Re: ECO 75 solar electric built in NZ
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý??? We are reaching the point where
electric power will soon "pencil" at least as auxiliary.?? Weight
of the batteries is the killer here, especially where multihulls
are concerned with their minimal load capacity.?? Let's say 20kwh
of lithium ion batteries are at about 120kg......... a fairly
realistic figure.?? 1 hp is about .75 kw.? Lets say you are
running 5 hp = 3.75 kw??? 20kwh is 20 kw for one hour.?? That
works out to 5.3 hours at 5 hp out of 120kg or 264 lbs.??? That
means that to have a steady 5 horsepower output for 10 hours is
going to take almost exactly 500 lbs of batteries.?? That's not
that bad when one considers engine weight and fuel weight for a
gas or diesel engine.?? But it's only 10 hours.?? With sufficient
solar power one could get quite a bit of propulsion direct on a
clear day.?? Let's say 18w per square foot of solar panel, and
that's 208.3 square feet of panel.? That would be a solar array of
20.8' x 10' or 12' x 17.36'... etc.? That's a LOT of solar, and
it's NOT charging batteries, just delivering 5 HP to the prop.??
??? It's obvious that at this point we
can only use solar electric along with wind realistically.?? It
can provide additional propulsion in light winds, propulsion in
port, get us through the doldrums perhaps, and perhaps break our
bond with fossil fuels.? We can run the galley, etc with battery
electric, and we can also generate with regen, or a wind
charger.?? And we can run the watermaker......... all depending on
conditions.??? It means that you can pull into port, set anchor,
and NOT haul fuel, propane, or water when you are voyaging.???
This is exciting stuff if you look at the whole picture.? We can
also look at increasing solar panel efficiency, and battery
density to the point that this will make more and more sense over
time.
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
??? ??? ??? H.W.

Re: Waiting for Study Plans
Hi Bernd
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I apologize, you had already responded to my wife's email and resent the study plan. Not sure what happened the first time around but we have got them in hand now :-). Many Thanks Dale |

Re: Waiting for Study Plans
Hi Dale
I have no clue how this could happen. I have just posted the ECO 5.5 to the email address provited.? Would you please also look in your Spam folder please? Sorry Bernd |
Re: Where to start?
Hi All
I just wanted to give you an update as you were all so helpful with my boat building journey. So, after shopping around and thinking of different ideas for boats, I have decided to enjoy the time with my kids while I am young. I bought a small Walker Bay dinghy with the ribs and sailing kit. It is obviously a huge difference between a proper cabin sail boat and a sailing dinghy but there is good reason for it. This dinghy weights about 27kg and fits at my house, so no storage costs and we can go to all these small lakes and rivers nearby. It also means I can teach my wife and kids about being on the water.? In the meantime, I will finish the reconstruction of my house and complete the Eco5 as my first real boat build. I plan to build it over 2 years and then use it for local river sailing. Trips to Budapest & Vienna with a small cabin to sleep in. Long-term, I will build something bigger with the help of a small team of tradesmen. I still love the Pelican or even the Manta with the aim to move aboard in 2032 and then sail. sail. sail (this has been my retirement plan for some time :-)). Thank you once again for your inputs. It has been more useful than you can imagine.? |

Waiting for Study Plans
Hi Bernd
My wife ordered the study plans for the Eco5.5 from your site quite a few weeks ago. She sent a couple of emails but we haven't had a response. Maybe it ended up in spam. Could you have a look - noemikirkwood@...?- it was paid via PayPal. Thanks Dale |
Re: Duo 1000 project for sale
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýTnx. Harold got financially hit by the corona and can't find money right now to buy it. But he is serious in getting the job done. So for the sake of the dream I pass it on and settle with the loss.

Re: KD 122
Another pic in the D.R. Voyager album. Since I last posted, we have glassed the tumblehome on both sides, glassed the cabin sides, finished and glassed the cabin roof, fitted the aft crossbeam and the catwalk beams, and numerous other small jobs.?

A Little More Cataproa Work
Outside commitments and cold weather have limited my work on my modified Cataproa. But I made some changes to the rig and the carbon mast is now built and getting painted. I will attach pictures of the updated rig. I moved the rig aft a little and substituted a jib boom for the original Camberspar. The jib boom pivots in line with the headstay (almost) so that the aft end of it does not lift and ease the jib leech when sheeting out. The smallest camberspar made was much too big for this boat.
My web page has a few pictures of the structually complete carbon mast at: David M |

Re: KD 122
Hi Antonio
Is Domenico building the KD 122 for you, or you are helping Domenico? To tell what would be the layup to strengthen the masts accordingly can be not done here Because this is a general forum. Individual changes in the design. Which this is, has to be? discussed with me as the designer |

KD 122
I'm Antonio Rondanini I'm building the KD 122 with Domenico Dispaldro, we built one of the two trees, oval in shape: 45 ¡Á 15cm at the base and 25 ¡Á 8.5cm at the top, height 13.20m, H continuous in Douglas fir and okum¨¨ plywood 4mm; we would like to cover it with carbon fiber and epoxy but we don't know what type and weight to use, can you help us?

Re: Deleted album DUO 800S Australia
#photo-notice
Hi Andrew Klees I don't think I do business here on the forum and I'll explain.
As I told you I bought four projects from Bernd (KD 860, DUO 800, DUO 900 AND ECO 75 power) and of these four I built the KD860 2013 and 2021 the Duo 900 that I will soon finish.
In recent years I have been privately contacted by people registered on this forum, who bought Bernd's plans to try to help them build (paying for it is clear) their boat. These are the two customers of the KD122 the first and now the second.
I always asked Bernd if these people had bought the plans from him and he confirmed that everything was ok.
At the time of the construction of the two KD122s I asked Bernd if he wanted the photos of the construction and he said yes. This is why I opened the KD122 Italy albums and soon one of these two customers will write on the forum to share the construction of the A-frame mast, as we are building it and posting photos here on the forum.
I'm always here for everyone (when I can) if they ask me.
The other boats I have made I have not put anything on the forum but I met Bernd in person in Italy, three beautiful days, we exchanged many ideas and he is always available. Everything can be said, but hearing MISERABLE plans seems to me to be unfair and polite, since there are so many of us here ....
I too have found errors in my four projects and in the two KD 122s but it doesn't get any better at that price and before building you have to read the project well for several months.
bye
?
PS if one day I buy another project it will be the DUO105 which in my opinion has a fantastic line as well as being a fast boat- |
