Re: Jazz Duets - Suggestions

Brad Rabuchin

Bugs Bower has a book. I think it's called "Bop duets" or something like
that. It's 2 lines in treble clef and it's not too hard.

Re: Jazz Duets - Suggestions

Mark,

There's a book of Joe Pass & Herb Ellis guitar duets which is pretty cool. I have it somewhere, it's probably out of print...

Cheers,

I am looking for some good books of jazz duets.

I am thinking along the lines of two guitar lines, or bass and guitar lines, or sax or trumpet and guitar over some standards. Something that will be fun, help my reading, something that I can play with friends.

Any suggestions?

Mark

Re: Solo clip

Hello Juan,

Very nice. I really enjoyed hearing you play. Very tasteful phrasing and melodic playing. Great combination of single lines and chord comps. Thanks for sharing.

Hi all,

Here's a short clip of a gig I did last week. The tune's a blues I wrote
called "Takin' It Out"; it starts with my sax player, Vic Estrada's solo,
and then goes into my solo. At least I got through the turnaround at the
end before the video cuts out.

My band plays at an old dive bar in Glendale, CA, USA every 2nd Monday, and
this time we got some video:

Comments, etc, welcome. The sound/video is just OK, but these guys are
great players, the clip doesn't do 'em justice...

Cheers,
JV

RIP: Hotep Galeta, Pianist

OBITUARY: Hotep Galeta (1941-2010)

LEGENDARY South African jazz pianist and former East London resident Hotep Galeta died at his Johannesburg home yesterday morning after suffering an asthma attack.

His wife Angela said the 69-year-old had been an asthmatic since childhood but had managed to control it during his lifetime.
"He was not showing any signs of not being well recently and I couldn't believe it when he started getting sick this morning (yesterday). I called the ambulance but it took time to arrive and when it did he had already passed away," said Angela.

The Cape Town-born Galeta lived in East London for years before moving to Johannesburg in July last year to start a new life with his family.
Mdantsane guitarist Lulama Gaulana said the country had lost a legend. Since 1992, Gaulana was a regular bassist at many of Galeta's gigs in the Eastern Cape.
"This is sad news for me.
"We were expecting a lot from him, especially when he left East London last year to join Hugh (Masekela) at Downtown Music Hub.
"One of his dreams was to start a jazz academy for underprivileged children.
"He tried here in East London, which resulted in the birth of the Miriam Makeba Performing Arts Centre under the banner of Fort Hare.
"He left us too soon," said Gaulana.
Galeta, born Cecil Barnard, started playing music in Cape Town at the age of seven.
His father taught him basic keyboard skills and by the 1950s his interest in jazz music grew when he befriended Abdullah Ibrahim, who later became his mentor.
He went on to establish himself as a pianist and played with the likes of Dudu Pokwana, Letta Mbulu, Hugh Masekela, Johnny Gertze, and George Kussel .
In 1960 he left South Africa for London, and later New York, and during this period received a scholarship to study music privately with renowned jazz piano educator John Mehegan.

Galeta recorded 18 CDs, and at the time of his death he was serving as a board member for the Downtown Music Hub.
He is survived by his wife and five children. - By LINDILE SIFILE

Artists Speak Out: The creator has no value?

Artists Speak Out: Can we afford to have a country where the creator has no value?
Wednesday, November 10th, 2010 by Lucinda M. Dugger

Musician Angell Monisa wrote the Obama Administration declaring that

Personal devices such as I-pods and mobile phones are not free.
Computers are not free.
Internet Service is not free.
The distribution of content is not free.
Building a website is not free.
Content should not be free.

She has worked hard to become a successful classical and studio musician, and she has recorded with a number of well-known musicians. Yet, she says that "If we are not willing to pay for content, then the content (product) has no value. The creator has no value. Can we afford to have a country where the creator has no value?"

1070s Ibanez "Artiste" semi

Will

Had an older 1970s Ibanez for repair this week.

What a superb guitar! 335 style but with one humbucker
coil tapped - so it really would be more like a 355 style.

Both humbuckers were potted with resin and had a coil
tap on the treble unit. The vol and tone pots were encased
in a rubber surround - protecting the track.

Played and sounded just like a Gibson and far superior to
current Ibanez units I have tried. There are two on ebay
right now - although these are later models than the one I
just services they look pretty good.

Rikki did enjoy the concret very much. She didn't mention the bass trombone
playing but she said that she did have a very enjoyable evening. And she
appreciated that youmentioned her on this group.

Re: Advantages of iTunes

John Amato

... this may seem a bit off the thread, but it's an iTunes commentary ....

I can't count the times I've downloaded an mp3 (or whole CD) from them and had
problems with certain tunes not downloading -- with error messages that the file
was corrupted, etc, etc. ... OK, but they took my bucks .... when I contacted
iTunes about the problem, they usually take @ a week or more to solve it, and
many times it did not get resolved ...

On a brighter and more positive tone, I've been using Amazon's MP3 Downloader
for a few years now, and have never once had a downloading problem ... and their
mp3s are generally less bucks than iTunes .....
