Re: ECOnomy cruiser (N)egative slanted bow improvements

Bonjour Bertrand

You absolutely right. In the end you will not remember the two hours more of work for the rounded bows. I like the rounded original even better.

Cheers

Bernd

Re: ECOnomy cruiser (N)egative slanted bow improvements

Hi Bernd

Thank you for your reply.
At my eyes the original rounded version is more harmonious, less aggressive for only a few adding building works.

Help identifying a winch

Hi Berndt:

I think you? might be the person that could help me decipher my mystery winches.? I apologize is this is not about your catamaran, but is catamaran related, and france related

I have two self tailing winches in my 1985 Edelcat33 that I think are original with the boat. I want to service them but I cannot identify them. Since the boat was made in france, maybe they are Lewmar wavegrip series - they have an ST 30 and a wave drawing. The self tailing part is bolted with 3 hex bolts.

Hi Robert

Re: Sailing Eco 5.5

Hi Hamish

Thank you for thr photos and your findings. To retrieve the boat, is it not possible to have a sort of bidle to hold the boat more centerd?
Interestin is that you need both center boards this means, rogether the have the good area. With a boat with such a minimal draft you reley more on the boards and rudders. Special in drifting to leeeway.
Regarding the speed there is not much to say, There was not a lot of wind so you could not expect more speed. This changes fast with more wind. Interesting is that the boat holds course so well. I never expected that with such a short boat, and the ?resulting short distance between rudders and boards..
Coming about, again the old trick, try to pick up speed before starting the maneuvre. Gibing is going always well and again in big waves sometimes quicker and better to control. Sailing to windward same, the higher the speed the better the windward ability gets till a given point.?
You getting used to the inquiring persons. Have fun and let you time with the drwaings.
Enjoy the Summertime

Bernd

Re: Painting advise needed

Thanks Bernd!

After shopping around a bit, I finally bought a tin of??International Primocon primer and a set of?International Perfection top coat blue 216 from?12seemeilen.de. This brand seems to hold the middle ground between top quality / top?price and basic quality / low?price. I need it now already (although I started my project six weeks ago) because I am ready with the rudders and need to paint them. I will report on my experience with these products?later.

Sailing Eco 5.5

Hi all,

Well we are having a magic summer in New Zealand, especially where I live in the Bay of Plenty! However I have failed to take advantage of the weather and wind. BUT I did get out once since the launch at that was last weekend. Sailed around for 4 hours or so. On this occasion I took my wind meter.?

Started with a breeze of 6 knots, fairly steady too. Was sailing at 4 knots max. Breeze got up to 9 - 10 knots and was sailing at 6 knots. Touched 7 knots but only briefly.?

Some other observations: Launching: I am able to launch in 300mm of water with the rear rollers about 100mm out of the water and the wheels a little over 1/2 submerged, brilliant! For retrieval I need the 400mm so as to get the rear rollers at least flush with the water surface. Still having trouble with it swinging around until well up the trailer, I have had some helpers keep it straight both times, the vertical wheels on bungees helps a lot to keep the keels centered, but don't stop the back end swinging around, if there is a cross wind or tidal flow.?

Hands off sailing: I was trying to let some friends catch up in their mono hulls. So furled the jib and set the main out on the traveler. I was on a broad reach. I noticed the helm had gone completely slack. so took my hands off it. Fixed on a point on land and noticed we were sailing in a straight line. So 20 minutes passed at 2 knots boat speed and I did not touch the helm once, in fact I spent 10 minutes enjoying the view from the hatch at the bow. Very Cool!?

Still love the stable nature of the boat. Tacking I am getting better at, only had 2 tacks round back on me. Jybes magnificently.?

Center boards: played around a lot with these in some deep water. Tried one up and one down for windward work. That resulted in a lot of leeway, irrespective of leeward or windward board down. Concluded through experience best windward performance with least leeward movement is with both boards right down, I won't be shortening the Boards!?

Lastly I was a little confused with sailing to windward in the first session. I need to do more work to see how close to the wind I am sailing. I was using the wind indicator on the top of the mast, of course I realised on the second outing that it shows the apparent wind once we are moving, so I will need to either use a compass or I have heard some tape deck ribbon or wool on the side stays gives a better indication of true wind direction.?

All in all its fantastic. I have to get used to complete strangers holding me up at the boat ramp with questions, thankfully I live in a small town with not too many people.

I still intend to do the plans for the trailer and the wing seats, but they are months away not weeks! also some better sailing footage is still planned, I just have not had everything aligned to get it done.?

Regards

Hamish??

Re: ECOnomy cruiser (N)egative slanted bow improvements

Hi Bertrand

There are no improvements in respect to the rounded original bow, besides, as you mentioned, that the slanted bow is more easy to build. Waterline length, buoancy etc all the same. Deck is in the negative slant some mm longer that is all. The instruction how to build the rounded version is clearly shown in the drawings as well ass the pure negative version. So it is up to you.

Bernd

ECOnomy cruiser (N)egative slanted bow improvements

Hi Bernd

What are the improvements? get from the? rounded bow ECOnomy cruiser Original? towards the Negative slanted of the ECOnomy cruiser N, except the easier way to build ?

Is there a difference? with the water line length? and with the bow buoyancy? I don't find such informations? in the study plan neither in this Yahoo group. Perhaps I miss it, but I used the Yahoo search system without success.

Thank you for your reply to help me to decide which version to order.

Re: Painting advise needed

The tar is no paint but a prodection for the underwatership.. You was asking ,or not?
I am not married to any paint manufacturer or! When you or somebody else has good experience with a given sort of paint, tell us. A friend had to be at the start the next day for his first nonstop around the world attempt. But there was still a spot which needed light blue paint. The only shop which was still open was a sort of "penny" shop. Got the paint for Gulder 3,5 (US $ 1,3). After the world around trip there was some damage, but the paint was still in place ;-)?

Hi Robert

Yes, paint is a pain in... But general any good Polyurethan paint will do. Now do nor go to boat shops to buy the paints. There other shops who sell PU paint. It is also so different from country to country. The last time I was buying PU paint in the Netherlands (last year) it was if I record correct € 42,- per KG. More or less the same paint I was buying in Spain for € 25,-. So it is very difficult to give prices for paint for different countries. It would be good if builders from different countries would share there findings, give hints and addresses.?
As tar you need wood tar! if you have found them mixing relation is 50% tar, 50% Epoxy. This will be the base. Hardener as for 100% Epoxy! Fused silica about as much as necessary to get a thick paint like consistence for a smooth surface.

Cheers

Bernd

Re: Painting advise needed

Hi, I do not know about this tar paint.
I have used normal car and truck paint which work a lot better than the PU paint I used on my first boat. I am talking about two part paint used as instructed.

Re: Painting advise needed

Hi Bernd (or any other member who feels qualified to answer my question??),

I accept your?advice that DD Lack is a good solution for the last paint layers above water.?
However, when googling?for it I I found a bewildering variety of brands and manufacturers.?
And some of them do look like "money machines for the?producers" to me, for instance Epifanes?sells a 750 cc tin for EUR 53!

So, would you have a concrete advice which Brand to use?

Then on the epoxy/tar mixture to be used as antifouling. Sounds also like a good idea. But what type of tar should I use (manufacturer, brand..) and where can I get it??

Thanks in advance!

Robert
