Finding your sound

Russell Moran

Hi folks

I've just joined the list - it looks like fun.
My name is Russell Moran and I've been playing and teaching guitar in
Australia for 40 years (worked in Chuck Berry's and Bo Diddley's Oz
touring bands in the 1970s and have done lots of other hippy/rock
ape/jazzy stuff).

Dave's question re developing your sound: many of my students ask me
this and this is what I say: Your sound lies in how you feel, groove,
express music, not in the electronics. Listening to the Pats, Wes,
Johns, Mikes etc is great, but sooner or later you have to turn off
the CD/tape player and find out how to do it your way. 'Cause your
already carrying your own unique voice, just trust it and develop it.
That's your sound. Listen to sax players, pianos etc, that may give
you an individual approach. Ultimately, just trying to play all the
other guitar player's licks with 'their' sound is an artistic dead
end. Just trust and value your own talent and groove.

Hope this helps
