Simple construction idea
All: I've been working with a small (2.4") TFT touch screen display for a CW messaging system. The display has 14 pins on the right edge of the display, with their ID's silk screened on the back side of the display. During the course of building the circuit, I probably flipped the display front-to-back...oh, I don't know...about a bazillion times. Al (AC8GY) had a great , but simple, time-saving idea, as shown here: He cut some scrap from an Avery label sheet and just stuck it on the display. Well worth the effort for almost any device that has silk screening on the back but you need to work with it from the front. If need be, it's easy to peel the label off when you're done. Neither. Is a touch screen display and board that adds a bunch of features to the ?BITX. Here's a copy of ours: Its features include: 5” or 7” TFT Touch Screen 800x480 TFT Color Display Jack, W8TEEDual VFO RIT S Meter Real Time Clock (add optional battery) 50 CW Preset Messages, selectable at runtime Touch Screen Band Selection Touch Screen Buttons for function selection and control Dual Encoders: Frequency Tuning, ALS Tuning, Program Input Frequency Tuning: Standard and ALS Tuning ALS Tuning: Special tuning using the second encoder. If the frequency increment is set to 1KHz, ??? ALS Tuning sets the second encoder to one-tenth the increment of the primary tuning ??? rate. Re: Fw: [JackAl] W8TEE Mag Loop Testing
I should have provided more detail.? SML defined as "about 1m diameter".
Yes, I am looking for the "Inductor effective resistance" at resonance. Use a small value air capacitor in series which will have a very high (3000-4000) "Q" so it can be ignored, then short the capacitor and read the inductance and RL which is the "effective resistance at resonance". You want that number to be as low as possible for the highest "Q". There are also trade offs between all the possibilities.....important point. The sharper the "Q" the faster and better your Loop Auto Tuner needs to be. What effects that RL are: 1) solder joints (lead vs silver vs spot welding), 2) the shape of the conductor, 3) skin effect (flat coil bands are bad because the current density will be at the far outer edges of the flat strap [electrons at ? ? RF try to avoid each other], 4) the conductor material, 5) conductor diameter (many experiments including 8" corrugated plastic drain pipe with CU tape ;o), 6) coax coupling (Milt Cram ,W8NUE, did an excellent writeup on this for QEX recently......check it out, 7 etc.? Mechanically sandwiched plates on a capacitor shaft increase resistance, welded is much better. A DC ohm measurement is a "guide" but does not mean beans at RF. Butterfly capacitors reduce the number of resistive joints. Vacuum Variables are "best" but expensive. Due to the high "Q" and resultant tuning sensitivity, the whole assembly needs to be relatively sturdy to prevent movement in the wind. Ask George Heron, W2APB, about that. RL is more important at the lower frequencies .....far more important on 80m and 160m. Based on our (AQRP) testing, "One" SML for 160 through 10m is nuts......80m through 10m is difficult.......40m through 20m is very doable. Separate 160m through 80m, 40m through 20m, and 20m through 10m SMLs are bulky and cumbersome. Waiting for new ideas. 73 Kees K5BCQ |

Fw: [JackAl] W8TEE Mag Loop Testing

? Best capacitor type is a split Stator.? Hook up the stators in series to get ? the capacitance, but 2X the max voltage.? Some of the stator vanes may have to be removed or altered to get the range needed to cover both bands.? For one band only, a single stator/ rotor arrangement will work just fine.?
