Re: help with DUO425

Hi Burk
I have the plans. The maximum sail area should be 2x8 square meters.
I'm shopping aroun right now and would say that for a new rig the cost
is around 1200 Euro if not buying top notch stuff (one can easily go
over 2000 Euros).

hello Burk,
The costs of the sails depents in which country you have to order them.
Optimum sail size between 8.3 and 8.9m2. We have an e-commerce address
in Germany. The ask for a 8.3m2 sail Euro 358,-. The send the sails to
any destination in the world.
The mast position is correct for the modern sails.

What the heck is a linear sander?

One of the works which have to be repeated often when working in
the
wood/glass Epoxy system and even more so when working with foam
sandwich system.
The most important tool is a very good sander. Epoxy gets
thermoplast
again above about 75 degree Celsius. Which means, when you use an
ordinary oscillating sander which vibrates 20000 times or more a
minute and the wrong sanding paper, the only effect you get is
clocked
sand paper.
So which sander is the best for this ?
We use a linear sander which has a 5mm rotating movement and a
rotation speed between 2000 to 6000 revolution. As sanding paper we
use Aluminum oxide paper (grain 85 and to finish 120).
This sanding paper will not clock as easily as normal sanding
paper.
It last about 8 times as long also. By the slow rotation of the
sander
the Epoxy will not get thermoplast . This machines work whit
almost no
manual pressure. The are not cheap but worth every penny.
The relative new orbital sanders are not bad also. But you have to
hold them absolute parallel to the working surface. Otherwise you
get
immediately marks which have to be filled again.
Preparing a perfect putty will help also to easy the work. This
will
be a story for an other time.

hello,
I'm going to order the DUO 425 plans and i want to get an idea of the
costs of the sails, masts etc. Can anyone tell me the size of the
windsurfing sails used on these boats?
Is the boat balanced around the older triangle style rig or the newer
rectangular style rig? or both

Thanks,
Burk

About the P95 design:
I really like this design, it is a perfect bridge between a beach
catamaran and a world cruiser. I also considered the following
designs:

Stiletto 30
Naval force 3: Piana 30
Malcolm Tennant: Portage 10
Schionning: Radical bay 800 (it is closer to a Duo-800 )
Kurth Hughes Sailing Design: 30' Catamaran
Kendrick: Siren 950
Woods: Windsong
ADN-Levievre: 4xcat 28 (very close to the P95)

But in the end, the ease of construction and the quick build time
were the major points that led me to choose the P95 design. Also I
really like the asymmetrical hulls and the overall simplicity of
the
design. It is an modern Manu Kai catamaran

This is going to be my first build but I am planning to include
some
changes in the design:

First and major change, I will keep the bulkheads and structure in
wood but the exterior hull and deck will be in Corecell foam with
vinylester resin instead of marine plywood

I want to have a kick-up rudder system. Probably with a cassette
and
include some stairs on the rear transom

I will include a bowsprit and redesign all of the front aluminium
beams and have it professionally built.

I will change the outboard motor bracket from wood to aluminium.

About me:

I have been sailing beach catamaran for more than 10 years and I
used
to be windsurfing as well.

I did work in many shipyards on repairs, conversions or
construction
big commercial ships: Ore carrier, ice breakers, tugs,
commercial
fishing boats, aluminium RIB.

I have a weblog but it is in French so far. Once I start to work
on
the P95, I will translate it to English

Hi everybody,

My name is Wolfgang, german multihull sailor, living in Brasil on the

the fina fase of building a DUO425, which is my first boat building
experience. and what an amazing experience it is - i just love it.
So i?m very pleased about the founding of this group and hope for

I have a major advantage. I manage a mini-storage so there is
always space for workshops and projects. This is what has made it
possible to take on the building projects I have going.
