Re: JackAl Assembly manual

Thanks, Mike. Al and I are so busy with another project, I haven't gotten around to a rewrite of the manual.

Excellent. I was just getting ready to post. After several months of not getting much bench time, I'm back in the saddle. I need the latest versions of the assembly manual. Thanks, Mike.

Mag Loop activation

All:

Al and I will be attending Field Day and will be at the Milford Amateur Radio Club (MARC, W8MRC) at Paxton-Ramsey Park just outside the 275 loop, close to Wards Corner exit. We will be using Al's "Luggable Double-Double" Magnetic Loop antenna, shown here (he doesn't like that name...):

Inline image

You'll notice this version has a vacuum variable capacitor (VVC) for tuning. Also note that Al 3-D printed the mounting brackets (in gray). He even has a thumbscrew clamp on the small driven loop! Tuning is done remotely using two encoders and a NEMA 17 stepper motor with controller. While not finished yet, it looks similar to this:

Inline image

You can see the controller hardware in the background. Test thus far shows it has 13dB gain over a reference dipole. Naw...just kidding. Any ML antenna is a compromise, but for many HOA dwellers, it may be the difference between making and not making contacts.

Anyway, if you'd like to see it, come to the Park this weekend. We'd love to see you there!

JackAL AGC-S Meter

Rick Price

My S meter was acting more like a VU meter and would always return or start at 0 even in high noise area bands and would only react to modulation.? I found that by changing a value in the SMeter.cpp file it now reads noise levels very close to my Yaesu FR101? receivers "S" meter.? This may not work for others but I have two JackAl boards and it works for both.? SMeter.cpp line 99 changed the first xLogValue100 from 277L to 200L the other board required a value of 205L.?

SMeter.cpp

99 ?? mappedValue = (int) map(xLogValue100, 277L, 289L, 85L, 190L);
new
99 ? ?mappedValue = (int) map(xLogValue100, 200L, 289L, 85L, 190L);

Re: USB 40M

Hi Rick:

First, nice implementation...looks good! Actually, I thought I had that sideband issue anticipated because of the popularity of the digital modes (FT8). I'll check into that and post the fix on the JackAl group. Honestly, it won't be soon as our Hamfest is this weekend and, as an officer of the club, I'm up to my a$$ in alligators right now. Indeed, Al and I will be taking our new mag loop and controller to Field Day, so I likely will not be able to look at it until after FD. Sorry for the delay, but I will get to it.

Is there a simple way to fix this so when selecting USB with the button it actually changes the mode? I have tried going to 20M USB and then manually dialing down to 40M but per the code the flip below 10MHZ happens.? Farhan's original code allows one to manually select USB if desired along with the auto flips.? I also see that you have been involved in several other projects but am wondering when the next code version will be provided to update some of the problem areas.

Re: Display Protection Boards

I did not say that mods are "needed", only answering a question that was asked. The "protection mod" is addressed on the JackAl groups' site. I'm sure it's possible to connect a power source incorrectly to a barrel power connector or wire the display incorrectly, but we think fairly unlikely. I believe there have been two cases where someone blew the display, so it can happen, but 99% will never need the mod. It's like life insurance: You hope you never need it, but the risk, no matter how remote, is still lurking in the background. The mod is there for those who want to implement it.

The board has not been changed, so you should add this on. We will need to work off our inventory before we can add the change.

Re: Display size and touch detection

I prefer the 5" as it is large enough to use, but keeps the case size down a bit which may be important for portable operation. Also, the smaller screen does draw a little less power and is less expensive.

We prefer the resistive touch screen, as it seems "more accurate" for people like me who have fat fingers. (I'm not fat, I'm just easy to see.) I'm not sure how the library code works with the capacitive touch displays.

Any thoughts on whether the 5" or 7" screen size is better?

I would prefer the smaller size I think as there ar more case options but any thoughts from those who have tried either or both?? Much appreciated!

Also I think the 7" display comes with either resistive or capacitive sensing as far as I can see.? Could the capacitive sensing option be used with the Jackal board (with an extra interface board perhaps) as it is generally better than resistive?
