Re: Performers adjust to gig-less New Year’s Eve
Hi Alisdair,
Yes, the Vallejoan is a “Star Trek” fanI always knew I liked her for something! ;-) I love her playing, though, and always have. I parked myself in front of the tv, and channel-surfed to see which artists were doing what (by videos, of course.). And, IMO, the night's winner was.... .... .... (waiting for drum roll) .... Lee Ann Rimes! While some may fault her for the 'disco-esque' influence on her tunes, her performance (all produced, of course) kicked-ass. Her voice had taken on a new depth, and she seemed much more comfortable with her showmanship. She's been through a lot, and it was good seeing her again, for sure! -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. |
Re: Jazz Standard in New York City Closes Doors for Good
‘Mostly Hard Times’: How NYC’s Jazz Clubs Are Hanging On "It’s been a lifetime since places like the Three Deuces, Club Carousel, and the Downbeat draped West 52nd Street in neon, and in the time since, the number of clubs maintaining New York’s status as the gigging, beating heart of the jazz world had dwindled to a resilient core —?even before the pandemic put the city’s most prominent live art on pause. With the closure of the Jazz Standard announced this week, the community has lost another gem: a large but charismatic venue considered a prestige destination for artists and audiences alike, one with top-dollar pay drawing top-tier talent like the Maria Schneider Orchestra and the weekly Mingus Big Band." |

Performers adjust to gig-less New Year’s Eve
Performers adjust to gig-less New Year’s Eve New Year’s Eve used to be prosperous for jazz guitarist Mimi Fox. This time around, it’s live long and prosper. Yes, the Vallejoan is a “Star Trek” fan — and that’s what she said she’ll be watching Thursday. “Hopefully, next year, I’ll be playing a fantastic gig somewhere,” Fox said. The acclaimed musician can’t remember a New Year’s Eve she didn’t work...

Does anyone in this group.io own a Peerless Songbird, their Epiphone Casino clone? A dumb decision I made 15 years ago was to sell my 1963 Epiphone Casino that I bought new with my paper route earnings when I was 12 years old.? In 2005 a guy from LA Guitar Center flashed $2,000 cash in my face and I grabbed it.? I openly admit to being an idiot.? To replace that vintage guitar today will cost me $4000 - $5000.? Over the past few years I've played the new Chinese made Epiphone Casinos and they just do not like them.? So if you have a Peerless Songbird, can I get your opinion??

Hi Rob,
If you have a soundpost installed bet'n the top & the back under the bridge that should take care of the feedback issue. When I got my Epi Howard Roberts many years ago it was completely unplayable for exactly that reason. My tech put the soundpost in and that made it an amazing guitar.

I think a little of the problem was on my part rushing through the installation procedure Yes there still a lot of bells and whistles that come with this program but for the cost, it is well worth it. Another thing, I have an Ibanez ag 75 bs hollow body, and when I first got it didn't know that it would fed back so bad at high volumes. I guess this is the nature of the beast so now I just make sure my hand is on the stings .?how you guys handle this problem?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? thnks rob !?

Re: Chord question
I'd agree then to call it an E something rather than G7/6 -which would mislead/confuse me more than Em7b9 (which I agree is against all the rules (:)? if I saw it in a chart. I'd be interested to know which note(s) the melody emphasizes during the 2 beats or whatever the Em7b9 is tagged for. That would help me understand what to think about/play with when learning the tune. I'd be tempted to think of that F as a suspension of a C chord, but take pains to omit the C.

Re: Chord question
Peter,
No; the progression is EbMaj7 the "E" chord then FMaj9. I see it as a chromatic passing chord more than a "functional" anything. And I totally agree, "context matters".

Chord question
Hi everybody,
A friend of mine (not a guitar player) wrote a song that has a chord with these notes in it: E-F-G-B-D. He called it an Em7b9, and when I saw that I told him that wasn't "right", since to the best of my knowledge a b9 isn't an "accepted" extension of a minor 7th chord. I suggested he rename it G7/E, does anybody have any other possibilities? TIA.
Cheers,
JV

Re: What's your preferred guitar strings for a jazz arch top?
There used to be a college professor on here I believe that was in South Carolina. He mailed me some CDs many many years ago that I never got, and I would like to do something for him. Does anyone know how I can contact him?

Just a quick tip over minor 2-5-1.? ? In a minor key, for example, in Dm key, Gm or BbMaj7 arpeggio are often played over Em7b5 which is iim7b5 and Bbm against A7 creating altered sound. Enclosure(chromatic patterns) will also create nice bebop sound. I hope you find it helpful. Chao! ? ? |

Hi everyone,?
I just wanted to share 8th note swing feel minor 2-5-1 ideas. You will hear substitutions, enclosures and some signature bebop lines. I hope you find it helpful. Peace. |
