RIP: Vic Juris

#RIP
Vic Juris was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago, and unfortunately died today. I was fortunate to have heard him perform a couple of times over the years and he was a great player. I don't know enough about him to give a more detailed comment, but I thought the list would want to know that he passed. Rick Goosenberg

Remembering Dave Woods
6
Three years ago, just before Christmas 2016 Dave Woods died. Unfortunately he slipped on some ice and really tumbled badly, hitting his head. At the time I wrote a tribute to him with a brief obituary. I have cut and pasted it below as I never posted at the time in this group. RIP: Dave Woods, Guitarist & all around good guy! I'm very sadden hear of the passing of Dave Woods. Many years ago I met Dave on the Internet and we struck up an online friendship. During the 60's and 70's David Woods worked as a guitarist, arranger, and record producer in New York City. He worked for Polydor, Verve Forecast Records, and Decca Records, Dave worked with artists such as McKendree Spring, Dave Van Ronk, Scott Fagan and Bobby Vinton. Dave also ran his own publishing company Callicoon Music ASCAP. Dave was deeply involved in the social problems of his community, he conducted Jazz and Blues guitar workshops in Green Haven Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison. Through music, he tried to keep the kids out of jail, and if they got there, he tried to give them something to use when they were released. "Music," as Dave would say "is also a journey within if you're never going to get out." My father had met and work with his father the late great song writer Harry M. Woods. Harry was one of the great songwriters, "When the Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobin Along", "I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover", "Try A Little Tenderness", and many many more. Sadly, in the last few years Dave and his not profit "Music to Light" in Poughkeepsie, New York which helped inner city kids how to create music, struggled financially, because of the lack of Royalties from his father's great songs. He was suffering like many musicians today from Big Techs wealth transference from those of us who create to Big Tech. Just look around there are many illegal uploads and non-licensed versions of his fathers songs. This is the legacy of Big Tech. RIP: Dave. Sad to hear of your passing. -A -- Alisdair MacRae Birch Guitarist/Bassist/Educator/Arranger http://www.alisdair.com https://twitter.com/alisdairbirch http://www.linkedin.com/in/alisdairmacraebirch

Pioneering guitarist Arty McGlynn has died aged 75 Arty McGlynn was born in Omagh, County Tyrone, Ireland. When he was eleven, his mother got him a guitar and he began to explore the world of jazz which appealed to his natural creativity. Influenced by recordings of virtuoso guitarists such as Wes Montgomery and Barney Kessel, Arty rapidly developed an accomplished technique and style that saw him playing professionally with bands by the time he was fifteen. In addition to his solo work, he collaborated with different notable groups such as Patrick Street, Planxty, Four Men and a Dog, De Dannan and the Van Morrison Band. He played guitar on the critically acclaimed 1989 Van Morrison album, Avalon Sunset. He also played duo performances and recordings with uilleann piper Liam O'Flynn, and his wife, fiddle player Nollaig Casey. http://bit.ly/2M8uSgu

Talking of books, has anyone looked at or used Masaya Yamaguchi's books that I've seen on Amazon? https://www.amazon.com/Masaya-Yamaguchi/ His books on Miles and Coltrane looking interesting and his other self produced books too but they are probably above my pay grade. The diagrams he uses I can't figure out. Any insights or comments? Tom

Self-Promotion Posts

Hi everybody, This is part test, part self-promotion, hope that's cool. I've been playing and teaching guitar (everything from rock/pop, funk, r&b, jazz, and classical) for more than 40 years & I've written a short book that addresses new ways to approach harmony and chord construction primarily for jazz guitar. It's called "Loosening the Grip" and is available on Amazon. Please have a look; if you apply this material it should give you some fresh new ideas as to how to address playing changes and comping: https://www.amazon.com/Loosening-Grip-approach-building-harmony/dp/1985239353/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Loosening+the+grip+vega&qid=1575425710&sr=8-1 Cheers, JV Juan Vega

Eddie Duran, SF’s go-to jazz guitarist, dies at 94 Sam Whiting November 26, 2019 Updated: November 29, 2019, 8:25 am "In the 1950s, the jazz giant Charlie “Bird” Parker came to San Francisco for a series of concerts. The bebop sax genius had his pick of local sidemen and picked Eddie Duran, a Mexican American who had taught himself to play Latin jazz on guitar in order to join a family combo. That stint with Bird solidified Duran as a go-to guitarist and he ended up performing and recording with saxmen Stan Getz and Paul Desmond, and pianists George Shearing and Vince Guaraldi. Benny Goodman took him on an international tour that included three shows in Carnegie Hall, with Duran also playing a solo." http://bit.ly/2Y6m53O

Jerry Bergonzi: Vol. 3 Jazz Lines

#Scales
Anyone work through this book? It's mainly Bergonzi's take on the Bebop scale, with tunes derivative of Bebop tunes such as Blues For Alice, Joy Spring, etc. For minor key tunes, he uses IV7b9b13. Any idea as to why he prefers this to an altered dominant? No lowered 5th or raised 11th? Apparently he's preferring The Harmonic Minor scale? For example, he's got Cm69 Bebop scale, leading to F7b9b13. Why?

Update Profile
2
Chuck 开云体育 is new to me, but lets see if we can figure this out. The first thing I see is that with groups.io your profile information is controlled solely by you (currently, I believe moderators can't edit your profile) and each group you are a member of on group.io, can have a diffent profile, in other words you can customize your profile for each group you are subscribed to. You have a main account profile and individual profiles for each group you are subscribed to. Changes made to your main account profile will automatically apply to each group profile, with the exception of those specific fields in each group profile that you've previously customized. I am assuming you are editiing your profile by either: 1/ Going to the top right drop-down box, Clicking on Account>Identity>then either your Main Profile or your Jazz-Guitar Group Profile or: 2/ Clicking on Subscription>Group Profile>Edit Group Profile (That's your Jazz-Guitar Group Profile) Next: Did you upload the picture by dragging the image to profile photo or by browsing to a file on your computer? Check to see that you have set your profile privacy to "Other members of your group" If it's still not working, perhaps there's some glitch? ? If so, what does the error message exactly say and when does it occur? I'll have to investigate further. -A

End of an Era: Yahoo will delete all Yahoo Groups content on December 14th
9
Folks It's the end of an era.... Yahoo's former CEO Marissa Mayer effectively destroyed Yahoo groups back in 2013, 'WTF! MORONS!' Yahoo! Groups! redesign! traumatises! users! ? The Register http://bit.ly/2OVFQbG continued her destruction of Yahoo successfully driving it into the ground to the point where she could leave in 2017 the shell of the company to be acquired by Altaba/Verizon, who unable to save the wreck on October 2, 2019 ceased trading on the Nasdaq at the close of the day. So it comes of no surprise that Yahoo who previously bought and destroyed GeoCities, Yahoo! Pulls Plug on GeoCities, Erases Internet History - TIME http://bit.ly/2OYq7si have made the decision to no longer allow users to upload content to the Yahoo Groups site. Beginning October 21, you won't be able to upload any more content to the site, and as of December 14 all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed. You'll have until that date to save anything you've uploaded. More information about that decision: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups/SLN31010.html As archivist Jason Scott told Time: “These guys found the way to destroy the most massive amount of history in the shortest amount of time with absolutely no recourse”. I am hoping that we will be able to archive the group before then, even if only for historical purposes. -A -- AlisdairMacRae Birch Guitarist/Bassist/Educator/Arranger http://www.alisdair.com https://twitter.com/alisdairbirch http://www.linkedin.com/in/alisdairmacraebirch
