 33' one. I would be interested to hear Berndt's comments on this thought. Ivan |
