What's your preferred guitar strings for a jazz arch top?
37
I like my GB-10 very much. It is highly playable and sounds good. It is not really prone to feedback due to it's heavier construction. I think it is a bit more versatile than a standard "jazz guitar". Sort of like the man himself, it covers a lot of territory. Here is a picture of George, playing MY GB-10 when he came out to see our band play on Maui. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=24588632935&set=t.718057935&type=3

Chord question
5
Hi everybody, A friend of mine (not a guitar player) wrote a song that has a chord with these notes in it: E-F-G-B-D. He called it an Em7b9, and when I saw that I told him that wasn't "right", since to the best of my knowledge a b9 isn't an "accepted" extension of a minor 7th chord. I suggested he rename it G7/E, does anybody have any other possibilities? TIA. Cheers, JV Juan Vega

Horizontal vs Vertical Fretboard?
10
#poll-notice
A new poll has been created: So I was chatting with an old guitar buddy and we got into a discussion about Vertical and Horizontal playing on the Fretboard. He calls 1st string (E) from 1st Fret to 15th Fret (G ) Horizontal when I've always called call Vertical. For me Horizontal is playing across the neck from 6th String to 1st String. So just for fun and out of interest what do you call 1st string (E) from 1st Fret to 15th Fret (G) on same string? 1. Horizontal 2. Vertical Vote Now Do not reply to this message to vote in the poll. You can vote in polls only through the group's website.

In 2009, a jazz guitarist from Maryland died in a plane crash. His music lives on.

In 2009, a jazz guitarist from Maryland died in a plane crash. His music lives on. The Washington Post Fifty lives were lost when Colgan Air Flight 3407 crashed outside of Buffalo on Feb. 12, 2009. Among them were two members of *Chuck Mangione’s* band: saxophonist *Gerry Niewood* and guitarist *Coleman Mellett*. Mellett, a 1992 graduate of DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, left behind hundreds of hours of recordings he’d made in the New Jersey home he shared with his wife, jazz singer *Jeanie Bryson*. “He was up there in our studio, banging these things out, year after year,” Bryson said. “They were never completed.” Suddenly it seemed like they might never be. In some cases the music amounted to snippets: multiple takes of different sections of different songs, some recorded in digital formats that were no longer so easy to access. The story of the resurrection of the 34-year-old Mellett’s music is detailed in “Sing You a Brand New Song,” ( https://singyouabrandnewsong.com ) a documentary screening Thursday night at the AFI Silver Theatre. https://wapo.st/2IgfQTX

Free scores

Here's a free collection of 2500 arrangements for solo guitar: classical, jazz (chord melody and Brazilian), folk, and some pop (especially Beatles), by a number of gifted arrangers including Howard Heitmeyer and Yves Keroas (whose arrangements are designated by "HH" and "YK" in the title). They are in the Tabledit format, and can be read, played and printed using the free TEFView reader for Mac, Windows, Android and iOS. Standard notation, tablature or both can be displayed. Tempo is adjustable. When you play a piece a cursor follows the music and a fretboard diagram shows finger placement, to aid in learning. A user group at /g/tabledit has tech support, in the unlikely event you need it. TablEdit files can also be read by some versions of Guitar Pro, TuxEdit, and other programs. The pieces are at: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1dp_n4yjWVUdOAHctrkcVdn5797us8MEe The TEFView reader is at: http://www.tabledit.com/tefview/ A manual for TEFView, which is barely necessary, is at: http://www.tabledit.com/tefview/uses.shtml Enjoy, John R.

Pent Up House

#Improv
#SonnyRollins
Can we discuss Pent Up House for a second? In regards to playing this tune, a guy teaching it whose opinion I respect has said that he's always played this Sonny Rollins tune with the "blowing changes", as listed in a couple of Real Books, which are Am7 - D7 - GMaj7 - - Am7 - D7 - GMaj7 - - Dm7 - G7 - Cm7 - F7 - Am7 - D7 - GMaj7 - - However, the changes over the melody seem to be CMaj7/D - D7(b9,#5) - CMaj7/D - D7(b9,#5) - GMaj9 - Ab9 - GMaj9 - - CMaj7/D - D7(b9,#5) - CMaj7/D - D7(b9,#5) - GMaj9 - Ab9 - GMaj9 - Dm7 - G7(b9, #5) - Cm9 - F13 - Dm7 - G7(b9, #5) - Cm9 - F13 - GMaj9 - Ab9 - GMaj9 - - I can see that both sets of changes are similar, but it sounds to me like Rollins sticks to the posted changes. I haven't heard much of other versions of the tune. Is it standard procedure to the more vanilla "blowing changes" for the whole tune? Anyone else do this?

George Benson Method Books

#GeorgeBenson
Since the jazz guitar group has moved, I thought I would do a try-out post about something topical with the new set up. So did anybody buy any of the new George Benson Method books written with Peter Farrell about his jazz guitar method and, if so, what were they like? The books were available early just for one week - they will be officially launched at an unknown date next year. They are quite expensive - I just bought the chapter about picking technique in one of the books since it's a topic I became interested in - or maybe a bit obsessed about - recently, William

Remembering “Zeek” Duff
3
Larry G. “Zeek” Duff 12/27/1946-4/18/2019 Zeek was a long time member of this Jazz discussion group, all around good player and great guy. He made lots on contributions, in particular and notably on Lenny Breau. Over the period of time he contributed, I got to know him pretty well. Somewhere in the distant past I remember telling him that his last name Duff was Scottish and in Scottish Gaelic dubh means "dark", it was term used in the past often for those from Pictish descent who had dark skin, he got a kick out of that. My last contact with him was just a few days before he died. At that time he was telling me how after Yahoo had basically destroyed this jazz guitar discussion group with Neo, he’d ended up contributing to Quora.com. Over the period time he’d answered so many questions on many subjects that he was surprised to learn he’d just been nominated for Quora’s Top Writers program, which publicly recognizes individuals who had made especially valuable content contributions to the site. I can’t find the tribute I wrote for him at the time, but in lieu of it, here’s Zeek in his own words, RIP: Zeek: “60+ years of playing guitar. I don’t know where some of these descriptions come from like “Master of MIDI Recording.” I’ve never said that, although it’s mostly true. I’m a professional musician, have been for 50+ years, primarily on guitar (played for 10 years before become a full-time pro), but I also play bass and keyboards and I use MIDI a lot. I learned to read music on cornet in grade school, but haven’t played a cornet or trumpet in years. I’ve played in huge concerts and recorded with some notable artists in major studios, and I performed live for most of my career. But, I had to retire from performing due to my back 24 years ago. I still play & record in my home studio called “The Blue Wall Studio” and my production company is called “WHAT!Productions!” that I created in 1988.” From: https://www.quora.com/profile/Zeek-Duff “LG ”Zeek” Duff - Guitarist, Composer, Arranger, Recording Artist, MIDI Expert (applied Musical Instrument Digital Interface), and Performer - with over 50 years of experience playing and recording professionally with noteworthy artists and his own aggregations, featuring a broad variety of styles, original compositions, and arrangements of familiar popular music. While Zeek’s music industry experience includes years of doubling on keyboard synthesizers and bass guitar, he is now focused on recording and performing Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar.” From: https://musicians.allaboutjazz.com/zeekduff Other Zeek sites: http://www.zeekduff.com/About_Me.html https://twitter.com/zeekduff -A -- Alisdair MacRae Birch Guitarist/Bassist/Educator/Arranger http://www.alisdair.com https://twitter.com/alisdairbirch http://www.linkedin.com/in/alisdairmacraebirch
