removal of generator from LGT16D tractor

I'm not getting my battery charged on the tractor and it appears the generator is on the fritz. One large wire comes out of the generator comprising 2 smaller wires. How would I approach removing this large wire so I can remove the generator and get it evaluated? How is that large wire disconnected from the generator?
thanks to all,

Generators rarely give trouble. Maybe the voltage regulator is bad. It works harder than the generator ever would.

What does the voltage regulator look like on the LGT16D?? Where is it located?

thanks

Every time I think the regulator on my LGT145 has failed, it turns out one of the wires wiggled off. It's under the battery tray on my tractor.

thanks for the note.? I do believe the regulator on my diesel tractor is up near the steering wheel, under the dashboard. Do you have 6 terminals on your regulator and 6 wires leading into the regulator?? I suspect your regulator is different from mine. Some regulators only have 3 metal terminals and thus 3 wires.

Mike

thanks again.

Not sure if you have the manuals for this tractor. In the files section of this group there are many files for it. Link is below

Hope they help

Joe: thank you for sending the Ford information along. Greatly appreciate it.

I have one question. Not being expert in these tractors, I have one electrical problem at present. My charging light on the dashboard is lit when I am using the tractor. I put in a new voltage regulator and I am wondering if I reversed the terminals on the connection between the regulator and the continuation of the wires back to the battery. There is 6 wires coming out of the regulator and they connect to a 6 wire plug. I could have reversed the 2 plugs. Does this seem like it would result in the light staying on while running? Kinda sounds like it could.

thanks again, hope you can answer my question about the light staying on.

I've replaced my voltage regulator on my LGT16D and now the dashboard light is lit, signifying that the battery is not being charged. I? installed a knock-off regulator, not the OEM, and I'm wondering if the new one is just different in its wiring configuration.

If anybody has either the 14D or the 16D, can you tell me if you've replaced your regulator and have any of you experienced this problem I'm having.? I don't have the wiring diagram for this regulator and the wires/plugs, I believe I've wired it back together correctly.

Any thoughts on this?

thanks to all,

Mike

I suggest that you carefully sand the contacts on the old regulator and put it back. With cleaned contacts it may work properly.

Virtually all of the 6 contacts were very corroded on the old regulator. I might be able to use a fingernail file with the sandpaper surface to clean up the terminals. Thanks for the suggestion,

Mike

You might also try gluing a strip of 240 or 320 sandpaper to a strip of veneer.

Also, with the covers off both regulators check and see if they look like they have the same wiring configuration.?

I took the old regulator, the 6 terminals were corroded and dirty. Took a fingernail emery board and cleaned/polished them up until they shined. Put the old regulator back into the tractor, started it up and there was no dashboard light on. I'm guessing there's only 2 possible outcomes here, either the light was on and unit was not charging or light was off, signifying charging was in progress?

The 6 wires on the new regulator were not in the same sequence as the old regulator. I would guess colored wires would signify the same function on both regulators, but I could be wrong on this.

There's 2 wires coming out of the alternator, could I test these wires to see if I'm getting juice out of the alternator?

thanks again,

Mike

I'm not familiar with these modern units with alternators. I'm from the starter/generator days.?

With that said, I would try the following: Attach a voltmeter to the battery terminals. Not running, if the battery is good, it should read 12.6 volts. With the engine running. I think it should be around 14 volts or more if the alternator is charging the battery.

If I've said anything wrong, somebody please correct me??
