Re: New ECO6?
Rien
I hope the rudder problem is now solved; If not, and this is valid for all my boat rudders. It is important that the leading edge Epoxy filler is going not higher as shown. Otherwise, the angle is too big to bend the sides without breaking. I think Brian mentioned it already. Cheers Bernd |
Re: New ECO6?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHope the gluing up of the rudder blades has gone well. I also had problems with the plywood failing while bending the ply around. On the second blade I thought it was all good, but then as I was tightening the clamps the plywood began to crack just in from the epoxy filler at the front of the blade. It ended up a bit of a mess, but rather than discard the rudder blade I was able to repair by cutting out the damaged section of plywood and inserting a section of solid timber. ? I wondered if the failures I experienced were as a result of overfilling the leading edge with the epoxy putty mix, and I was making the rudder blades in very cold temperatures which I also thought might have contributed to the ply cracking. But that would not apply in north Queensland. ? David ? From: k-designs@... Sent: Saturday, July 6, 2019 7:41 AM ? ? Thanks, Bryan! I appreciate your comments.. ? It so happens that I have been poring over your blog, especially the rudder part, over the last week. Also Hamish¡¯ photos and the KD650 Sparta blog have been very useful. ? I have closed up the angle a little. Today Is bending day! I¡¯m reasonably confident that the foil will close without breaking. Fingers crossed. ? Regards, ? Rien. Re: New ECO6?
Hi Rien,
there was quite a link between us K designs builders here in New Zealand.I was following Rodney, who built Sparta, from when he started work, and I was also going to build a KD650. I changed my ideas when Bernd came out with the Duo 480 plans and built that instead. Rodney modified the construction jig of the rudders, and then gave it to me when he was finished with it. I recently gave it to David Thatcher who is building the Eco 6 . I also followed Hamish's build with his Eco 5.5 but I cant remember exactly our discussions about the foil construction. What we were finding was that the original angles worked sometimes with the plywood but other times would fail. I dont think the plywood now is as strong as it was maybe 20 years ago. I have not sailed my boat much the past couple of years as I have got involved more seriously with competition archery. But in any case my boat sits comfortably in my barn with no maintenance to be done. I like the look of the Eco 6 and hope you get a lot of enjoyment from her. I have not been coming on this site as much lately but I saw the images Bernd posted on Facebook of your boat cheers |

Re: New ECO6?
Rien, in many cases the quality of plywood today causes failures of the rudder foils when bending them in the jig. Close the angle up a bit with spacers and do a small test. You can check my building blog for my Duo 480 and scroll through the older pages to find the photo of the wedge? sitting on my sawbench that is an angle that will work. The foil is the same for Eco 5.5 and KD650 so probably same for the Eco6.
PS your boat looks great regards Bryan Cox |
Re: KD 860 FI
Hello all I added a couple of pictures to KD860 FI folder. I had to remove (and reinstall) a wall of my father's garage to get the boat out. I must say that the shell is very strong construction, it was abused more than enough during transfer. The boat is now coated twice with primer and she saw daylight at last! I have to transport the boat to my summer cottage to finalaze it inside and outside. First 20 km on road and then 30 miles at sea, hopefully soon. Time spent in boat building about 1500 hrs so far. Cheers, Pete |
Re: New ECO6?
Hi Rien? Found the photos thank you. What is going one with the rudders? You can make a water trail. Also making the plywood wet. Problem is to try the plywood. Sounds good your plan. Point is making lists is a nuisance, because when you can scrap one item 2 newe emerg.? Okay, success and happy working ; Bernd

Hi Bernd, Yes, this is my ECO6. I¡¯m getting close to finishing. At the moment I¡¯m making (breaking ?) rudder foils. Next is standing the mast and rigging, some electrical wiring, fit outboard engine, and fit all the bits and pieces. Launch maybe end of September? There is a build photo page here:??Hasn¡¯t been updated for a while. Good to see you are back! Rien. On 2 Jul 2019, at 23:38, ikarus342000@... [k-designs] <k-designs@...> wrote:

Re: Build of ECO62 (houseboat) starts
With my two last posts I uploaded 10 Pics, which I can't see now on this site. The yahoo email telling me about the posts did contain the pics, so they must have been arrived. The texts alone are not very helpful. Some members of this group experienced missing pics if I recall right. |

Re: Build of ECO62 (houseboat) starts
For to turn the hulls from upright to bottom up position I place lifting slings transversal under the keel (green in the pic) and fix one side with clamps at the sheer. The other sides are hinged in the crane hooks. Then I lift the hooks slowly and the hull will slowly perform a rolling move. To prevent a hard bounce in the end phase I put cushions at the landing line and controll the move with the lifting strings. |
Re: Build of ECO62 (houseboat) starts
For lifting the hulls with the cranes I use the special nuts I embedded last year in the hulls as access points (4 per hull). I prepared 6 mm plywood strips fitting in 2 washers each (2 * 2 mm thick) and glueing a little wood strip to attach a loop of 8 mm cord. The holes for the cord are inclined a bit for to align the cord tight to the hull surface. The point is to avoid a lever when the cord is under tesion, otherwise the nuts would break out. Also the ply stripes are only constructed to take tensions in their own plane otherwise they would break. This way I used them really often to lift the hulls upright and bottom up. |
Re: Power ECO 75 Electric
My experience so far with my solar electric boat has been mostly good. I have learned from my mistakes as most people do.
I have proven in my boat, with two major trips that used 100% solar energy charging four lead acid batteries. The first in 2017 lasted 9 days and then in 2018 a trip that lasted 16 days all using 100% solar power to keep me going and to keep the battery bank charged. My biggest mistake is in too much weight in the canopy for this design of boat. That is one reason I chose the 5.5 power cat design for my next build as it has stability if I wish to go solar electric. I am not convinced yet as that direction would add about $15,000 Canadian more then if I went to a four stroke motor. You learn to find the sweet spot for performance with solar electric as I can cruise all day long at 7km/hr but I would drain the battery bank quickly if I went at 10km/hr. I will add a link on my 2017 trip where I ventured from Kingston Ont. to Ottawa Ont.along the Rideau Canal system which is listed as a world heritage site. Phil |

Hi? Hans
Because I am in full war with Windows 10 and can not find your private address anymore. Nice pictures on a typical Dutch on a nice day; You are happy with the new sail? I know the problem with a short roof on the car and a relative long boat; We had an Alfa Rome sportscar and the SC435 on it. Be careful in corners.? When I see the pictures from the Little Tri I could hit myself that I sold him. I would swap the CATAPROA with one. Not that the Cataproa is not a good sailor. But where I live and the with this long trailer, no fun. On the water it is different. Nobody believes the speed and easy handling of the boat.? Good, have fun
