It's his Gibson Country Gent he's playing there at 1:24, not the Gretsch. :-)

His friends and family say he never played the Gretsch after he signed with Gibson. He may even have still preferred the D'Angelico.

Here's what his best friend and rhythm player of 25 years said (copying directly from a forum posting):

"I remember one time, after he went with Gibson, saying to him something about recording with the old Country Gentleman and he didn't want to. I think he felt it was dishonest to use it after going with Gibson. One day, years after he went with Gibson, and I was playing a Gibson Country Gentleman too, I was over at his office and I said,
" You know Chet, that Gibson Country Gentleman doesn't have as good of tone as your old Gretsch Country Gentleman." He replied "Well, don't tell anybody."
I think he knew but it was too late to do anything about it. Even later on, When Chet was recording the "Almost Alone" CD, I went out one day to play on the tune Maybelle. We got to talking and he was upset with Gibson about something that day and he made the remark " If they aren't careful I'll start playing my D'Angelico again."

I'm glad he didn’t. I didn’t much care for the tone of that D'Angelico, but I never heard it live.

I really like that fedora. What a beauty. With the scarf... Wow what
a combo! Very Italian.
He always had a great guitar sound whenever I heard him.

Re: Portable reverb unit for Polytone Mini Brute?

I use a Boss ME50. I generally like its reverb better than the amp's reverb (except for my 1964 Ampeg). That includes various Roland, Fender and Polytone amps.

I also have a Korg PX5D. I don't recommend it.

Somebody I trust praised the TC Electronics reverb.

I have this Polytone Mini Brute amp, the one with the big speaker, I think it is 14". Anyway the reverb is shot on it. Otherwise it has a very good strong clean sound with good bass response. The reverb makes all kinds of high pitch distorted sounds when I try to use it.

Is there any good small external reverb unit that you guys would suggest to use with this amp? It would actually be nice to have a digital delay as well but that could come separately in a foot pedal.

I used to have one of those Boss digital delay/digital reverb combo stomp boxes years ago that I used with a small Fender amp and the reverb always seemed to thin out the tone of my Es175.

Is there something cheap I could find used on EBay that sounds good?

Buying an Epiphone can be a lottery nowadays.

Some are good and others not so - depending upon
where they are made, I have seen real variation
in quality.

The better Epis were made by Samick so their guitars
are a better bet check out..

Hi,
I have recently bought an Epiphone Dot left-handed, but am actually a bit
disapointed with it.

As i'm about to sell it to buy another guitar, i'd like to call for your advice
on the matter. My choice is quite limited, because:

1 - I'm left-handed;

2 - I Live in Portugal, i've got very few options in music stores; unless i
order it from the Internet;

3 - My budget for it is up to 600-700$, not more.

What i'd like is something similar to an ES-175 in shape, not, for instance
another 335 kind of model.

What do you suggest in terms of a) models and b) places to buy in the
Internet / music stores that sell on-line and can ship to Portugal ?

thanks and kind regards,

André Rodrigues

You might consider taking a look at or contacting Kurt at

He is very conscientious and quick to respond. He has had archtops on
his site don't know about now. These are chinese knockoffs. The
higher priced less pauls are highly regarded on the Les Paul forum.

Gibson Classic Les Paul 57s

Anyone have experience with this pickup? They are a C note on the gear slut pages. Are they what they claim? Got a chinese cheapie and the neck pu is muddy sounding compared to a real non vintage LP I heard a while back.

Re: hand exerciser

If you experience stiffness, as Will did, you need to exercise in
the opposite direction.
I think Dave experienced some stiffness with his program too.
Changing hands didn't help either.

Also thank for the info on the vid.

Re: Portable reverb unit for Polytone Mini Brute?

Hi John,
I was thinking about a digital reverb and that price is what I was
looking at and I want a delay with it...
You're welcome.

I have a REX-50, and the reverb is quite good compared to digital
reverbs, and it's got presets - "hall", "room", "gated", "reverse", &c.
Each has parameters so you can customize it if you want to, but I pretty
much went with the defaults. They can all be assigned to their own
program number (so you can even make, say, 2 different "hall" reverb
patches), and it is midi-controllable. In its time, the Yamaha digi8tal
reverbs were considered the best (in that price range - around $600 new
- it ain't a Lexicon).

Thinking about it, a Midiverb is probably cheap now also, if you like
their sound (I think they suck chow).

What I don't remember, though, is if delay and reverb can be combined
nto one program patch. Most of the combinations have to do with
distortion plus "something else", and the distortion sounds are pretty
typical. I'll see if I can look it up for you, but I'm running out now.

The Zoom G1K (the "Brazilian Kiko Loureiro "version of the G1, or so it
says. The only difference I can tell is that it's green) is pretty good
also, and extremely reasonably priced. I bought one for my nephew, and
ended up getting one for myself as well - it paid for itself the first
time I used it.. There you can mix and match just about anything you
want and assign patch names as well, but no midi. It's also got some
drums, and battery (4xAA) life is around 4 solid hours (I use mine
outside sometimes). Not perfect, but really handy - my Moose amp can
sound a little dry without something, and on the sidewalk in NYC, it's
more than fine. I haven't tried it in a club or closed environment, but
I have very little doubt that it would sound fine. They also make a
G1-usb for around $100, but I know nothing about it.

At around $50 new, the G1 is great, and used it's got to go for even
less. You can get it with or without expression pedal onbpard (mine is
without, but I think there is an input for one - I think that's
overkill, but maybe that's only because I never tried it).

Having said all that, I would still opt for trying to fix your amp. Even
if you invest in these puppies, having a totally working amp is a thing
of beauty, especially if whatever caused the reverb failure is a ticking
time-bomb waiting to screw up another circuit.

best,
Bobby

scales as they practise them.
If you experience stiffness, as Will did, you need to exercise in the opposite direction. That is to say, if you are squeezing, you need to do resistive opening of the hand. Also, warm ups and stretching before and AFTER (!) is very important, especially with those of use with old bodies.

I'll post this YouTube link again. Plus there are several good hand stretching videos there.

Re: hand exerciser

Here's a good YouTube video by a Doctor. The only gear you need is a pair of socks or towel and a rubber band.

The reviews of the Handmaster talk about the rubber bands breaking after a short while. It does seem like the company replaces them without questions, so they seem like honest people. I ordered one just for heck of it.

Re: hand exerciser

I feel your pain--literally. I have some (minor) problems with my fretting hand.

I'm joining this thread late, but I remember when I first joined the group several people advising "just play" to strengthen the hand.

Hand pain seems to me to be a different situation, and your experienced and accomplished player so your problems do not stem from bad technique (mine probably do). My wife (sax player, pianist and--day job--emailer) had carpal tunnel surgery that provided relief to her hand. While she was recuperating, her therapy consisted mostly of just opening and closing her hand.

Good luck.
