Re: best Rock gtr. solo of all time

Amos Garrett's solo on Midnight at the Oasis comes to mind as the best I ever heard on a rock tune (if it's a rock tune).

Otherwise it's Carlos Santana, and the name of the tune just slipped my mind.

Not fair. Can't pick just one. Break it down into smaller categories. Then I'll bite. :)

Re: Picks

Hi Brian, My solo guitar style concept is similar to Tuck Andress. I'm
trying to cover bass, chords and melody at the same time and I don't play
many single note lines. Similar to Martin Taylor in that way as well.
I play a combination of standards, pop tunes, reggae, Latin, R+B and a
few light classical type guitar pieces. Basically anything I like. I even
do a solo guitar version of Billie Jean.
The Cool Jazz picks I prefer are the Heavy version which are 1.5 mm. I
use them until the sandpaper wears off, but I have never seen them
without it. The material is similar to some Sadowsky and Clayton picks
I've had in the past. They are white "juratex".

I guess I'd fall into category 1... I play 100% fingerstyle, but I most of the time, I use a thumbpick.

3. Finger Style - 25% (more Plectrum)

4. Finger Style - 10% (mostly Plectrum)

6. Plectrum - 50% (half Finger Style)

8. Plectrum - 10% (mostly Finger Style)

Re: Picks

Scott,

I'll say right up front that there is no way I could do a 4 hour solo gig. Were you singing or is that all guitar and is it all jazz? I just played a duo gig with a bassist that was four hours and that was hard enough both physically and artistically. I can do three hours but two would be my personal limit. After that that is just more solo jazz guitar than I want to hear myself. If it is mixed with light classical I could see that but other than that I just don¡¯t like to hear that much solo jazz guitar. Most of the guys that do it by playing the melody and then do two choruses of unaccompanied single line solos usually bore me. I think playing solo guitar takes more than that but that's just how I feel about it.

No matter what I think I would love to hear your approach to a four hour solo gig.

I'd also like to know how thick those Cool Jazz Picks are that you use and if the ones without the sandpaper are the same but just without the sandpaper.

Some of you might commensurate with me on this one. I played a 4 hour
solo guitar gig last night (playing fingerstyle) with only a 15 minute
break and no more than a few seconds between tunes. Almost all
chord/melody/bass style with a minimum of single lines.
Still, that is a lot of guitar playing!
Peace,
Scott

Finger Style has so many advantages over plectrum .... no argument
at all. In
fact, after a year and a half on finger style I am beginning to hear
voicings
and harmonies that the plectrum method brushes over instead out
"picking" out
....

Re: Finger Style and/or Plectrum

Dave Woods

I can play straight finger style, but I don't like just fingers for single
line melody. I prefer the pick. I like the tone and the mobility much
better.

However, when you're playing single line there's very little movement with
the pick, it's a very close excursion. Comping with your single line,
throwing in chords, forces you to make a much wider excursion with the pick
in the middle of a single line phrase to throw in a chord. Also the right
hand has to recover from the wide excursion, in order to get back to the
single line.

In playing single line with the pick, and plucking chords with the pick and,
2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers, there's no wide excursion to recover from. It's
a very compact process, and your melody picking never gets out of line.

In strumming rhythm the pick is best. Yes the Flamenco players play
fantastic finger style rhythms, and the Bossa and other Latin players too,
but they'll never make in the Basie Band.

This is my meaning where 50 / 50 is concerned.

I don't normally say much on here.

But - Picks intrigue me.

I have never found a pick - I'm totally happy with.

The closest - is the Gibson larger teardrop size - heavy (or Ex Heavy) -
which for some unknown reason - they've stopped making - and I have about 4
well worn ones left !!

After researching the link about the 'cool picks' that someone put up at
Elderleys I found these

GRISMAN "DAWG" PICK II

<>

Now, they look great!! _ I think I could get into them !

Re: Fingerstyle

I Much prefer 'just fingers' - I can't possibly play something like 'You Go
To My Head' with a pick

It sounds awful.

Does anyone else here - turn picks around - and use the back edge or side
edge ??

I find I always do that - It's so much more warmer - for solo line playing.

Thoughts ??

Pretty much fingerstyle only for me.

Question - what do you mean by things like fingerstyle 50%? Were you
thinking people who play some tunes fingersytle and some with a pick,
or those people who palm the pick so that they can play 1/2 the song
with fingers and then switch to a pick for half?
